Jeremiah Wright Will Speak in Houston Church

[Guest post by DRJ]

The Houston Chronicle reports that Chicago Rev. Jeremiah Wright will give three sermons at a Houston church next week:

“Just weeks after publicity over his controversial sermons rocked Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright will preach three guest sermons at Houston’s Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church.

Wright, who until February was minister of Obama’s church, Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, will preach Sunday, March 30.

Wheeler pastor, the Rev. Marcus Cosby, could not be reached for comment Friday. A spokesman for the church said Wright, who has offered sermons at Wheeler annually for the past 15 years, had been scheduled as part of the church’s regular speaker’s program.

Cosby is among African-American clergymen who are advising Obama on religious matters.”

That should be standing room only.

  1. According to the Politico, Wright also gave a “fiery guest sermon” on Feb. 20 in Little Rock after which “the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette ran an article that said: ‘On Tuesday, Wright criticized the U.S. invasion of Iraq and likened the insurgents to the Israelites under Babylonian rule.'”

  2. Look for YouTube video an hour (if that) after the sermon is over. I expect Reverend Wright will be pretty subdued.

  5. I live in Katy, about 20 miles from downtown Houston…and as a member of the oppressor class (White Male)I’m tempted to go. I don’t know what I’d get out of it, but I’m tempted to go.

  8. America must look racism in the face and not blink. This year we have the opportunity to make this election a civil / equal rights victory for all Americans. The Rev Wight issue and Obama’s brilliant speech have started a much-needed national discussion on race relations in this country. With President Obama in the White House we can come together for a common cause and address many of the problems including race relations that currently face this great nation.

One definition of racism is that it usually denotes race-base violence, prejudice, discrimination, or oppression. Black people are not only victims of injustice in criminal court cases but also victims of an unjust civil court system.

My life should have been an American success story. I am a 54-year-old divorced black female and the mother of four children. I was born black and poor in rural north Florida to an unwed mother. We were too poor to even have an outhouse – we had to share my grand mother’s out door toilet. As a child I worked in tobacco fields and one year worked as a migrant worker. As a migrant worker I picked peaches, apples, and harvested tomatoes and cabbages.

“As an underdog born into poverty I managed to achieve my dream of graduating from college and having what should have been a great career with New York State Department of Corrections. My dream and my life were shattered by employment discrimination.” A Case of Racial Discrimination and Retaliation Real or Imagined.”

Eliot Spitzer is the former governor of New York State. He was forced to resign after he was linked to a high price call girl operation. Eliot Spitzer was the Attorney General of New York State when a member of his staff, Mike Russo, Assistant New York State Attorney General, filed seven perjured declarations in federal court. The perjured declarations were filed to prevent a jury from ruling that the Defendants violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as amended. By filing the perjured declarations NYS Attorney General’s Office also victimized me.

Two of my daughters also experienced painful racism. My girls complained of racial incidents on a regular basis while attending University of Virginia and Penn State University. Both daughters were admitted to their respective universities based on outstanding academic records and great SAT scores.

My daughter Julieannah attended Penn State on a full academic scholarship. She graduated with Honors in 2002 with a double major and a minor in Spanish. In response to the handling on a hate mail incident(s) she wrote a letter to the college newspaper.

Racism quickly becoming important concern at PSU

I am deeply concerned about the article that appeared in the Collegian yesterday. The article, regarding the most recent incidence of hate mail, quoted Penn State Police Services supervisor Stewart Neff as saying,” Little things are brought to our attention that perhaps at other times might not have been reported.”

Mr. Neff, if you did in fact say that statement then pay close attention as I attempt to educate you and the Penn State community. By minimizing a problem that is so prevalent on this campus as well as an issue that is apparent in this nation and globally, you are providing an excuse to further ignore a serious problem. Racial incidents, gay bashing and anti-Semitic deeds happen every day.

The effects that these hateful actions have on individuals are not negated based on your perception of what constitutes a “big thing.” Either it be a student who was told that she can not enter a party at a fraternity house because no blacks are allowed, or a Latino student who was asked by a professor “Why do you people keep having so many kids?” a hateful and non-tolerant environment affects people’s self-esteem, their ability to focus on their studies and ultimately their safety.

I am encouraging and challenging every person on this campus to realize that racism is a colossal problem at Penn State, to start with yourself and evaluate how you truthfully perceive “differences”, and to speak out on hate crimes. For all of the people who have experienced racism, you are not alone. Participation in dialogue about racism and continuously reporting incidents will help.

