A Thanksgiving Thought

Be thankful you aren’t this Denver man’s automobile insurance company:

“The 24-year-old man who rammed into the back of an RTD bus Monday night had been cited two other times for accidents within three weeks.

“He’s had a bad month,” said Steve Davis, Lakewood police spokesman.

Nathan Goodson, 24, of Lakewood was cited for careless driving Monday night in the accident that sent 12 people — including him — to the hospital, Davis said. The bus was eastbound around 8:30 p.m. when it stopped at Teller Street to drop off passengers. Witnesses said a 2006 Dodge was traveling east on West Colfax Avenue going up to 75 mph when it crashed into the back of the bus.

Goodson was seriously injured but did not have life-threatening injuries, Davis said. Firefighters had to cut him out of the wreckage. He was taken to St. Anthony Central Hospital. The bus was carrying 20 passengers, and of those, 11 were injured. Their conditions were unavailable.

Davis said that Goodson was charged with hit-and-run and failure to maintain brakes after an accident Oct. 29. Then on Nov. 17, he was cited for careless driving after his second accident, Davis said. When he struck the bus Monday — his third accident — he was driving a rental car, Davis said.

Goodson also was cited for careless driving in Denver on Nov. 14, 2001, when he was 18, according to Denver County Court records.”

A bad month, indeed, and it may get worse when he goes to court on these charges.

  1. The big news is that 9 people on the bus admitted they weren’t injured.

  2. Six to twelve months in jail and five or ten years license suspension sounds about right for this guy. He had his chance to learn to drive responsibly and blew it.

  3. Wishful thinking, Denver traffic court is a joke.

  4. that’s nothing. in the space of just one month, my youngest brother wrecked a motorcycle, a fancy toyota “toyota racing development” truck, and not one, not two but three rental cars.

  5. Does anyone know his insurance company? I was involved in the second accident, but none of us can get his insurance info. The second accident had 8 cars!

  6. jhr,

Eight cars? What a mess. I hope you are okay.

I don’t know his insurance company or even if he had insurance. I hoped for the sake of everyone involved that he did.

  7. Hopefully he gets some jail time and a long suspension of his license.
Kind of related and may be of use to those with kids who drive. One of my kids blew a red light and hit a casino shuttle bus. Everyone was okay and went on to gamble that evening. About a week later five of the six passengers contacted lawyers about suing.
My kid just happened to have insurance in her name and wasn’t on our policy. Her car was totalled. After the accident she continued paying for “non-owner’s insurance”. Our insurance company advised doing this because to put her back on our policy could possibly have made our assets reachable in any lawsuits. fortunately no one followed through and the deadline to file came and went.
Hope someone benefits from the tip.

  8. jhr – Just a thought, if there were 8 cars involved, and questions of whether or not there is insurance, you will want to place your carrier on notice of the potential for under-insured and/or un-insured Property Damage and Bodily Injury claims. Also, you should make a claim on your Medical Payments coverage, if you elected to carry that.

A question of coverage for the gentleman, along with the numerous claims that will be presented should he have coverage, can almost guarantee that this matter will take a long time to sort out, whereas, your coverage, if available, will not have the same impediments.

Or any of the claimants. It’s a safe bet he’s blown through his policy limits several times over.
