Blog Issues

The blog has undergone a heavy regimen of improvement today, some of which knocked it offline temporarily, and some of which has made it look weird in different ways. But all of it should end up being a good thing in the long run. The weirdness is continuing even as I publish this post. But we’re working on it.

One positive has emerged. You may have noticed a little thingie that shows up next to your URL: a purple “P” in the same Gothic style font as appears at the top of the main page. That’s called a “favicon,” and it was given to me months ago by Anwyn, but nobody had been able to make it actually happen for my blog until I asked Evariste today. I think it’s pretty cool.

One of these days, we’re going to get everything ironed out so that the site doesn’t crater every time Glenn Reynolds decides to toss a link my way. And when that day comes, there will be much rejoicing.

Until then, be patient. Thanks for reading.

  1. You could try round robin DNS for load distribution. Inexpensive, but may keep you going when the big number of hits come your way.

The favicon is cool, by the way.

  2. Hi Patterico,

I noticed you changed your comment preview in the sidebar to give a summary of the comment, not the post it was made under.

The way you had it before was, hands down, the most user and debate friendly method of previewing comments I’ve ever seen on the Internet.

This looks cool, but is nowhere near as good for following a discussion on a topic of importance to the reader.

    Just sayin’.

Anyway, you dn’t need space between each comment so you could probably safely kill the linebreak. It’s better for the reader to have the comments condensed somewhat and see more on a page.

As I said, this was one of the best technical features on your blog.

  3. Still working on it. I’ve asked the tech guy to restore it the way it was; I’m not sure if it’s possible with the upgrade.

  4. And it killed my cookie. I re-entered my information. Let’s see if it remembers me.

The favicon only shows up on Favorites but I don’t have you on Favorites — I have you on my blogroll and pulldown menu.

Christoph, just put your cursor on the comment link and you’ll see what post the comment is about at the bottom of your screen.

  5. Heh. I like that it’s not so much that your blog goes “ouch” when Instapundit sends you a link, it’s that he does it so often. 🙂

The favicon works great on Firefox 2.something.

  6. I gotta agree with Christoph: the old “Recent Comments” format was better. It was easier to follow a particular thread that way.

  7. 2 3 6

I agree that the old recent comment format was much better.

  8. Upgrades are necessary evils, aren’t they?

I miss the toolbar that let me link, bold, blockquote, etc. Can we do links the old-fashioned HTML way or is that feature coming back, too?
