Boalt Dean Spends Taxpayer Money to Work Against Voter Initiative

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 10:23 pm

California’s Proposition 209 states:

The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.

So Christopher Edley Jr., the dean of Boalt Law School at Berkeley, is spending our tax dollars to try to provide “ammunition” to supporters of racial preferences:

As dean, Mr. Edley is pursuing an ambitious agenda that would put Boalt in the middle of debates over discrimination as well as over health care costs, technology and other difficult problems. The centerpiece of his plan is to build several new “institutes,” each devoted to studying issues like civil rights, technology, business law and health care.

. . . .

Mr. Edley said he hoped that research by one of the new institutes, the Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute on Race, Ethnicity and Diversity, will provide ammunition to supporters of using race in admissions.

Nice. Always good to see our tax dollars used to work against our popularly passed initiatives. Because that just makes so much sense.

  1. Patrick, the sheeple of California do not know what they are doing when they vote for propositions. That’s why they need the elected/non-elected public servants to tell them how to think.

Unfortunately there are so many unsophisticated within the unwashed masses, like Howard Jarvis, that keep bringing forth those pesky propositions. The California courts must do something to prevent those bourgeois from blocking the path to enlightenment.

Be sure to back your “Republican” governor in his push for universal health care. It’s free so no one has to pay for it. Right?

I don’t know whether to pity you for having to put up with the overabundance of progressive “right-think” in California or admire your fortitude for trying to stand up to it.

  2. I have been reading the Chronicle of Higher Education as a new subscriber recently. For those of you who are not familiar with it, you would be absolutely stunned by the degree to which university faculty assume that they are smarter, wiser, and more virtuous than the general public and therefore should be free to pursue any social policies they desire. This sort of arrogance coupled with a total aversion to public accountability is breathtaking. We would not accept this attitude from the business establishment, but somehow we tolerate it from the higher education establishment.

  3. This wouldn’t be so bad if the research was set up to be neutral and unbiased so that it might be produce results favoring either position. But what are the odds of that?

What’s even more astonishing is the lack of basic education and intellectual skills that so many of them demonstrate. They spend many, many years in classrooms, and receive a degree for those years spent, but they do not at all necessarily come out educated.

But then again, the goal of most college faculty these days is political activism, not education, so there’s nothing surprising about the fact that even faculty now lack basic intellectual skills. I regularly receive written communication from college faculty that is rife with grammar, spelling, and logic errors, and the problem gets worse every year. I am now in my twenty-second year of university teaching, and I despair at the damage done to education by political hacks replacing education with indoctrination.
