Jeremiah Wright’s 15 30 Minutes of Fame (Updated)

[Guest post by DRJ]

I know from blogging that it’s hard to stop talking once you start. According to the Chicago Sun Times, Jeremiah Wright has the same problem:

“The controversial Rev. Jeremiah Wright — Sen. Barack Obama’s pastor — is speaking Monday at the National Press Club as part of a divinity conference of black church leaders. Wright’s decision to headline an event at the Press Club — open to all media — risks giving Obama’s critics more fodder, as if they don’t have enough already.

Meanwhile, PBS is touting an interview with Wright to be broadcast Friday on “Bill Moyers’ Journal.” Fresh material from Wright — no matter how well-intended — is not what Obama needs.

Wright’s Press Club talk is supposed to be about offering perspective on black churches — theology, history and politics, and the torrent of coverage stemming from Obama’s presidential bid.”

UPDATE: I don’t have time to read it now but ABC has excerpts from Jeremiah Wright’s PBS interview with Bill Moyers.

  1. preach on pastor, preach on! don’t let anyone try to stop you…… (you know who i mean. %-)

  2. I’m not so sure that this isn’t deliberate. The Clintons had a strategy where they would react to negative information about themselves by pushing the story as much as possible until everyone was sick of hearing about it. A couple of months later, anyone who brought it up was just a crank who couldn’t let the past go.

If Obama has the election sewn up (as he arguably does), then his best strategy is to get people sick of this story now while it only involves Democrat voters. Then in the general election when it would hurt him the most, no one will want to hear about it.

  3. Doc

I was thinking something similar the other day. Why not have Hillary stay in the race and defuse all the bombs in the primary.

Sen. Obama gets battle-tested for free, he has nothing to lose and he effectively neutralizes all the bad stuff that is likely to come out eventually anyway.

By the time the Republicans have a chance to run with it…it’s already stale. Heck, if they can keep the primary going until August…maybe have a voting issue on Florida and Michigan to “delay” the selection process…everybody comes together in September for a lovefest, kiss, makeup and they have in essence…kept the Republicans on the sideline for all but a few weeks before November rolls around.

Sen. Obama never gets fully vetted, he holds a few limited debates with Sen. McCain…avoids any tricky questions by saying they are distractions and “typical” Republican “dirty tricks”…and Voila! A guy with virtually no background check…unvetted and untested…avoids having to faceoff in a real contest for very long.

  4. The problem is that if the Wright story catches enough, Obama won’t be the nominee. So I don’t believe this particular conspiracy theory, Doc.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  5. cfbleachers – That might work, if Hillary and Obama were in on it. Something tells me, however, that the Clintons aren’t just playing along.

    Apogee (366e8b)

  6. My thought about the continued Wright exposure is that he begins to water down his remarks in an attempt to paint his earlier comments as anomalies.

    Apogee (366e8b)

  7. Please, do any of us think that Moyers is gonna let Wright, friend of Obama, look bad? The questions are bound to be something like this:

“Reverend Wright, why are Senator Obama’s political opponents so willing to take your remarks out of context?”

“Pastor Wright, do you think the reaction to your remarks is indicative of the struggles that African-Americans — Senator Obama included — have in addressing sensitive issues without the white media distorting what you are saying?”

“Reverend Wright, you are an educated man who has spent decades trying to help the neglected underclass of Chicago. Would you say that the Obamas are every bit as morally attuned to poverty, or even more so, than you are?”

“Reverend Wright, don’t you think that the men and women who served in the Johnson Administration where ahead of their time in terms of their commitment to Civil Rights and equality, and in retrospect don’t you think they should be considered to have moral authority over people less liberal than they?”

  8. What questions would you idiots ask the man?

    Levi (76ef55)

  9. #8~ Let’s start with asking him to explain “Black Liberation Theology,” and see how fast it goes downhill from there, o brainless one.

    EW1(SG) (84e813)

  10. I just saw a few clips of the interview on MSNBC, and I think he should give more of them. He’s not anything like the person you’re all shitting your pants about.

    Fucking racists.

    Levi (76ef55)

  11. Levi, your foul mouth and cheap namecalling really indicate that you have a lot of growing up to do.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  12. A man of God should avoid this kind of bad image. Its not good for the ministry. a Pastor’s job is to pray for his flock, speak to them about how to be great citizens, and show by practical examples how to live the christian life. He must never curse nor get involved in contorversies. He is never to take sides on political issues. He must remember he is the father of all, not some minority clan. He must bless and not curse. However he must not fail to rise up and condemn injustice and evil. He is to forcefully renounce it. He must never be associated with violence nor be given to any thing in excess. He must learn to rule his emotions well and never be unduely controlled by anger or the like.

  13. #10:

    Fucking racists.

Weren’t you recently complaining that others here (including me) had no basis to make judgements about you, because we didn’t “know you?”

