Academy Award-winning actor Sean Penn endorsed Dennis Kucinich for president in San Francisco Friday.

Penn made what had been billed as a “major political statement” at San Francisco State University

Andy Juniewicz, National Press Secretary and senior advisor to Kucinich told NBC11 that Penn made the endorsement at an open-to-the-public event sponsored by The San Francisco State College Democrats.

The event was paid for by Kucinich for President 2008.

Penn has donated $4,600 to John Edwards’ campaign and $2,300 to Kucinich during this cycle, per FEC campaign finance data, NBC’s Domenico Montanaro said.

Penn was set to deliver “a blistering indictment of political leaders and an impassioned endorsement of Presidential proportions,” according to a Kucinich press release.

[Stop it — you’re killing me.. hahahahahahahahahahahaha]

“Penn and Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich have been close friends for years, but the Kucinich campaign was not involved with Penn in preparing the remarks he plans to deliver today,” Juniewicz said.

“Sean Penn is a good friend, but he’s also a very intense, independent-minded person,” said the spokesman for the Kucinich campaign. “He’s going to say whatever he’s going to say.”

Penn, who is a Marin County resident, has become increasingly well known [?] for his support of liberal political and social causes.

He is also a longtime critic of the Bush administration.

In August Penn met with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez for two hours.

In June of 2005 Penn visited Iran acting as a journalist for the San Francisco Chronicle.

[What about his trip to Iraq before the war?]

After Hurricane Katrina, Penn traveled to New Orleans where he helped provide aid to victims.

Penn has starred in more than 40 movies.

He was awarded an Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in “Mystic River.”

Penn is slated to star in the Gus Van Sant movie “Milk,” the biography of the San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk who, along with Mayor George Moscone, was shot and killed in November 1978 by another supervisor, Dan White.

  2. So now Kucinich has locked up Penn and Shirley MacLaine? Talk about an embarrassment of riches, emphasis on “embarrassment.”

  5. David E — I think Clooney is absolutely right, and while I disagree with just about every policy position that Obama has — as well as Clooney — I respect the dignity with which he is running his campaign. If I had to chose between the Dem. candidates, I would take Obama hands down, though he is dangerously short of experience.

But Edwards is a phony, Clinton will take us exactly to where Obama is warning about, and the rest of the Dem field — with the exception of Biden — is a joke-fest.

Its really a shame that Biden has spent his entire career as a gaffe-maker. He’s actually a serious thinker on big issues — but his worst habit is that he does too much of his thinking out loud.

But, as a GOP’er, I say “BRING ON KUCINICH!!!!”

  6. Clooney thinks the Democrats will have a veto-proof margin in both Houses after 2008? Was that party being held *in* a drug rehab center, or was he just on his way to check into one?

    M. Scott Eiland (113229)

  7. Yeah, I saw that too. Other than humor, it’s of no importance — which makes it funnier, naturally.

  8. My mother-in-law worked in the movie industry for 40 years, going back to the 1930s. In those days, actors and actresses were referred to as “talent” and no one ever took anything they said seriously. Another bit of common sense we have lost.

  9. I haven’t checked but I’d be surprised if enough GOP Senate seats were even up for election to mathematically allow that large a gain.

  10. Well who would the spawn of one of the Hollywood be most likely to endorse?

  11. I also love the breathless importance of the link to

Full Text Of Sean Penn’s Endorsement Speech!

I hope Patterico and Staff are analyzing same and will have a thoughtful critique soon.

Does the lack of photos suggest that maybe no one showed up for the speech, LOL?

Oh GAWD is that ever true!

I was at an event where Charlton Heston was the luncheon speaker. Oh goodness, it was 45 minutes of ancient movie reruns! I kept wanting to see CH, but he was a no show. But all the characters he has ever played showed up.

Penn is a very talented actor. Something he should stick to. His judgment on environmental and social issues seems a bit screwed up.

  13. I wonder if Kucinich’s turn on Syrian TV (where he lauded the monster Assad and denounced America) is what turned it for Penn.

    HUAC obviously failed.

    Kevin Murphy (0b2493)

  14. Sean who?

    Stan Switek (7cfd24)

  15. Sean Penn is sui generis. But what Clooney has to say echoes quite clearly what a great many Democrats feel about Hillary Clinton. The fact that George Clooney is a handsome, famous and successful actor who you would all eagerly sell your mother to be shouldn’t get away from that simple fact.

    David Ehrenstein (5f9866)

  16. The fact that George Clooney is a handsome, famous and successful actor who you would all eagerly sell your mother to be shouldn’t get away from that simple fact.

Ya know, that’s just out and out weird. Is that how you form opinions? On who you would like to be or not be? Or perhaps the better question is why you assume others form critical opinions based on a projection of your desire to be or not be someone?

