Another Very Interesting Article — Call It “Teaser #2”

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 12:14 am

OK, I suppose it’s starting to look like I’m teasing you — and I suppose I am — but I want you to read this. It’s background material for a post I’m working on. Read it all, and you’ll be in a position to understand my upcoming post, which deals with the modern-day equivalent of “L.A. Confidential.”

Tupac Shakur. Biggie Smalls. Suge Knight. David Mack. Rafael Perez. Kevin Hackie. Waymond Anderson. Chuck Philips. Russell Poole.

If these names mean anything to you, you’ll be interested.

Yesterday, I asked you to read this. That was background reading, too — very important background reading.

I’m going to tie it all together, but look, I’m getting to be an old man. I lack energy. If this were 2004, I’d probably already have a post up. But I’m old. Sheesh, I’m almost 40. I’m really busy at work. The kids are taking all the rest of my time.

Maybe next week.

But damn, it’s interesting.

  1. But I’m old. Sheesh, I’m almost 40. I’m really busy at work. The kids are taking all the rest of my time.

Criminy sakes “old man”—–if almost 40 is old and tiresome, you may have just planted half your readers in the ground.

On the more serious side, it’s refreshing to see you have your priorities straight—your kids should always come first.

  2. “But I’m old. Sheesh, I’m almost 40.”…..GEEZ ! should we set you up for regular deliveries of depends and a walker rental ? I do agree that your children must come first though. In all seriousness, I do have a question, looking for an opinion in light of your position and experience. This is ,potentially at least, a serious situation, and reflects extremely poorly on the rank and file as well as the command personel. But, is this type of behaviour limited to just the Rampart division or is it emblematic of the LAPD as a whole ? Is it limited to only the LAPD, or, does it permeate into other law enforcement entities, sheriffs dept, county, etc ?

  3. I think there are good and bad in every organization. The LAPD officers who hooked up with Suge Knight were particularly bad, and I’d like to think they were an aberration.

  4. I guess you’ll detail this in your post, but I wanna know–when was the prisoner telling the truth? The first time, and he’s now been threatened? (plausible–I’m sure the people he’s accused have connections in prison who could get to him) Or now, according to what he says in the recent deposition? (which is also quite plausible) Or is the answer “door #3,” something else entirely? This is fascinating.

  5. Wait until you’re almost 50.

If you hadn’t worn yourself out hiking in the Alps you would have had planty of energy.

Snide remarks aside, every 10 years that go by makes it harder to try to “get back in shape”. So my doctor’s advice is that you go on extended hikes with your family several times every year.

  6. This is a GREAT subject, one that has intrigued me for years. The book “LAbryinth” by Randall Sullivan is a must-read for those who want even more background.

Can’t wait for your post, thanks for your hard work Patterico!

  7. A mortgage broker who had access to 700k could have made a huge pile from 2003-2006. The initial stack would not even have had to been tapped. Just used as collateral, then replaced with new profits. Lots of money flying everywhere in the mortgage world and the carry trade since 2003.

Oh, puh-leeze! Some of us have 50 way in the rear view mirror!

  10. Was the movie “Training Day” loosely based on the Rampart mentality? I read where honest cops were transferring out as fast as they could, and that flick came to mind. The way the city paid off Johnny Cochran and Gaines’ family in the Lyga shooting made my blood boil.

  11. “and I’d like to think they were an aberration”…As would most of us. The LAPD seems to be in the news often for these types of incidents though. It can be argued that the particular circumstances of the locality and media exposure in general may play a larger than normal role in this. I can accept that as plausible ,at least. Correct me if I’m wrong.

  12. Hell, Patterico, I’m looking at 60 behind me. I, can be tired, but you? You’re a baby yet. Believe me.

  13. Sheesh, I’m almost 40.

I’m looking forward to the post about the Harley, the Porsche convertible or the skydiving.

  14. Fascinating. The Rampart story keeps twisting in and out into an unfathomable knot, doesn’t it?

  15. Patterico, did you ever finish your long post on Rampart/Biggie/Tupac et al?
