Patterico's Pontifications

Sandy Berger – A Blast From The Past

As long as Patterico is talking about the Sandy Berger scandal, I think readers should be reminded of Bill Clinton’s reaction to the charges:

“We were all laughing about it on the way over here. People who don’t know [Sandy] might find it hard to believe. But … all of us who’ve been in his office have always found him buried beneath papers.”

Given the way the traditional media has lied down on this story from the start, I’d be laughing too. First they yawned at the charges, then they yawned some more at the amazingly light sentence he received.

This is why I stand by my review of the original cut of “The Path To 9/11” which trashed Sandy Berger in a rather harsh manner. I freely admit that history may not have happened exactly as depicted in that film. But since both the participants and the media don’t seem particularly interested in revealing the full story of what really happened, then I will accept an film that may contain some inaccuracies but still gets close to a larger “artistic truth”.

Obviously I want objective truth. But when you are faced with a situation where the only choice is between “fake, but accurate” and “complete silence and stonewalling”, I’ll go with the “fake, but accurate” account.

It seems to me that the burden is on Sandy Berger in this instance.

  1. MSM publishes story on topic X.

Right-wing blogger links to MSM story on topic X, then complains MSM is ignoring topic X…

Rational people read right-wing blog post and suffer severe case of cognitive dissonance.

    Some kind of plot?

  2. I wouldn’t call the Path to 9/11 Berger segment “fake.” There is a difference between a well supported reconstruction and having a video of the event. Burger was trying (probably successfully) to steal the drafts of the report that would show whether it was true or not. Why would he steal a document that proves him right and “Path to 9/11 wrong?” He is a collector of rare documents ?

The correct terminology is “true but covered up.”

  3. Berger removed these documents because they had personal notations that he and other senior Clintoon types had scribbled in the margins or by underlining. Can you imagine the brouhaha that would have ensued had it been a Repub stealing docs? After the Plame flame-out over precisely nothing? neville up above is of course silly, but the MSM is colluding in the crimes of the left and inventing crimes by the right. Billy Jeff and his crew are a left-wing cabal supported by the LAT and NYT and the pilot fish.

Like his boss Billy Jeff, Berger is a liar through and through, and guilty of a felony that should bar him from classified documents for life. He is a criminal.

Of course, the NYT won’t cover this. It isn’t news unless it hurts Bush and Repubs.

  4. Well you’re just not screaming loud enough, daveinboca. Get that Governor of yours to do something. I believe he’s related to the President.

  5. Bill Clinton, now there is a man who liked Apple Jacks.

    Paul Jones (cfee12)

  6. My understanding is that when confronted by staff Amb. Berger claimed he was merely on his way to a karaoke bar. He was practicing his version of the old Sparks hit, Angst in My Pants. He had put the documents there to help him remember the correct dance moves.

  7. The media hasn’t “lied down” on this story. They’ve lain down on it.

  8. The Sandy Berger Thought Experiment…

Former National Security Advisor and current Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice was accused of the theft and descruction of classified materials related to 9/11……