Again, you demonstrate a complete disconnect from reality and a pathetic stereotype in place of comprehending principled conservatism.

Besides which, the brothers in my house might take some offense at you attempting to insult me like that.

    EW1(SG) (84e813)

  14. Levi

    You are getting really tiresome

You so much remind me of the little puppy I once had. He would get all excited and want to get my attention, so he’d run around the living room floor and then stop in the middle and piddle.

    Run around little puppy

    Buckshot (d4346c)

  15. I agree with Levi. Wright should get out there and preach to America, as often as possible. I’d love to hear more of this.

Hey EW1(SG), How does it feel to be “insulted”? Guess we reap what we sow right?! And what do you mean by “the brothers in my house.”? Is that supposed to be another of your stereotypes?

    love2008 (d2a57f)

  17. SPRQ, the conspiracy theory wasn’t mine, it was cfbleachers. My theory was about media handling on the part of Obama’s campaign. I agree with Apogee about the conspiracy theory: there is no way the Clintons are going to help someone else take the crown that they think belongs to them again.

But the fact that it is still possible for Obama to lose the primaries doesn’t really tell against my theory. They have to be thinking probabilities. Will Wright hurt them more in the primaries or in the general? Clearly it will hurt them more in the general. Are they better able to take a hit in the primaries or in the general? Clearly Obama is way ahead in the primaries so they would rather take a hit in the primaries.

    Doc Rampage (01f543)

  18. SPQR

It wasn’t a “theory”…it was more of a “what if” this played out…this is how it might benefit Sen. Obama

    cfbleachers (4040c7)

  19. Weren’t you recently complaining that others here (including me) had no basis to make judgements about you, because we didn’t “know you?”

I believe you started hollering about how I didn’t know anything about the military or guns, because I didn’t tell you what your nic meant or some shit. Which is a pathetic way to argue. That’s all.

Again, you demonstrate a complete disconnect from reality and a pathetic stereotype in place of comprehending principled conservatism.

‘Principled conservatism,’ is that the brand that George Bush is peddling? I’m pretty sure I get that one; make your buddies rich by fucking over the country. What kind of conservatives are you talking about?

Besides which, the brothers in my house might take some offense at you attempting to insult me like that.

Do I give a fuck? What are you gonna do, hunt me down and use your army moves on me?

    Levi (76ef55)

  20. I’m trying to figure out which one has a lower opinion of America, Bill Moyers or Jeremiah Wright.

I also think it’s great that Wright is standing by his statements, but can’t figure out why he thinks he’s being mischaracterized by having actual tapes of them broadcast. Swiftboating was defined in 2004 as the inconvenient disclosure of unpleasant truth and maybe he upset about that.

    daleyrocks (906622)

  21. Jeremiah Wright how long before they make a movie about him?

    krazy kagu (37862d)

  22. Why is everyone missing Wrights point? American has felled its people. We are no longer a government for the people. Big business stole the election and put a “fool” in office. We have done more harm than good in Iraq! We can’t afford to have another solider die. We are under a curse. White ministers have said the same thing and we over look it. Wright is not Obama! Let’s talk about the truths in his sermon. We can point out the bad things about the USA and not be unpatriatic. We do have the right of free speech. Wright is more American than the immigrants who run this country and claim to be American. He is willing to tell the truth and not give us “disinformation” like the “Reagon republicans”.

    Hey EW1(SG),

    Hey dipsqueak!

How does it feel to be “insulted”?

Dunno, neither you nor the poster who attempted it are capable of it.

Guess we reap what we sow right?!

Got me at a disadvantage there, because you sure as heck don’t sound like a farmer, but I could be wrong.

And what do you mean by “the brothers in my house.”?

    In this house.

Is that supposed to be another of your stereotypes?

Not mine, but your’s are on display for all to see.

  24. Is Senator Barack Obama:
The human Incarnation Of the Beloved And Deceased
    American Civil Rights Champion –
    Dr Martin Luther King Jr.?

As Americans discuss and debate how the results of the expected Pennsylvania win by Senator Clinton will impact the course of the surprisingly closely contested and increasingly heated race, to decide who will become the Democratic Party’s candidate to campaign against Senator John McCain in the race to serve as the next President of the United States of America, Higher Level Productions would like to bring your attention to a revealing, compelling, shocking, and illuminating tribute that has been written by a spiritual master to the Senator from the state of Illinois.

There is a beautiful, compelling, and illuminating tribute to Senator Obama that has been written by a highly developed spiritual master named Avatar Galextra that Higher Level Productions invite Americans especially, and the rest of the people living on the surface of the blue planet, to take the time to examine closely and consider carefully for themselves. It is a 34 page PDF tribute that is written in a beautiful, simple, and poetic style (which makes it only about 12 typed pages in real length) that the Avatar calls: “A Tribute To Senator Barack Obama – “One Of The Brightest And One Of The Most Compelling Visionaries In American Political History.”

