Girls with Guns

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 11:18 pm

Meryl Yourish has a post titled Girls with Guns. Good title, and it has pictures. But she blew the opening line. The best one has already been taken:

The other day I spent most of the morning with a .38 in my hand.

OK, so you can’t use that, Meryl. But you get the idea.

  1. Another formerly liberal wakes up. The police can not be on your doorstep 24/7 to prevent a home invasion. The police and government aren’t liable for damages if they don’t answer a 911 call. You have to be able to defend yourself.

This brings up another FUBAR in US Society. That is protecting the criminal aggressor. Not only should a person not be bothered by an investigation for shooting a burglar in your home, they should be congratulated. Any lawyer filing a wrongful death suit for such an event should be permanently disbarred and forced to reimburse for any legal expenses caused by filing the suit.

    I don’t agree at all.

is just one example of why citizens shouldn’t be given carte blanche to kill someone in or around their home with no oversight. At the very least it makes a gun owner exercise some judgment. And a medal?? Come on.

  3. Nice of you to apologize for the bad link. Now apologize for the non sequitur.

  4. Voice of reason, as Xrlq mentions that link ( gee, had to go back 15 years for an off topic example too ) has nothing to do with the commentator you pretend to be answering. No one thinks that was a reasonable shooting and no one has proposed any laws that would excuse it.

  5. #4&5 and oversight has everything to do with the comment I replied to. PCD obviously feels no oversight is needed.

    What part of
Not only should a person not be bothered by an investigation for shooting a burglar in your home, they should be congratulated.

    doesn’t compute?

  6. What doesn’t compute? It had absolutely nothing to do with the shooting you link to.

Other than that, it was a completely on topic comment …

  7. I think it is highly likely I will at least buy a rifle for target shooting. As for home protection, I haven’t gotten that far yet.

A rifle is just fine for home protection. The attitude and habits are far more important, though.

  8. SPQR,
I’ll be sure to email you with my draft comments in the future to get clearance.

  9. I’m sure that would improve the quality and topicality of your comments greatly.

  10. I look forward to being your new dependent.

  11. Wouldn’t you prefer the term “protege” ?

    SPQR (26be8b)

  12. No, not really because that means that you must be wiser or more important than me. You fail on both counts but I’ll still be your friend.

    doesn’t compute?

The part about Yoshihiro Hattori supposedly being (1) a burglar (2) in Rodney Peairs’s home.

  14. I’m glad she wrote that. I want to learn how to shoot and buy some protection (my neighborhood is sinking fast, like most of SoCal) but didn’t know where to start. Maybe I could ask for one of those cute shoulder-mounted RPG thingies for Christmas…or maybe I should get some expert instruction first like Meryl.

  15. Patricia– for real home protection? I suggest a shotgun.

Thanks to the movies, the sound is nearly as effective as a pistol in the face, if you put in birdshot it’ll hurt, but won’t go through walls, and it’s really hard to miss.

  16. Thanks, Foxfier, a shotgun is what a friend of mine, a former cop, also recommended.
