Deport the Criminals First — Part Sixteen of an Ongoing Series: Illegal Alien Tortures 8-Month Old Child to Death

[“Deport the Criminals First” is a recurring feature on this blog, highlighting crimes committed by illegal immigrants — with a special focus on repeat offenders. I argue that, instead of arresting illegal immigrants who work hard for a living, we should use our limited immigration enforcement resources to target illegal immigrants who commit crimes in this country.]

This is another story about border control — about what happens when the government manages to deport criminals . . . but can’t manage to keep them out of the country.

What happens is, sometimes a child dies.

A mother who said she mistakenly swabbed her baby’s nose with a methamphetamine-laced Q-tip told police that her parolee boyfriend refused to allow her to take the child to the hospital for fear that he would be sent back to prison, according to police reports made public this week.

Elizabeth Reta told detectives that instead of seeking proper medical help for her 8-month-old son, Samuel, her boyfriend, Juan “Johnny” Sanchez, tried for three days to get the child “off the high” by tying him to a bed, shaking him, slapping him and splashing him with cold water.

“She said she would beg Johnny to stop hitting the child, but he would tell her he knew what he was doing,” according to the reports.

Little Samuel Reta fell even more ill and eventually died from the alleged abuse, police say.

His mother and Sanchez are now in jail facing a murder charge.

There’s a special place in hell reserved for those who torture kids to death. If Elizabeth Reta is to be believed, that’s exactly what Johnny Sanchez did to poor little Samuel:

Reta told detectives that as Samuel began to react to the drugs, Sanchez spanked him and repeatedly slapped him on the face.

She said that when Samuel did not “snap out of it,” she saw Sanchez throw the child on the floor. She also said Sanchez tied Samuel to a bed, according to the reports.

The next day, Samuel still appeared to be in a daze, and Sanchez kept hitting the baby in the chest and buttocks, Reta told police.

This sort of thing went on for several days, Reta said. During that time Sanchez again tied the child to the bed and repeatedly hit him on the chest, according to the reports.

Our pal Johnny has a little record:

Sanchez, 32, was convicted of robbery in 2001 and deported, but apparently returned to the country illegally, authorities said.

Elizabeth Reta sounds like a horrible mother, and maybe she would have found another criminal to love, even if Johnny Sanchez hadn’t been in the picture — because he’s not supposed to be in this country.

But then again, maybe not.

Samuel Reta never even had a chance to see his first birthday. If our government committed the resources to keep illegals out of our country — especially illegals who commit robberies — maybe Samuel Reta would have grown up. Gotten married. Had a job, and kids, and a house.

But that’s not in the cards for little Samuel — thanks to another illegal alien criminal we couldn’t keep outside our porous borders.

  1. I don’t believe for a second that anyone was trying to revive that baby. They were abusing and torturing him and giving him drugs when he died.

I wish California had a special circumstance for the murder of children. Too often these child abuse cases reveal that the child was systematically abused over months if not years. Legally, it’s not torture, but still merits the death penalty.

  2. If Elizabeth Reta is to be believed…

    However:

I don’t believe for a second that anyone was trying to revive that baby. They were abusing and torturing him and giving him drugs when he died.

Seems a lot more believable to me.

They’re both horrible people. Illegal immigrants or not, they should both be executed.

They won’t be because the prosecutors have bought this pile of horse crap — or in any event cannot prove otherwise.

Yes, Sanchez should have been deported. However, the American in this case, Reta, did somehow manage to do what most parents avoid doing, which is to say swabbing her baby’s nose with methamphetamine. And then, if she’s to be believed, watch her boyfriend tie up and beat her baby for three days.

With a mother like that, her children were at risk to say the least.

One of he many reasons the criminal justice system must come down as hard on women who abuse or kill children as it does on men.

    Awful case all around.

Patterico — may I call them “evil” or are you going to come down on me for that?

  3. Then lets show this illegal alein there is a price to pay like sitting on death row and if mexico objects we can tell them to TAKE A HIKE

  4. Even if the story was as told, the effects of the methamphetamine had probably largely worn off by next morning I bet, and everything else was a result of the abuse.

It matters not. The main reason to forego the death penalty, as I see it, is to let them sit in a jail cell with a happy picture of the child (if one can be found) and one from the coroner, and see if one day they would regain their humanity and realize the brutality and wickedness of what they had done.

  5. and now california is going to invest over a million dollars present value in each one of these two to pay for trying them and warehousing them for the rest of their lives; far more than it will ever invest in law-abiding citizens of the same age. i don’t know how you can afford it. it wasn’t always like that.

Yeah, in the old days they’d just have shot the both of them and been done with it.

I am going to email every one of the ‘Deport the Criminals First’ to my state representatives at all levels (which include Feinstein and Boxer). This has got to stop.

MUNCIE — Simon Rios was sentenced today to life in prison for raping and killing 10-year-old Alexjandra Gutierrez, then leaving her body in a Delaware County gravel pit.

“Simon Rios is the most contemptible offender I have ever encountered,” Delaware County Prosecutor Mark McKinney said. “He should be put to death for what he has done, but there is truly no punishment that is severe enough.”

Gutierrez disappeared after walking to a school bus stop in Fort Wayne on Dec. 8, 2005, prompting a wide search. Rios picked up the girl in a van, raped and killed her, and then dumped the body in a gravel pit near Albany.

A few days later, Rios killed his wife and three children, strangling them with his hands and electrical cords. He also faces life in prison without parole for those killings, after pleading guilty last month and avoiding a possible death sentence.
That sentencing in Allen County will be Oct. 1

  12. Ah, but in the words from West Side Story:
    They’re depraved because they’re deprived.
Another crime to be laid at the feet of “society”.

  13. It’s easy to judge someone when you don’t really know them…I don’t know “Johnny” but I do know Elizabeth, “Liz”. She was a kind person and had two other boys before having Sam, she was dedicated not only to being a good mother but also being a good teacher to all children. She had a passion for working with children and making lesson plans they would enjoy. You must believe that there must have been circumstances that prevented her from getting the help that she needed for her son…and possibly to prevent the other two from being hurt.
