Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times provides a list of the headliners for Monday’s Republican National Convention that will not be speaking because of Hurricane Gustav:

President George W. Bush
Vice President Richard B. Cheney
First Lady Laura Bush
Gov. Tim Pawlenty (Minn.)
Gov. Rick Perry (Texas)
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (Calif.)

The Convention will conduct “essential Party business” in an abbreviated session, including approval of the platform.

  1. Does this mean they won’t speak at all at the convention?

  2. [sarcasm] Wonderful. What a great way to nail home the point that the proper guardian of the public safety in LA in a hurricane is the federal government. [/sarcasm]

And this time, we ought to quickly fly back the entire US military from Iraq, overnight, to fill sandbags.

(And we wonder why we never seem to do a good job convincing the public that the Dems’ lies were actually lies.)

  3. DRJ, do you have a source for the claim that Gov. Schwarzenegger will not be speaking because of Hurricane Gustav?

California does not currently have a budget (the deadline is July 1), and the Governor has been trying to convince the members of the Legislature to not go to the conventions and stay and work on the budget itself. One of the sticks he is using is threatening to veto any bills passed until a budget is adopted.

However, under an anachronistic part of California law, if he leaves the state, the power of the Governorship passes to the Lt. Governor, who becomes “Acting Governor” until he returns. Thus, if he goes to the convention, the Lt. Governor (a Democrat) can sign the bills he is refusing to sign.

A similar issue kept Governor Wilson from the RNC in 1996.

  4. Aphrael,

You’re right but, in my defense, what I intended and what I think Lynn Sweet meant was that no one would be speaking because the entire first day has been canceled due to Hurricane Gustav. As I recall, Arnold had already backed out of his speech last week for the reason you point out.

However, now I’m not sure if all the day’s activities were indeed canceled. I was told there have been speeches today by Laura Bush and Cindy McCain on C-Span. I didn’t see them myself so I don’t know if they were live or broadcasts of earlier speeches. Anyone know about that?