  11. The best thing about Dr. Wright’s (4 earned degrees, 1 bachelors, 2 masters and 1 doctorate, how many do you have?) instant fame is that it’s caused the white folk who have been masqerading as our liberal neigbors, co-workers and friends pretending to be so over the race issue, to once again show their true “colors”. After working for 20 years in the race relations industry, sadly most of you are completely incapable of having any intelligent non-emotional conversation aabout race geared toward healing. Get over yourselves. Believe me, when you finish your what we can always a depend on “reactionary” dyfunctional repsonse to the mere mention of race, we will go right back to the business of healing every Sunday in church via our pastors which we’ve been doing since the days of slavery, all over the world, from having to live and work next to such imposters. Dr. Wright and his colleagues will continue to pray for you.

  12. So even after what he has said they still invite him. Well frankly noone should bother comming just go to another church

  13. Denise,

I’ve lived next door to, worked and worshipped with people of different races for years. I had no idea I was a reactionary, dysfunctional imposter.

    DRJ (a431ca)

  14. Denise – Are the imposters in your house and Rev. Wright’s pews or next door to you? I can’t tell without a scorecard.

  15. It is very sad that this man is allowed to preach such devisive and hate-breeding words in any building, much less a church building. He was a preacher at Trinity “United” Church of Christ. My question is what is uniting about his words and as a member of the church of Christ I’m ashamed that he claims to be a member of the same 1st century church. And no I haven’t read any liberation gospel books, I prefer to read the bible, the true liberating gospel.

  16. DRJ–of course we are. My grandfather didn’t actually come here from Czarist Russia to escape the Cossacks and the pogroms. He was born here, and his grandfather came from Russia with enough money to buy a plantation and make major amounts of money in cotton planted and harvested by slave labor. Your great great grandfather and Patterico’s owned the plantations down the road, and Daleyrock’s ancestor was one of the overseers.

And may the bunny be with you.

    kishnevi (3cf898)

  17. Heh. But don’t be so sexist, Kishnevi. My family’s plantation was owned by my great great grandmother.

Damn, these trolls are tiresome. Levi, denise, Vera, Phil – All 110 percent sure that anyone that differs from them is a racist.

  19. Any home or baby news, JD?

    DRJ (a431ca)

  20. Yes, DRJ. We have drywall up, and the 24″ travertine was finished being laid today. Tomorrow the new washer and dryer are being delivered. The trim carpenter starts tomorrow and is going to install all of the custom built-ins this week. Painters come on Thursday, and are supposed to be done on Friday. On Saturday, the carpeting is coming for the theatre and the stairs, and then my significantly better half is free to have our lovely daughter any time after that. She started getting cramps after dinner, which is what happened shortly before her water broke last time around, so it could be anytime now. She is sleeping while she can.

    JD (6f5e4a)

  21. The house sounds great: 24″ travertine and a theatre – Wow. And the birth sounds imminent. At least you’ll have a W/D and (hopefully) beds. I know you’ll need the former and maybe you will get to use the latter more than you expect.

    DRJ (a431ca)

  22. DRJ – It is our “dream home”, and we have years of work, and sweat equity in this little place.

This is washer and dryer numero dos. For some reason, it was important to have a laundry room upstairs, and on the main floor. Why? No idea whatsoever.

    JD (6f5e4a)

  23. Why?

    I suspect “Honey… I think a W/D upstairs would be great” played a part somewhere… 🙂

    Scott Jacobs (d3a6ec)

  24. My philosophy is that a person can never have too many W/Ds, refrigerators, dishwashers, or HD TVs.

    DRJ (a431ca)

  25. Scott Jacobs – You are exactly correct. Which entailed knocking out a wall, running plumbing and electrical, framing an addition to an existing walk-in closet, etc … I think it all stems from an inability to say no to the women in my life.

DRJ – 2 w/d, 3 fridges, 2 dishwashers, and not enough HDTV’s (one can never have enough).

    JD (6f5e4a)

  26. or HD TVs

I continue to be depressed that such a fine woman is already married…

    /swoon

    Scott Jacobs (d3a6ec)

  27. There are many young ladies who would be thrilled to have a nice guy like you, Scott. Just remember the golden rule: Buy one nice (piece of jewelry, household appliance, or whatever she likes) for every HDTV you buy.

    DRJ (a431ca)

  28. Scott – Please note that most, if not all of the “golden rule” bits of advise will almost inevitably cause serious damage to your wallet.

    JD (6f5e4a)

  29. And when you are with the right person, that will be money well spent.

*Better Half just walked into the room. 😉
