Stupid Criminals, Vol. 1

Does Patterico have a Stupid Criminals series? I don’t recall seeing one so I’ll make this my first entry:

“A man was arrested and accused of drug possession after telling authorities that two masked gunmen had stolen 150 pounds of marijuana from his home.

Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the home in South Texas to find the door kicked in and nearly 15 pounds of pot on the floor, Sheriff Lupe Trevino said.

Jose Guadalupe Flores, 35, escaped while the men ransacked the house but returned and told the deputies that he had been wrapping the drugs for shipment when the intruders arrived. “The guy walked right up and said the drugs were his,” Trevino said. “That’s not the smartest move.”

Flores, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, was charged with felony possession of marijuana at a hearing Monday. Because of his immigration status, Flores will be jailed until his case is heard. Authorities were still searching for the gunmen.”

Zero tolerance, squared.

  1. Its not really that stupid. The same kind of think happens in San Francisco, only the owner of the dope says someone stole his “medical marijuana”, and the police go away.

  2. I agree Probably not that stupid (though I’d bet even the SF police would think twice about letting someone off for 150 lbs of medical marijuana.) I think its a case of an illegal paying the price for not adequately assimilating into American culture. Based on his experience in his native land, he probably fully expected the cops to help him recover his pot – for a nominal fee.

  3. Well, the whole concept of “Stupid Criminals” assumes that there is another kind.

  4. Obvious illustration of ‘this is your mind on drugs’…nothing but stupid. (perhaps another reason to not legalize – do we really want more stupid people?)

  5. Actually this speaks well to the type of law enforcement they have in Hidalgo County.
I know that illegals in my town are much more likely to call and report crimes because they know they will get a fair shake regardless of status.

People in Mexico do not call the generic police for much… but for this type of thing they have specific individual police to call…. or else they know that it was the police who stole their stuff so why bother causing more trouble..

I saw an episode of COPS once where a woman put $20 through the door at a crack house and got none… so she flagged down the police. From there her day went even more downhill, but I think the whole idea of unethical crack dealers stung.

Those are called ‘Politicians’, and they’re only slightly better at hiding the pork.

  7. Well, up here in Spokane my car was broken in to while I was out of the country– they stole the radio, emptied the glove box (with checkbook) and stole my rear left tire.

Two days after I reported it, a detective called and asked if I’d had my checkbook stolen.

….one of the thieves had gotten upset at the other and told the cops that there was stolen stuff in his buddy’s car. Both are currently awaiting trial.
