L.A. Times Endorses Arnold

In perhaps the surest sign of the political emasculation of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the L.A. Times has endorsed him for Governor.

Oh, well. He ain’t great, but he’s better than Angelides.

  1. Well, of all the low down dirty tricks the LA Times could pull, this takes the cake. They expect their endorsement of Arnold to have the same effect Osama’s endorsement of John Kerry had in the last election, the kiss of death.

    Arnold don’t need no stinkin’ LA Times endorsements.

  6. I suppose I could make all kinds of nasty remarks about a man who shaves himself all over and then has the nerve to call other men “girly-men” but I will take the high road and just speculate that the LAT is just looking for an advertising contract for “Nair for Men”.

    Now, Arnold used to do 20-rep set after 20-rep set of squats and then he used to make “love” with California girl after California girl. And that’s pretty manly to me.

  8. NK, even if Schwarzenegger’s manhood were in doubt, your point about “girly-man” would be not-taken. That phrase originated with S&L’s two-man Schwarzenegger parody, Hans und Franz, not with Schwarzenegger himself.

    Does even the Daily Dog Trainer want a stiff like Angelides as governor?

    One of the ongoing travesties of California state politics is that not very talented hacks like Lockyear, Garamendes and Cruz Bustamante get shuffled among statewide offices after they’re termed out. It’s not a pretty sight. Now Phil Angelides wants to run for governor. It may be just a leetle step too far insofar as Phil is concerned.

  19. nk, forget shaving, he did a photo layout wearing a speedo that was pretty obviously intended to titillate gays. But your point is still not-taken because the jibe was intended to be funny and over-the-top, not serious. It’s like calling someone a maroon; if you got snarky at that and said, “It’s ‘moron’, you idiot.” you just prove that you didn’t get the joke.

  20. A double bind means that if a person or group does x, then there is “proof” that they are wrong or evil. If they do not x, there is also “proof” that the person or group is wrong or evil.

    I suppose you would have patted the LAT on the back if they’d come out against Arny? That is, you would have criticized the LAT whether they supported him or didn’t support him. Both bases are covered.

  25. Patterico: I might vote for Arnold. As usual, i’m running late in making my decisions, and probably won’t make all of them until I go to vote.

    But i’m *not* voting for Angelides, and neither are most of my liberal-leaning friends and family; the man would be a disaster as governor. Arnold, while he hasn’t been what I want in a governor, has also not done a bad job, all things considered.

  26. The problem isn’t just that Arnie seems to be relying on Maria for advice. It’s also that one of his top advisors is an ally of Karl_Rove. And, he’s cozying up to far-left Aztlan partisans like Antonio_Villaraigosa and Fabian_Nunez. If you do some research into Arnie’s new buddies, looking at their past actions and statements, you’ll see that instead of working with them he should be trying to drive them from office.

    Arnie’s going to win, so a protest vote here or there isn’t going to do that much damage.

    And, BTW, I used to be a strong Arnie supporter as a search at my site will reveal. But, working with Karl_Rove’s buddy and collaborating with far-left racial_separatists goes just a bit too far.

  28. TLB: I’m not sure it’s reasonable to describe the current and former Speaker of the State Assembly as far-left. Unless you want to say that a majority of Democrats in the Assembly are far-left, which strikes me as depriving the term “far-left” of any comparative value whatsoever.

    These men, like it or not, represent the mainstream of the state Democratic party; and the state Democratic party, judging by election results, does a better job of representing the mainstream of the state than does the state Republican party.

  29. Psy, you’re discription of a double bind is reasonable but your application is faulty. It wasn’t the case that Patterico was going to criticize the Times no matter what. In fact, the Times endorsed Arnold and Patterico didn’t criticize them for it; he criticized Arnold for it. And it seems unlikely that he would have criticized Arnold if the Times had not endorsed him.
