This is an open thread for comments on Day 1 of the Democratic National Convention. Click here for the full Monday schedule.
Day 1 has been broken down into segments. Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean opened the Convention and took care of business matters in the pre-7PM segment. It seems President Jimmy Carter was relegated to an honorary video without any/extensive live remarks.
However, in the coveted 7-9PM segment, I count 17 speakers or videos including:

The “Michelle Obama Package“? I assume this is a reference to her segment but did they really need to phrase it like that in the official schedule?
UPDATE: CBS posted a “sneak peek” of one paragraph of Michelle Obama’s speech. Unlike Michelle Malkin’s version, this one is apparently for real [emphasis supplied]:

Just reported: Camo fatigues, high power rifles, kevlar vests and more were found. I believe the report said two men were in custody. Apparently they claim there was a plot to assassinate Obama while he spoke thursday night with a rifle sighted to 750 yards…
I’ll be the first to say it…
Who ever is connected to this to further such a plot should die.

Scott Jacobs (d3a6ec) — 8/25/2008 @ 7:50 pmSounds a bit whacky to me, Scott. I’ve seen the local coverage here about the arrests and it does not really add up. Sure it is Colorado, but camo fatigues don’t really blend in to Invesco Field unless they are in orange and blue.
We’ll have to see what really turns up. Denver PD also arrested a guy downtown over the weekend who was carrying rifles for a safari to Africa.

Does either of them, Barack or Michelle, even consider you can’t have both??? That there isn’t enough money in the economy to do both???
If the economy is booming, and the government takes too much of it to give all the benefits, the economy will slow, stagnate….and there won’t be enough money…..

What they should have done is described at my name’s link, and doing that is going to be required before we can “deport the criminals first”. That’s also what non-Dem bloggers who are there should be doing instead of the low-hanging fruit of taking pictures of the extremist protesters.

Hillary has always been called divisive (reasons never truly cited and usually quite subjective). Barack will absolutely be remember as having been THE ONE to have divided the Democratic party in his arrogant selection of Biden. The overarching shame for this convention is that Barack supporters, sharing the same arrogance of their leader, are belittling Hillary supporters into getting with the program to get behind the Party. I have heard them make comments about us being whiners and so on and yet many of us have defected to other party lines. In other words, they have failed to realize that Hillary supporters do NOT care if Barack wins or loses, and would prefer that he does lose to keep the door open for 2012. Come November, Democrats will recognize that “divided we did fall” and it can only be blamed on the hubris, ego and greed of Barack Obama.

It was an amazing evening, with many moving speeches. Maybe the best was Jesse Jackson Jr.’s., though it’s a difficult selection. I think we are seeing a dramatic new campaign development — we see a full family effort here. It’s hard for me to believe that McCain can match this or come anywhere close.

If you look at the Obama plans vs the McCain plans, you will see as many reputable and non-partisan economists have seen, that McCain’s plans are way more expensive than Obama’s. That’s because McCain would continue the tax cuts for the wealthiest, which the Economist itself singled out as disastrous years ago, whereas Obama would not.
What I always want to ask Bush and the others who supported the tax cuts on the wealthy to begin with is this:
I thought these cuts were to make sure that prosperity continued? (That’s what Bush said at the time.) Instead, the rich are getting richer and the middle class and poor are getting poorer. That’s not continuing the prosperity as far as I’m concerned.

To a certain extent, the economy is like a game of Monopoly. If one side gets all the money, it’s time to declare a winner and start a new game with a more equal distribution of cash.
Of course, we can’t quite do that with a real economy, but one job of the government is to make the playing field fair and not let one side get all the cash.
The reason America was such a hopeful place historically was that there was a lot of land for everyone (if you didn’t count the Indians, which isn’t my responsibility) so everybody had a shot. The more the economy gets controlled by a few, the less real economic freedom there is. Redistribution is a crude way to fix things, and I am open to better suggestions. However, in the meantime, it’s a start.

I would put it a little differently. THe reason America was such a hopeful place in the beginning was that people if they were willing to put in the effort required (we won’t know how many people were offered land – aka opportunity – that didn’t take it because they weren’t willing to do the work required to build a house on it, work the land, etc. The current economic structure is different (most people don’t work their own land and build their own house) but the choices made to get property still hold.
Also, “redistribution” means “stealing from the wealthier to give to the poorer.” With the exception of help for those who can’t work and need money (i.e. welfare for the disabled, uncared for children, etc), which most people, liberal and conservative, agree we should provide, it is wrong to just take what some have earned and give it to others.
Am not rich by any American standard (though am by the world’s average standard) and I would object to someone taking a rich person’s money and giving it to me. I didn’t earn it, I’m not disabled, I chose a low paying but satisfying job, I made my choices. The thing you support is not just “crude,” it’s called “socialism.”

