Huck Won’t Give Up

The headline on Yahoo’s home page reads:

Huckabee says his beliefs — not his ego — keep him in the race

I take that to mean that Huckabee’s ego — not his beliefs — keep him in the race.

Allahpundit summed him up very nicely today: “blissfully indifferent to his chances, and superficially genial with streaks of nastiness underneath.” Juuuust under the surface, too. The man makes my skin crawl.

Huck, not Allah.

P.S. Has anyone else noticed that Allah is really on a roll lately? The man’s always good, but this election season, the combination of useful insights and hilarious understated style is making Hot Air the number one stop for any conservative who wants to know what’s going on. Case in point: today’s post on Hillary’s screw-up on the Pennsylvania delegates. Takeaway line:

Now here’s another glimpse at just how sharp those finely honed First Spouse management skills she developed really are.

Heh.

  1. Why are you hating on the Huckster?

    He’s a good guy…

    Good for nothing, that is.

  2. That guy always reminded me of an old style southern God-fearing Democrat. The thing is we all know those guys were full of it! So is pHuckabee.

  3. I’ve got no problem with him continuing–it keeps the Republican primaries in the news, gives McCain a good reason for refusing to consider him for the second slot (shudder) on the ticket, and gives us the joy of watching the little William Jennings Bryan wannabe’s hopes and dreams being steamrollered into paste. What’s not to love about it?

  4. I don’t normally like to reveal my profession online because it gives people all kinds of ideas – not always conducive to good communication. But, as the pastor of a large congregation, I find myself more creeped out by Huckabee than most people.

I have SO seen the type before. He’s in love with the microphone. He riffs on his basic themes of reconciliation (always a winner) and mercy and tough-love. He prescribes the same dose to every ill. Bad people in Iran? – Just be nice to them and they’ll be nice to us. A divided American electorate? – Just reach out in love and it will all work out.

If you’re in an expanding suburb you can often get a church to grow with empty talk like that. Many people don’t want to hear anything much more challenging from their pastor. But then, they don’t come to the pastor for REAL solutions, like the dilemma of their health care, the impending demise of their Social Security, or how to end a war.

Huckabee is a nice man who has wandered way out of his league. Like a teenager with a fast car, he has no idea how much trouble he can cause. Yet.

  5. A bit off-topic, but Allahpundit linked to a site that linked this Larry Johnson essay from 2/16/08. At HuffPo, Johnson dyspeptically outlines three openings that the Rethuglican attack machine will use to go after nominee Obama:

    The Tony Rezko Problem:

There is a growing body of material in the blogosphere on this issue… but the mainstream media has paid little attention and most Americans know nothing of Rezko’s bribery and corruption trial. Not yet. But that will change starting February 25, when Rezko goes on trial in Chicago…

    The William Ayers Problem:

William Ayers is an unrepentant terrorist, though he is normally described as a distinguished education professor. One does not necessarily rule out the other, but he himself acknowledges planting bombs in U.S. Federal buildings. There is now undeniable proof of a longstanding relationship between Barack Obama and William Ayers…

    The Problem of Rashid Khalidi:

So far, the press has paid little attention to Obama’s ties to Rashid Khalidi, [Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies and head of the Middle East Institute] at Columbia University and PLO activist…

    Worth a look.

  6. Off topic followup on the above off topic.

The ultra-lefties at Counterpunch seem a mite skeptical about Obama:
    http://www.counterpunch.org/
    Obama’s Money Cartel

Pam Martens exposes the slimy underside of the campaign for “hope” and “change”. Obama says lobbyists “haven’t funded my campaign”. A lie, Martens writes in this explosive issue of CounterPunch. Five top contributors to Obama are registered lobbyists and he fronts for the most vicious players on Wall Street. Read how he helped pass the law for which Big Business had been scheming for a decade.

  7. Addendum to the above: with a few noble exceptions, elected politicians of both parties in IL are part of a single non-ideological qusi-criminal/crimimal enterprise. The current Dem governor will probably wind up in prison just like his GOP predecessor.

The “ideology” of the Combine(as Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass calls is it) is both pro-corporate(that’s where the money is-duh) and cultural marxist/multicultist because the latter is the default position in today’s decadent West. The pro-corporatism is limited, of course, by the need for high taxes to pay off the public employee unions and others who make up the voting base.

  8. Johnson (does anyone really listen to him anymore)must be a Clintonite if he rubbishing Obamma. Otherwise he would be able to provide equally damaging information about Hillary.

  9. I should say about Huckster that he always got a free ride from the media. I felt that I needed to have a shower every time he opened his mouth. The lizardly way he would insult someone shows a real lack of character.

    davod (5bdbd3)

  10. Johnson must be a Clintonite if he rubbishing Obama.

    So I would assume.

As far as “(does anyone really listen to him anymore)” I’m not familiar with the guy. If he’s a regular at Huffington, I suppose the answer is “yes,” though. Irrespective of Johnson’s bona fides or lack thereof, there are the points he’s making. If Obama would prefer that nobody pay attention to his choice of associates, will everybody with access to a keyboard agree to play along? If they don’t, will it turn out that the electorate doesn’t care anyway?

Maybe it’ll all work out for Obama, or at least end up being a tie with McCain–I’m sure enough will come out about McCain’s shortcomings during the campaign. I’d prefer to know before I cast my vote. If I were a Dem, I’d want to know before primary season ends.

  11. Huckabee came out of nowhere on the radar screen to gain some traction with voters in the primaries and he desperately doesn’r wanr ro give that notoriety up. Non acolytes just wish he would fade back into obscurity.

The post isn’t about Obama or Larry Johnson’s smears about peoples’ pasts before Obama met them such as William Ayers. Johnson was a tireless shill for Valerie Secret Agent Plame and Broadway Joe Wilson. There’s not much money in that these days, so it appears he’s angling for a spot with Hillary by shilling for her. After writing there was nothing to fear from terrorism in rhe NY Times in the NY Time during the summer of 2001, Scary Larry’s judgement has always been suspect, except to the fringe left.

  12. Daleyrocks (#11), thanks for the context on Johnson. Pat, apologies for the thread-jacking.