Avatar Galextra is here on the blue planet, as she states in her “Message To The Human Race” on her website avatargalextra.com:

“to serve and protect the greater good of all life forms living here through the life changing and planet healing work that I am doing to bring all beings together and bring a new way of being to all races of mortal beings living as temporary tenants of Mother Earth – so that the human race can finally learn to live in a state of lasting peace, true harmony, perfect balance, deep reverence, and permanent abundance with themselves, with each other, and with all other races of beings sharing this blue planet with humankind.”

The Avatar identifies the junior senator from the State of Illinois as:

“a very spiritually evolved Cosmic being who is appointed by history, and anointed by destiny, to serve as the 44th President of the United States Of America; and lead his beloved, and deeply divided, nation through the most turbulent economic, social, and political storms that Americans have experienced since the Great Depression of the 1930’s – and onto the frontiers of a new way of living and a harmless way of living that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called “The Promise Land.”

Not since the days of President John F. Kennedy has an American political figure manage to capture the imagination, and express the hopes and dreams, of his fellow Americans – as the “skinny kid with the funny name” has done since he burst on the national political scene with his electrifying and inspirational speech as the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention in late July of 2004.

Today Senator Barack Oboma is just two steps away from becoming the first African American, (of racially mixed origin) to hold the office of the President Of The United States Of America as he campaigns against a formidable, resilient, and determined opponent for the right to serve as the Democratic choice to run for the oval office in the upcoming 2008 American Presidential election.

According to Avatar Galextra, the “fairy tale candidate” with the “funny name” is showing that:

“ he is a true visionary who has the conviction of purpose, eloquence of words, depth of insight, clarity of vision, strength of character, and soundness of integrity that can unify that divided and deeply troubled nation; and inspire his fellow Americans to aspire to unite and come together to work honestly, diligently, respectfully, carefully, and truthfully for the greater good of all Americans, of their beloved republic, and for the general welfare and wellbeing of all the nations of people living on the surface of the blue planet today.”

In her compelling and illuminating tribute to Barack Obama the Avatar reveals an intriguing supernatural connection between Senator Obama and Dr Martin Luther King Jr. that is stunning, enlightening, and inspirational for his fellow Americans especially, and for the people of Western Civilization in general. As Avatar Galextra discloses:

“The soul who lived and died as Dr Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1968 is the same soul who now lives as Barack Oboma. Martin has returned to this planet as someone that author Ruth Montgomery in two of her best sellers Strangers Among Us and Aliens Among Us – identifies as a “Walk-In” – in order to continue the work he was doing as the Civil Rights champion to show and help his fellow Americans find, and travel, on the road to the “Promise land.”

Higher Level Productions hope that this tribute to Senator Obama by an Avatar will provide his fellow Americans, as she puts it: with a body of deep truths, and true insights, that they can each use as they follow ‘the historic journey of the fairytale candidate’ in his ambitious quest to fulfill his appointed destiny – to become the 44th American President; and unite their deeply divided, and severely afflicted America, with his beautiful and compelling vision of the kind of unified, united, respected, and prosperous nation that he is inspiring his fellow Americans to truly aspire to become as a people, and as a nation.”

*The entire tribute to Senator Obama can be viewed at aplanetundersiege.com. It will also be available as an HTML document in the next few days.

Went to the site you posted. Very impressive. Keep up the good work. And about reaping what you sow, when you are in the habit of treating people nice, helping people and generally being good, it comes to you in multiplied measures. People will also be good to you. You dont have to be a farmer to know that. Just read the bible, Gal6:7. Do unto others as you would have them do to you. Its the golden rule. Matt7:12 You are doing such a good work with your organisation, dont spoil it with bad manners.

    love2008 (d2a57f)

  26. #26: Stop being an ass and a boor. I’m not an Oxford House member because I’m doing “good work.”

And the passages you mention aren’t in my Bible. As R. Hillel is credited with saying, “Do not do to others what you would not wish them to do to you.” (sometime before Yeshua).

Again, your stereotypical view of the world has led you into a breach of good manners for which you blame another. Typically liberal.

    EW1(SG) (84e813)

  27. Sky-gods, sub-deities, cherubs: What a sad, sad state-of-affairs that this country bases its choice of leaders on what mythological all-seeing, skygod deity you worship. Let’s bring back witch trials and the crusades as well! They always worked. In the meantime, I need to go hunker down because the sun’s going to go away in a few hours and I don’t know if it will come up again. So, I need to go pray to my god, suncomeback…..Sheeze. What a great diversion to everything that we need to do is the country. Let’s argue about what’s being blathered on about while praying and talking to ourselves.

    Tuckerdog (93bbec)

  28. Tuckerdog – I don’t choose based on religion, I choose based on who tells me the most lies like any good progressive. Right now Hillary and Barack are telling the most lies, so I choose McCain. It’s simple if you pay attention.
