A Brief Comment on the Greenwald Kerfuffle

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:54 pm

I haven’t had a chance to stay abreast of the latest developments on the Greenwald kerfuffle — and I can’t catch up now, because we’re on our way to the Hollywood Bowl. In all likelihood, I won’t have time to read the nearly 300 comments on the situation until tomorrow. Such is life.

The basic state of the evidence is this:

Greenwald (and nobody else) used one IP address to make five comments on my site on July 13. He (and nobody else) used the same one to make 2 comments on Villainous Company. “Ryan” used that IP address to post 3 comments at Riehl World View. And “Ellison” posted a comment using that IP address at Ace’s. And “Thomas Ellers” posted numerous comments using that IP address at Q&O.

Greenwald (and nobody else) used a second IP address to post 3 comments on my site on July 12. He used the same IP address to post as himself at Confederate Yankee. And that same IP address was used by “Wilson” at Jeff Goldstein’s site.

Greenwald’s defense makes things interesting. But there are at least two separate IP addresses that were shared by him and his sycophants. That makes it trickier for him to explain. And (other than denying that he engaged in sock-puppetry) he hasn’t really told us anything specific about how this could have happened, has he?

Still, as I said this morning, I am only setting forth the facts in my posts. And the facts are still developing. I make no claims in these posts; I let the facts speak for themselves.

And that’s all I have time for now. Mozart calls.

  1. Patterico,

GiGi stated on his blog today that he spends half his time in New York and half his time in Brazil. He could very well have a computer in each locale. It could be a stretch given that they were one day apart, but it is possible.

Also, almost everyone has daily access to two IP addresses: Their home, and their work. Plus you can visit internet cafes, or Kinkos, or friends’ houses. Two IP addresses is not a problem.

    Rick O'Shea (f41eca)

  2. Two IP addresses is a problem for his explanation that it is someone at his house using his computer. It now becomes someone else using his computer at 2 different locations. 😉

    Dwilkers (a1687a)

  3. Rick,

I re-worded the sentence to make my meaning clearer.

    Dwilkers understands.

    Patterico (50c3cd)

  4. Who’s GreenWaldo?

    Dan Collins (816a33)

  5. I condemn that comment by Dan Collins.

    Dwilkers (a1687a)

  6. Thanks for that, Dwilkers. Naturally, I cordially condemn any and all comments that you make, express or implied. Would you be so kind as to retroactively condemn the other comments I’ve posted on the internet? I’d be ever so obliged.

    Dan Collins (816a33)

  7. I condemn you all retroactively and proactively because I am confused. If I may paraphrase the above, GiGi used two separate and distinct IP addresses, and various alledged sock puppets also used both of those addresses, meaning Ms. GiGi would have had to follow hubby about during his workday, snatching the keyboard and coming to the valiant support of his miscreant lover?

    Rick O'Shea (f41eca)

  8. But of course!

I condemn any comment Dan Collins has made or even considered making at any time and on any site or that he may make in the future, for now and in perpetuity.

Further, I proactively condemn any comment made by his blood relatives, his dog or other small animals (including those generally considered livestock) or anyone that may be poaching on his WiFi connection, or any sock puppet he may deign to utilize. Moreover and generally speaking I condemn any comment made by persons that may know him or know of him, or even live near him (within say, 5 miles).

I even condemn any website that may allow his comments.

    Dwilkers (a1687a)

  9. Oh, yeah? Well I condemn both of your condemnations. In fact, I condemn everyone who’s ever thought about condemning someone else. And I condemn anyone who hasn’t condemned someone else.

What should be condemned is how ready some people are to condemn other people. Which means that I condemn myself. Which means that have to condemn myself for condemning myself. Uh oh…….

    CraigC (9cd021)

  10. Two IP addresses is a problem for his explanation that it is someone at his house using his computer. It now becomes someone else using his computer at 2 different locations.

Both of the IP’s are from the same provider in brazil.

