As Close As I Come to a Prediction

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 12:01 am

In a wonderfully understated post, Glenn Reynolds writes:

HUGH HEWITT is warning Republicans against excessive optimism.

It’s a very funny, subtle post — at least until you click on the link.

Of course, when you do, you learn that Hugh’s point is not that you should despair. It is that you should get out and vote. And I agree — at least if you live in a state with a contested Senate race. After all, what are we going to do if a new Supreme Court slot opens up? If you care about the judiciary the way I do, you want the Senate in our control if and when that happens.

So get out and vote.

Then despair.

P.S. Allah plans to be drunk tonight to ease the pain.

P.P.S. If you’re really looking for optimism, go to Big Lizards and keep scrolling. Dafydd ab Hugh has been looking at the polls and thinks things may not be that bad.

Me, I think Allah has a more realistic take.

  1. If you want unbridled optimism, go to the Strata-Sphere.

Here’s the homepage. The above is a great example of AJStrata’s analysis. It’s a great blog — very smart fellow. I think he’s way over optimistic, but Allahpundit is as usual overly pessimistic.

Still, I think this makes AP more realistic and smarter! Being drunk while receiving good news ain’t bad.

And if you want wisdom, you’ll find it from Markos Zúniga:

Guys, at this point the polls are pretty useless. We’ve got actual results coming tomorrow. What happens, happens. If you want to catch up on the last crush of polls, Pollster.com has them.

  2. I will be going out and voting, as I always do, although I suspect that you and I will be voting for different people.

But, that said, I would encourage all of you, my opponents and allies both, to vote today. Our system works best when every informed person participates.

  3. Cristoph: every time i’ve heard Markos speak (he shows up on various radio shows that I podcast, from time to time), I’m astonished at how reasonable he sounds.

  4. I won’t be voting until late this afternoon in California.

While I have worked hard on the candidates and the props, I have to admit I don’t have much of a clue about confirming all these judges. I’ve googled many and got little.

Trusting your position Patterico, is there any judges that you find not acceptable?

An email would work if ya have the time.

  5. oregon has vote-by-mail, and i mailed my ballot about two weeks ago. we don’t have a contested senate race this year.
it’s a little like sports. for the first game of the regular season, the true fan takes his seat buoyed with optimism. this year our quarterback won’t be dropping the ball all the time (hello 49er alex smith, who rewarded the faithful so far this year by keeping a good handle on it). this year our defense will step up its game (san francisco 9, minnesota 3 on sunday). several strong players will unexpectedly emerge from seemingly nowhere to help us.
honestly, i don’t think the niners will make the super bowl this year, but nancy pelosi will become speaker of the house, and she will do a lot better job than hastert. for the senate, i predict 49 republicans, 49 democrats, and at least one independent, with connecticut too close to call. if lamont can knock off that awful, utterly self-interested, moralistic eunuch-voiced undemocrat, i might go outside and fire a six-gun salute (it’s safe to do this where i live). when the smoke clears, the democrats will have 51 votes to control the chamber.
i wish the libertarians would become a major league franchise, but i have no evidence from which to conclude that this will ever happen. for now, i’ll back any party opposing the party which has embraced the twin scourges of our society; unaccountable corporations and organized religion. i hate the republican party with a holy fervor.
we’re not just taking congress, we’re gonna eliminate some very nasty people. slick rick “man-on-dog” santorum will be history by about six o’clock pacific time. somewhat later in a closer race, senator deerhead macaca will be shown the door. i’m an honorary macaca today! shortly after that, conrad burns, who once vilified to their faces an exhausted firefighting crew who had come all the way from virginia to montana to fight a fire, will himself be extinguished.
there’s an intriguing possibility that the polls are all wrong, that they underestimated the scope and sweep of what’s about to happen. people lie to pollsters, and the direction they’re most likely to lie in is the direction of conformity with their neighbors. many voters will treat this as a referendum on the bush administration, and when they’re all alone in the booth with their consciences, they might reject en masse the worst president in our nation’s history and his policies of aggression, avarice and stupidity. you people might lose every single contested senate seat, even the ones thought to be absolutely safe. after the long pre-season, this is the game that counts, i’m settled in at the 50 yard line and as a true fan of america, i’m just stoked at the possibilities for what we can do today to turn it back toward the light.

  6. […] I wasn’t willing to predict the outcome of the election further than observing that I thought Allahpundit had the right idea when he said he’d be drinking to ease the pain. Indeed, the election looks to be shaping up as a disaster, although how big a disaster still remains to be seen. […]