Add to that increased taxes on the very people who provide the jobs and income of so many americans (taxes which would be, I assure you, transfered on to consumers), and you have the lovely result of an economic downturn.
The government takes enough of my money as it is, and does a very poor job of spending it wisely. I would rather see spending cut (when was the last time this was even seriously considered?) first. If they can show me that they can control spending, then I will be willing to talk about maybe giving them more.
The issue at stake is that we are rapidly approaching the state where over 50% of the voting population has no stake in the money their reps vote for. By this I mean the fact that very, very soon 50% of Americans will pay no taxes or very little taxes, and what they spend will by FAR be outstripped by direct benifit from government programs.
Guess what happens when we cross that magic line. Hint: It ain’t good, borther…

All due respect, this is why people keep bringing up the term “zero-sum game” to you. Capitalism means that “the rest of us” will NEVER not have a chance to “get any of it.” I know that you don’t imagine “wealth” just means a static pile of dollar bills that some can hoard and others can never get, like in an actual Monopoly game.
Here’s a really simple and I’m sure very flawed example. Imagine a very poor person who has the ambition adn talent, and acquires the ability through hard work to design the best, coolest cars and yachts on the face of the planet. Some wealthy people are gonna give him/her money to make them, for a cut of the profits, and other wealthy people are gonna buy them. Soon Mr. or Ms. Enterpreneur is going to be – um, not poor anymore. Go figure. And it all happened without stealing from the ones who had a lot of money in the first place.

What has directly contributed to the increased numbers of those opting out is the simultaneously increase of the financial provision of the government to fill the gap.
Through a plethora of social programs and bailouts there is now a multi-generational population who take full advantage of this opportunity while opting out of the other opportunity that most of us choose (which involves the hard work of going through school and getting a job) because we desire to be financially indpendent and not dependent on the government.

Dems did OK for their first day, nothing special, and no big screw-ups. The Party big shots and old war horses put in the obligatory appearancs. So far, so good.
Michelle’s performance was certainly an improvement over her past gaff filled outings. She failed to mention her Ivy League education, Princeton and Harvard Law, but that would have introduced an eliteist element into the pollyanna profile she pushed. Ditto for the fancy jobs, not to mention the mansion, and $100,000 raise after Bambi got elected.
She did look great, much better than ever before. Her smile seemed warm at times, she’s obviously bright, and is capable of learning. She dissembles with facility.
Her speech was well written, well delivered, and well received. It attempted to re-invent her image and lay the foundation for her cult of personality, designed to replace Hillary as queen bee of the donkey clan.
Bambi, on TV from either St. Louis or Kansas City, seemed strangely ill at ease. He wasn’t comfortable and it showed. There was something not right about that whole song and dance, it struck me as contrived. What was he doing, where was he, why did they go to such lengths to conceal his location, and why wasn’t he in Denver?
Bambi is scared to death to give Hillary supporters an opportunity to denonstrate enthusiasm on the convention floor. The backroom fighting, and resultant “hotel roll-call” vote is an example of how fear paralyzes the mind. The best is yet to come.
I give it a C+ overall.

Michelle Obama as First Lady would greatly help bring back our standing in the world and resurrect our American spirit of hope, and, a “yes, we can do this”-attitude. Get things done without destroying the state, without sacrificing American lives in wars based on lies and concoctions, without torturing people in the name of “national security” and without shredding the constitution.
She is a genuinely warm and loving human being, a mother, daughter, sister and wife, radiating enthusiasm and positive energy, all the same time sharp, curious and insightful, and undoubtedly deserving where her talents propelled her.
THIS ought to be the big news being reported from the convention.
I cannot imagine anybody with a spark of life and hope inside their hearts whose heart is not touched by this Great American.
Michelle Obama – we want to see more of you in the coming weeks so that people will see with their own eyes what is their choice, which family ought to move into the White House to get us out of the current nightmare and multi-faceted disaster.

I watched about 2 hours of the Convention Monday night and I watched it on MSNBC. I don’t think I watched Fox News at all on Monday. However, I like to listen to Fox Business in the mornings – it’s on in the background when I get dressed.

In a perfect world, you are correct Daley. But unfortunately all the networks are going to show you there side of the convention. Even if you make a point of muting the commentators, the cut away shots of the audience could be very telling.
I watched a Fox the audience seemed bored, where as CNN showed a tearer eyed audience. Both are probably misleading exaggerations.
I’m guessing the same will happen with The RNC.

Does anyone really have any idea what John’s point was? Did he just go off his meds and stumble into this site? I don’t think I have seen so much disjointed ranting since….the Dems trying to explain The Messiah’s positions and platform in a way that doesn’t ensure a complete thrashing in the voting booth.
Just painful to see.