  11. Dwilkers if you don’t sound like a constitutional lawyer I don’t know who does. Not that I don’t condemn you.

  12. [Said to self, with head bowed, eyes clenched shut, and forehead furrowed with concentration:] End the Glenn Greenwald posts, Patterico. End them. Yes, he’s a liar. Yes, he’s a putz. But he’s also not worth your time.

Life’s too short to be pissed off all the time. It’s just not worth it.

    Serenity now.

  15. You know, if you (or Ace) have a crush on Glenn, it’s OK to just say so. This whole cyber-spitball-dunking-ponytails-in-the-cyber-inkwell thing is very 7th grade, if you don’t mind my observing.

Anyway, Glenn seems to be taken. But you and Ace seem to have a lot in common, and you already have his phone number.

  18. Don’t look now, we’ve got another Frisch on our hands.

    Gotta Know (f41eca)

  19. Yes, of course. When your side gets caught with its hand in the cookie jar, if someone has the temerity to point it out, you try to cancel it by saying, “Hey, you’re obsessed.” Kind of the way the islamoturds can kill as many people as they want, but as soon as Israel strikes back, they want a cease-fire.

And of course, there’s the obligatory creepy, sub-rosa gay attack from the tolerant left, who claim to support all lifestyles, but, oddly, resort to gay-baiting when it suits their purpose.

    CraigC (9cd021)

  20. That was for #15.

It’s only “creepy” if you think there is something inherently “creepy” about being gay, which I don’t, but perhaps you do. I’m in favor of maximum openness about it, as my post attests.

You brought up the gay reference, if isn’t a “creepy” way to present it than why did you even inject it? What does sexuality have to do with any of this?

I’d really like to hear your reasoning.

    topsecretk9 (09a224)

  26. But anyone who in any way tried to defend or minimize Frisch’s filth is as filthy as she is.

I guess I missed the part where this had anything at all to do with Frisch. For the record, yes, she is a creepy wacko nutjob.

Are you being deliberately obtuse, or was that some kind of high school debating move?

Never did high school debating, either. I’m happy to leave it at that and let you get back to the more important work at hand of utterly discrediting Greenwald once and for all. Good luck!

  28. Yes, of course. When your side gets caught with its hand in the cookie jar, if someone has the temerity to point it out, you try to cancel it by saying, “Hey, you’re obsessed.”

Exactly. If you just take this one thing in isolation it’s just funny but not that important and would seem to be a waste of time. But Greenwald has been trying to orchestrate a character assassination campaign. This item is just one piece of many that help reveal what he’s about. I do think we’re getting to the point where we will have established what he is and should just dismiss him hereafter as a blogger unworthy of respect. Like the way some already respond to him with the simple, “Here’s another howler from the internet’s most dishonest blogger,” and a quick link back to the proof he’s a liar. But we’ve had to get into the minutiae to establish what he’s about so that we don’t have to do so again down the line. 🙂

  30. I think this all points out that Glenn Greenwald, and such other of his dopplegangers as may be wandering about his digs, are legends in their own (apparently collective) minds.

It occurs to me that the great support for Glenn and all his wonderous “accomplishments” may in fact just be the fantasies of Glenn and the legions of co-inhabitants in the space between his ears.

In any case, he truly is rather pathetic!

  32. Thank you Mr. P. This proves that Glen Greenwald is the rottenest bastard in the francosphere. He should be made to atone for his crimes. I say let’s call him a traitor, demand his execution, and plaster his address and photos of his home all over the internets. Then we can touch ourselves inappropriately while we watch the latest news from Israel and Lebanon.

While I enjoyed your post, I object to the last line. Glenn is not a ‘nobody’…He’s a a New York Times bestselling book on executive authority. Breaks a story on his blog about wiretapping that leads to front-page stories on most major newspapers in the country. Russ Feingold reads from his blog during the Censure hearings.

