DRJ — Gone!

DRJ told me before my Christmas vacation that she needed to stop guest blogging. I prevailed on her to continue while I was out of town, and she kindly agreed. But despite a lot of whining, wailing, and gnashing of teeth on my part, I can’t get her to continue on a regular basis. I’m still hopeful that she’ll pop in from time to time — as often as she can possibly manage — when there is breaking news I can’t immediately cover, or new stories on topics that fall within her areas of expertise. Failing that, though, this place is going to revert to its previous, somewhat boring (and entirely sports-free) status. Sorry about that.

Oh come on ๐Ÿ™‚ ; this is a terrific site. And all the posters here are great. But will miss DRJ; she was a great guest blogger w/ fun posts. And she always made civil comments to everyone no matter what – that’s noticed by people and appreciated whether or not it was said to her enough.

Wish her all the best back at work (was that where she was headed?) and hope she decides to pop in from time to time for a post.

  4. DRJ will be missed by this reader.
We can only hope that she will grace us with the occasional visit now and then, like a favorite aunt stopping-by to bring light-and-joy, and interesting presents, for an all-too-brief moment.
As they used to (and perhaps still do) say:
    May success follow your flag!

  8. DRJ has been a wonderfully rangy poster. With humor, timeliness, thoughtfulness in her posts, she was also a very astute listener as could be surmised if one watched her in action in the comment section. Will look forward to an occasional post or comment as time allows her. I’ve enjoyed her tremendously. I say thanks to her, and to you for having the insight to ask her to step in.

  10. So DRJ is no longer a regular guest?

Yeah, I’m done with this place. It was “ok” before she came on board, but going back to how it used to be… meh…

  11. I normally am never interested in “guest” bloggers, and when I see them on other sites, I don’t bother reading. But DRJ’s posts were an exception. I hope she changes her mind!

  15. DRJ – I have very much enjoyed your posts and participation in the comments section. I hope you continue to post when time permits, on a more frequent than not basis.

Not posting, however, is no excuse for avoiding the comments section!

  16. Thanks for investing your time in this site, DRJ.

Patterico – Give yourself some credit.

  17. DRJ has always brought such grace and poise along with a superb eye for detail to her posts. I always admire her ability to stay out of the fray and remain gracious yet steadfast in her views. A very admirable quality, indeed.

  18. DRJ is one of my oldest cyber-buddies…we became friends and allies at another site (message board) a few years ago, a veritable tag team. When I got kicked off that site and started my own blog, she commented on how time-consuming blogging must be, and said “I don’t know how you bloggers do it.” And then look and see what went and happened to her next….

Hah! DRJ will be back in the blogosphere, in one form or another, before too long. She just needs a little rest.

  21. You’ve been doing some damned fine work, DRJ. I’m glad you’ll be staying in touch.

  22. i’m sorry she’s gone, but i expect we’ll be hearing from her again. it takes a certain amount of vanity to stand up on a virtual soapbox and harangue into cyberspace on a regular basis, she appeared to enjoy it, so she’ll either be back here or start her own blog.

oh, and your blog doesn’t have to be sports-free. question for patterico: are you a bruin fan or a trojan fan? since you live in los angeles, it has to be one or the other, any kind of evenhanded diplomacy here will just make you look like a wuss. i’ve been a bruin fan for four and a half decades.

  23. I’m not a fan of either, but if I had to pick one I’d pick UCLA.

  24. “but if I had to pick…”

Not exactly the start of a passionate sports blog. The man knows his limitations!

  25. RE: #18, yup, i agree, DRJ will be back, you could tell she enjoyed doing it and was pretty damned good at it too!!!

If it carries any weight, I will add my regrets
to your decision, DRJ. You not only post rationally, but respond to comments with class.

Very well said, Another Drew. I’m going to miss your posts as well, DRJ, and hope for lots of comments.

  30. DRJ, Don’t go; You have made a terrible mistake and can still obtain enlightenment. I asked you to find any authority that stated Joe Horn could avail himself to the defense of property statutes (instruction to the jury) under the circumstances of killing the two thieves during the day.

I have read the suggested issue of The Texas Prosecutor and , on the same page (15) to which you directed me, I have found the answer that you have missed.

In the first full paragraph of page fifteen, it reads as follows:

“Typically, evidence that the victim was committing one of the more violent of the aforementioned crimes will resolve whether a defendant was justified in using deadly force. For example, a defendant who uses a rifle to protect himself from someone with a shotgun demanding money (Robbery) is entitled to an instruction on defense of property.”

Now, you allege that Mr. Horn was entitled to asset the statute because the nighttime element only obtains when there is a theft. (I still smile at the absurdity of that conclusion.) But Mr. Newell, who authored the article you suggested, makes it clear that using deadly force the only applies to the “more violent of the aforementioned crimes.” In this article he is referring to defense of property statutes we have discussed. Mr. Newell is simply interpreting the plain meaning (intent) of the statute.

Is it your opinion that “theft” (taking a newspaper off someone’s porch) is more violent than robbery, burglar and arson as stated in the statute.

David Newell is an outstanding attorney; heed his advice.
