“Deport the Criminals First” — Part Five of an Ongoing Series: The DUI Murder of Jasmine Lawrence
[“Deport the Criminals First” is a recurring feature on this blog, highlighting crimes committed by illegal immigrants — with a special focus on repeat offenders. I argue that, instead of arresting illegal immigrants who work hard for a living, we should use our limited immigration enforcement resources to target illegal immigrants who commit crimes in this country — especially violent crimes.]
In yesterday’s edition of “Deport the Criminals First” we had a DUI death caused by an illegal immigrant in Charlotte, North Carolina with a previous conviction for DUI from a week earlier. Today we have a story of yet another DUI death caused by an illegal immigrant in Charlotte, North Carolina. This one also had a previous arrest for DUI:
A Mecklenburg County jury has found an illegal immigrant guilty of several charges resulting from a deadly 2005 crash.
Raymundo Pineda was found guilty of driving while impaired, hit-and-run and second-degree murder for the death of Jasmine Lawrence in April 2005.
Prosecutors said Pineda was driving drunk on Independence Boulevard when he hit Lawrence’s car and didn’t stop to help the injured woman.
Pineda will spend a minimum of 19 years in prison and will be deported when his sentence is complete.
Pineda had a prior arrest for DUI and should have been deported:
Pineda had been charged with driving while impaired a year before the fatal crash.
Regardless, he was apparently not deported. Now Jasmine Lawrence is dead.
I can only comment by using the glass-half-full description of the illegal immigrant / criminal record situation employed by the National Immigration Forum in recent testimony to Congress.
Talk about praising with faint damns…
Al Maviva (89d0b6) — 6/5/2007 @ 4:24 amWhy doesn’t someone sue the government for not doing their job and deporting these criminals. I would think they’d have a case.
Ed (1f7e7d) — 6/5/2007 @ 4:51 amWhy isn’t someone suing local/state governments for not turning illegal aliens over to ICE? What’s happening to federal employees that are not following federal law on this issue? What is happening to the funding going to “sanctuary cities” that have made it clear that they will not turn over illegals to ICE?
I remember reading something in a Constitutional Law class a few years ago about states having to follow federal law…obviously state and local governments feel they’re above that because of their concern for these people. Well, I’d like to see what their tone would be when the federal dollars are cut off and maybe a few officials are sued or put in jail for their actions.
Just my thoughts (IANAL)

Why do our politicians seemingly feel this is not a problem?
