Online Review: Don’t Go to this Sports Bar

I strongly recommend you avoid this sports bar but if you do go, be sure to pay:

“The owner of a popular Brooklyn Park sports bar is scheduled to appear in Hennepin County District Court this week on charges he assaulted a customer. Brooklyn Park police said the incident happened last June at Blondie’s bar. That’s when a customer tried to cancel a food order and got into a dispute with the owner and bar staff. Police said the man had stopped there for a bite to eat between jobs.

“It is not like he was drunk and disorderly. There was a dispute over the time it was going to take for his food. But he decided he didn’t want to pay for it and for that he ends up with these types of serious injuries,” said acting Brooklyn Park Police Chief Greg Roehl.

Investigators say the owner, Thor Gunderson, even tried to stop the man from calling 911 for help. When police got to the bar, they say they found the customer bleeding and on the ground, restrained by Gunderson and a bouncer.

“At the hospital they determined he had an injury which was to his scrotum and that one of his testicles was actually torn loose,” said Roehl.”

It’s hard to believe Blondie’s is so popular since it has the highest number of police calls for any area bar (then again, maybe that’s why it’s so popular):

“WCCO-TV obtained documents from Brooklyn Park police which confirmed problems aren’t unusual at Blondie’s. In fact, Roehl noted the bar has the highest number of police calls of any liquor establishment in the city. The reports show 242 police calls so far this year.”

I have a new motto for Blondie’s: Pay now or we’ll make sure you pay later.

UPDATE BY PATTERICO:

“At the hospital they determined he had an injury which was to his scrotum and that one of his testicles was actually torn loose,” said Roehl.

Hmm. Did this guy propound any torture hypotheticals? He might have run into John Cole.

Not surprising to us Twin Cities residents, DRJ. Blondie’s tends to attract the shady element of humanity; of course, so does the city it is located in.

What is surprising to me is that WCCO-TV had to obtain police reports to confirm the problems there, considering the bar’s reputation preceeds itself.

    I have no words.

I would be owning that bar by the time the court cases are done.

Just so I could have it burned to the ground…

  3. Scott – That seems like an incredibly grotesque injury, no? I flinched a little when reading it.

  5. It sounds like it’s popular for the entertainment – live fights.

  6. Maybe daleyrocks is right that this is the new trend in bar entertainment.

Is that a hypothetical in your pocket, or are you just happy to see a dead horse?

    (Sorry, can’t sleep tonight.)

  8. Crap, I hit the submit button before I was done (the dangers of a trackpad right under the keyboard).

Added: I’ve actually been to that bar – it is maybe 5 or 6 miles from my apartment. A friend who had just moved pretty close to it suggested it as an easy meeting place before we found somewhere else to have dinner, given that neither of us were that familiar with the area. Admittedly, I’ve only been there once, but it did seem a rather rowdy place, and security seemed somewhere between pretty aggressive and outright hostile. Especially after seeing this, I don’t plan to do any investigation as to whether that’s generally true.

  9. Steroids.

Bar owners, bartenders and bouncers using and distributing steroids. If I was a cop I’d look into it, because it sounds like ‘roid rage type behavior from ownership and staff.

That said, I think John Woo weighed in with the opinion that if the Executive branch were owners of the bar and the customer was a known terrorist with connections to an imminent threat, then detaining the subject by the testicle scrunch method would be a legal exercise of Executive power regardless of what the knucklehead Senators from NY and Massachusetts have to say.
