GOP Senators Prove They Want to be Re-Elected

[Guest post by DRJ]

In a move Senator Harry Reid quipped was “very courageous,” Senator George Voinovich-OH and three GOP Senators who face re-election (Alexander-TN, Dole-NC, and Coleman-MN) have united to support the Wait-Until-Bush-Is-Gone (*the Woe-B-Gone*) Withdrawal Plan from Iraq:

“A small group of Republicans facing election fights next year have rallied around war legislation they think could unite the GOP: Call for an end to U.S. combat in Iraq, but wait until President Bush is out of office.
***
The proposal, by Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, would require that Bush change the mission of U.S. troops from combat to primarily support roles, such as training Iraqi security forces and protecting U.S. infrastructure in Iraq. His legislation would set a goal of completing such a mission transition within 15 months.

If enacted immediately, that timeline would not kick in until Bush’s last couple weeks in office.”

I assume these Senators are also voicing the frustrations their constituents feel with the Iraq war but it’s disappointing when Senators and Americans turn into jellyfish.

  1. This fits nicely with what Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, the guy in charge of the Iraq war durng the first year, has been saying:

[I] eventually came to the conclusion, he says, that Republican politics had trumped the national security interests of the United States in the execution of plans in Iraq. The Bush Administration had not planned to win in Iraq, but simply to keep a war running so Bush could run around and play “war president.”

Once Bush is gone, the Iraq war is no longer needed.

  2. Another perfectly good thread already poisoned with Alphie’s delusions.

  3. What disgraceful bastards (and a bitch).

They want U.S. Forces to fight — kill — and die — until 2009, THEN they simply withdraw in defeat regardless of facts on the ground?

  4. SPQR,

alphie’s lying. Sanchez did not say that. That was Scott Horton’s spin of Sanchez’ position. Horton is pulling an alphie.

  5. Maybe we should have a contest as to who can first “out-alphie” alphie.

On a serious note, if anything with a proposal like this can be called serious, I hope they all are challenged in the primaries and lose, but I doubt it since the Repubs like to stick with incumbants. If they don’t think what we are doing is reasonable they should say so now. This half-hearted stuff will just get them disliked by everybody. Driving down the middle of the road gets you side-swipped on both sides.

  6. ‘Once Bush is gone, the Iraq war is no longer needed.’

Nope. Bush is clearly cognizant of his legacy, but feels history will favor him, in time.

But he is lazy, ignorant, stubborn and incurious.

Good qualities for an IRS agent, bad for Chief Executive. And that’s bad for anyone tied to his hip.

  7. JPT, yep, as usual.

  8. Is there a secret let’s-destroy-the-Republican- Party handshake among these RINOs?

  9. But he is lazy, ignorant, stubborn and incurious.

Your are describing Bill and Hillary Clinton – right? – the royal couple that has not had a real job in 20 years.

  10. You can call it spin if you want, MD, but you can’t deny there is a growing number of senior military officers calling for an end to Bush’s social experiment in Iraq.

Plus we have the Burmese monks, who have done more for the cause of freedom in the last week than the U.S. military has in the last six years.

It’s going to get harder and harder for Republicans to keep up the smiley war face act going into the election, which is not that far off now.

  11. #9. Perfect Sense when did either Bill or Thunder Thighs ever have a real job?

  12. Alphie,

The way things are going, it’s going to be harder and harder for the Democrats to maintain the “We’re Losing” sad face going into the election.

  13. “Plus we have the Burmese monks, who have done more for the cause of freedom in the last week than the U.S. military has in the last six years.”

You just can’t get moonbat statements like that from any other insane person than alphie.

  14. And the Republicans slowly slip back into their role as enablers for the welfare state.

  15. KM, sad but true. In few years Republican “opposition” will be: We can’t spent a $100 billion on that new social program, but we can afford $90 billion!

  16. “Plus we have the Burmese monks, who have done more for the cause of freedom in the last week than the U.S. military has in the last six years.”

The Burmese monks have not even provided free elections in Burma, much less Iraq, Afghanistan, Japan, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Italy, South Korea, etc.

  17. Hello alphie.

  18. Drj you idiot he was killed last year too. Look it up. And read sanchez’ own words then tell us what they they mean.
Or better yet sign up and go. I’m sure Blackwater would hire you as a merc.

  19. Blah,

Last year’s martyr was Abu Ibrahim al-Tunisi. This one was Abu Osama al-Tunisi. Different guys who both were apparently from Tunisia.

As for General Sanchez, I wasn’t the one discussing that but I read what he said at his speech in Corpus Christi. He was sufficiently vague that you can’t be sure if he was talking about the Bush Administration or more generally about the politicians in Washington. I wish General Sanchez would clarify what he meant – either way – but so far he’s refused.

  20. You are mistaken. Abu usama both times. Sorry.
And you discount the article as spin even with sources.

I know its a conspiracy and the soldiers are pussies or whatever limbaugh said.
What can I say to that?

    blah (389e83)

  21. What can I say to that?

You don’t need to say much of anything. So far all I’ve read from you is regurgitation of Koskiddie nonsense. Folks like you and alphie don’t matter except in mob scenarios where handlers do your thinking for you.

  22. ‘Drj you idiot he was killed last year too.’

You are a little quick to characterize DRJ.

I find her eminently reasonable, patient and intelligent.

    Pander key ‘off’.

  23. Senator George Voinovich has always been a disgrace and I am very sorry for voting for him when I lived in Ohio.

“I know its a conspiracy and the soldiers are pussies or whatever limbaugh said.”
You’re not the smart one in your family, are you.

  24. When has any group of politicians not distanced themselves from a failed leader? Politicians, like the American people, like a winner. Bush won that second term because he said “I’m gonna win the war”, ….and then (apparently)continued doing it his way which still doesn’t look like winning the war. Why are all you armchair warriors not out there signing up to go to(or go back to if you are a real warrior) Iraq? Too busy making money? “Other priorities”? Or could it be that even people who would sign up to go or warriors who would take on a (number)th tour are waiting for someone who they think can actually lead them to victory?