    Just Passing Through (d7a06d)

  17. That’s not how I’d like to be. I’m happy with who I’ve been for the last 60 years. I’m just commenting on those dismissive of “the talent.”

    David Ehrenstein (5f9866)

  18. “Entertainers and stars are all the same thing; they’re all on one side of the issue, they only know that Clinton is right, the Democrats are right and no matter how they persecute people or how fraudulent they are, they’re always right. There’s a sick need in actors to prove to themselves that they’re great compassionate people, that they’re great humanitarians because they feel guilty. They’re getting paid for nothing, they get paid billions of dollars for nothing, they know they don’t deserve it, so, because most of them got no talent, they got no brains, they got nothing. They’re basically morons!”

    Jackie Mason

    nk (19e0fd)

  19. George who??

    Stan Switek (7cfd24)

  20. “I’m just commenting on those dismissive of “the talent.”

David, if Penn was endorsing Mike Huckabee, you would agree with me. You cannot get past your own politics. You know very well what old Hollywod thought of actors’ politics. I remember reading about Humphrey Bogart flying to Washington to testify about some issue he knew nothing about. Afterwards, he realized he had been set up by the communists and disavowed his testimony. At least he had the guts and common sense to recognize his mistake.

    Mike K (693378)

  21. If given the chance Jackie Mason would vote for Hitler.

    David Ehrenstein (5f9866)

  22. As the Iowa Primary comes closer, candidates are starting to pick up significant endorsements that could raise their popularity ratings. For example, Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement of Barack Obama is viewed as a major factor in the Democratic Primary, especially considering their pending joint appearance in South Carolina, which has now been switched to a venue capable of accommodating 80,000 people-certainly bad news for Hillary.

Not to be outdone, Dennis Kucinich, hereto considered the cellar dweller of the Democratic pack, has picked up a giant endorsement from……..none other than Hollywood’s Sean Penn! As Lawrence Welk used to say, “Ah wonderful, ah wonderful-ah!”

Well, this just might be the turning point of the campaign! It should not come as unexpected, however. Why wouldn’t Penn, who has traveled the globe to suck up to Iraq’s Saddam Hussein and Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, embrace the very candidate (Kucinich) who recently traveled to Syria to embrace the dictator, Assad, and criticize his own president and country in the process? As they say, there’s a lid for every pot.

Curiously, however, Kucinich’s campaign was somewhat reserved in its response to the Penn endorsement, stating in effect that Penn is an “intense individual, who says what he thinks, no matter what.” Huh? Maybe the Kucinich people (are there more than one?)have figured out that the endorsement of someone as anti-American as Sean Penn might be considered as a negative.

The other tidbit that came out of the Kucinich campaign this week was that if nominated, he would consider as his running mate, among others,California Representative Maxine Waters, probably the most odious and obnoxious person in the entire US Congress. You know, someone who if anything happened to Kucinich, would be qualified to step in immediately as president.

But enough about Kucinich. Let’s get back to reality. Frontrunner Hillary Clinton also picked up a valuable endorsement this week. Guess who? Jennifer Flowers.

Two more reasons why you will not be taken seriously.

  24. David’s comment 23 is pretty low, even by his snake-belly standards. To say that someone like Jackie Mason who identifies so strongly with his Jewish heritage would “vote for Hitler” is beyond obnoxious. Usually David is worth ignoring, but this time he needs to be called on his douchebaggery.

    JVW (477e5a)

  25. This Sean Penn is an obvious impostor. Everybody knows that years ago, the real Sean Penn was imprisoned for life in Gitmo for dissenting against Bush’s Amerikka.

    Even Dennis should know that.

  26. Were the Republicans this negative about actors when Ronald Reagan was running?

    Andrew J. Lazarus (3ba21d)

  27. I know my mother was but she’s not a Republican, or a Democrat for that matter. Pretty independent. For as long as I remember, “actor” and “clown” are synonymous to her.

  28. The fact that George Clooney is a handsome, famous and successful actor who you would all eagerly sell your mother to be shouldn’t get away from that simple fact.

Projection, thy name is David E.!

And when was the last time Clooney was asked a political question by someone who WOULDN’T fellate him on command?

  29. Beware of anyone supported by a left-wing scum bag like SEAN PENN

    krazy kagu (9baf51)

  30. Were the Republicans this negative about actors when Ronald Reagan was running?

Right, cuz everyone knows Reagan went straight from Hellcats of the Navy to the White House.

When Sean Penn becomes a state governor or works in a non-Hollywood job, then you can compare him to Reagan.

  31. It’s too bad they don’t give Sean Penn roles of people smarter than him in real life to play any more, like Spiccoli.
