Fred Talks to Bloggers

Fred Thompson had a conference call with bloggers today. I was invited to participate, but I couldn’t, as it took place during my work day. For coverage of the call, see this Power Line post. [UPDATE: And this Hot Air post.] I don’t see anything shocking there; he’s staking his candidacy on a win in South Carolina, but we knew that.

Consider this an open thread on the election and tonight’s debate, which I’m watching right now. I turned it on in the middle, but it looks like Fred is consciously trying to show he has more energy. I’m not sure it’s enough, but I’d like to be wrong . . .

UPDATE: Frank Luntz’s focus group thinks Fred won. He was wrong in New Hampshire. Let’s see if he’s right in South Carolina.

  1. Fred Thompson was very strong in the first quarter, and quite strong thus far in the second.

He won round one because he was the only one who was memorable, and contrasted with his previous performances, it was very strong. He was both strong in asking for time to address his point and polite in doing so. That added to the effectiveness with me.

Huckabee’s being a grade-A Lyndon Johnsonesque moron on the Iranian naval incident:

“I’m going to trust that the president and the naval commanders made the right decision…”

What a fucking asshat! The president wouldn’t have gotten involved within that timeframe. And this moron doesn’t have a clue!

In the second, Fred scores again with the virgins!

Way to go, Fred — and he’s not even my guy.

  2. Fred’s continuing strong in the second… I like his line about the polls… how can anyone ever go against a poll? Now he’s being substantively strong on Pakistan, a situation he and McCain understand well, Fred probably best. Way to go, Fred!

  3. Huckabee’s going after Paul on Israel: Way to go, Huck!

  4. I’d have to give the second quarter to Fred on points.

  5. Thompson won the Frank Luntz Fox News focus group… finally.

  6. hey where’s David? did you hear? McCain thinks Saddam killed Thomas Jefferson!

  7. Careful Chas, we might find out that DE is related to TJ through Sally Hemmings.

  8. “Let’s see if he’s right in South Carolina.”

The problem with that may be as Allahpundit pointed out: McCain’s now ahead in South Carolina, not Huckabee. So by laying into Huckabee so much, Fred helps McCain… playing into the theory I half believe that Fred is McCain’s stalking horse, and is getting more serious and motivated now that his buddy McCain is within striking distance.

  9. More on the Thompson as stalking horse theory.

Sorry Pat and other Fred heads… I think your guy is trying to help my guy.

  10. i just dont think so chris, they werent that good of friends back when fred! was in the senate. but if that does seem to be the scenario at some point and fred! drops out i’ll be demanding a refund!

he may be laying off mccain figuring the conservatives in SC will start to remember just what mccain has done and realize he is no friend of the GOP while he does need to attack huck since SC voters may not be as aware of the true huch as they are of the true mccain.

  11. fred has no chance. voters can’t distinguish candidate fred from the sourpuss on law and order. if the republicans wanted to run an actor this time, they should have run clint eastwood. a moderate republican, mayoral experience, well-liked and a much greater filmography than fred, he would have attracted a lot of votes.

  12. Clearly Ron Paul won the debate… based on Fox News text voting.

    Exit question: How’d that happen?

    Christoph (92b8f7)

  13. did you hear? McCain thinks Saddam killed Thomas Jefferson!

And Jefferson isn’t even dead! Oh, wait a minute.

I caught that too, and couldn’t help thinking the same thing.

  14. Paulbots, Christoph. Paulbots.

    And Ronulans.

  15. “Why the Morons Who Run Red State Are a Bunch of Jackasses and I Won’t Bother to Comment There Nor Even Read There Again”

Short and sweet. Less than a week after signing up to comment, I was banned. Why? The only conceivable reason is their policy against not letting anyone new to comment who supports Ron Paul.

But here’s the thing. I don’t support Ron Paul.

Proof? The very Red State comment thread on the South Carolina Republican debate that caused me to get banned. Here’s what I said in comment #288:

“… Brit Hume blew it, aside from not asking Paul about his racist newsletters.

    And later, comment #292:

Surprise Debate Winner Based on Actual Voting Data

Clearly Ron Paul won the debate… based on Fox News text voting.

    Exit question: How’d that happen?

I threw in the exit question to provoke thought and humor about the Ronbots and “Romulans” furiously texting away to skew the results. But do the idiots who run Red State get the humor or even ask a question before Stalinesquely purging me? Hardly.

I was so not surprised to be banned — because they have a reputation for being a closed shop and are no friends of free speech (not even in this case, seemingly, where my position is in agreement with their position… which is why I refer to them as morons).

Well, I ask rhetorically, what more would I expect of a site co-founded by plagiarist Ben Domenech, who is a blog poster on the site to this day?

Cross posted at various places out of frustration to get my point across. They gave me no warning, nor even an email, and I certainly won’t waste my time begging them for posting privileges so I can agree with them and get banned for it.

  16. Fred’s biggest problem is that many people say things like “If Fred had a chance of winning, he’d get my vote.” Of course, if he shows any chance of winning he could turn that into a surprise….

  17. Red State banned Christoph?

I guess we’re stuck with you.