Great post, but for the last line. Rather than a ‘nobody’, Glenn only has a New York Times Best Selling Book on the Bush Administration and its abuses of power. And he has one of the most-read blogs on the Interent, after 9 months of blogging. And Senators read from his blog at Senate hearings and his posts lead to front-page news stories in major newspapers.

  40. “Choose a series of lying AP, NYT, or WaPo writers and go to town. Don’t just concentrate on one nobody that nobody’s ever heard of before.”

Vaery interesting post, save the last line. By ‘nobody, did you mean “has been on the N.Y. Times Best Seller List for 6 weeks now or more. He is a graduate of a top 5 law school and worked at the most prestigious law firm in the country. In 9 months, he’s managed to become one of the most cited and heavily-trafficked bloggers on the internets. His posts have led to front page news articles and are read by U.S. Senators during Senate hearings.”?????

  52. I make no claims in these posts…

    That is a flat-out, bald-faced lie.

Greenwald (and nobody else) used one IP address to make five comments on my site on July 13.

You have absolutely no proof of this, and you cannot garner proof of this from IP’s. You can subpeona his Brazilian ISP to get closer to the bottom of this, but even they can’t tell you who was clacking away at which keyboard. You have assumptions. Period. Educate yourself on the characteristics and purposes of IP addresses. Since you also can’t believe that anyone would agree with him on similar-sounding points, you may also wish to educate yourself on the support of friends.

This post also requires an explanation of how this discredits Greenwald’s blogging and political writings. Wait – it can’t, as it doesn’t even begin to reference his blogging or political writings. Talk about obfuscation and dishonesty. Your lack of ethics is beyond the pale.

  56. This post also requires an explanation of how this discredits Greenwald’s blogging and political writings.

Only from the most intellectually cramped and calcified regions of Modern Far Leftist Cant could the argument even be advanced, straightfaced, that demonstrable serial dishonesty might not “discredit” one’s “political writings.”

    Kent (005e8f)

  57. This post also requires an explanation of how this discredits Greenwald’s blogging and political writings.

Greenwald is a liar, and he lies in his writings, consistently. Lying, and getting caught, discredits him. This is just another brick in a wall that’s been under construction for a while now.

Of course, Patterico refrained from such things quite purposefully, favoring a very simple “here are the facts I have at hand” apporach over drawing conclusions. That is his prerogative. You want a post done your way, you write it. This post doesn’t “need” it, because most people not associated with the Townhall list don’t need to have the math done for them and the conclusion emailed to them.

  60. It’s not hard to explain the two different IP addresses.

No, its not, not from a narrowly technical point of view. Most of us saw it was possible for it to be something other than sock-puppetry from the start.

Hey its also possible he has multiple personality disorder and he doesn’t even know he’s been running around defending himself under assumeed names.

    Possible.

On the other hand it takes a special sort of denial to believe that’s the likely explanation for what happened here. You can see that as Sir Douche’s sycophants are now posting simple screeches about Patterico now, and about how it doesn’t matter, rather than saying they actually believe him – when they’re not posting fawning “Oh Glenn, you are so teh roxxorz and teh l33t3st, thank you for writing this!” over on his website where he’s blogged his martyrdom. See mantis above for an example.

If Greeny’s sycophants don’t care that Sir Douche is a lying that’s fine. The rest of us are going to spend a few days laughing at you as well as him.

You know what strikes me as funny? All his little junior douches should be ashamed and apologizing to him. Obviously if they’d done a minimally acceptable job as little junior Glenn parrots he wouldn’t have had to go around posting his CV and accomplishments everywhere under multiple assumed names. He must be furious with you all.

    Dwilkers (a1687a)

  68. The conclusion being leapt to here is that the IP address originated with Greenwald. Has he directly admitted this? How do you know it was him? It looks like your only proof is that at one point someone going through that IP called himself “Glenn Greenwald”. Someone who, by your suggestions, is a known liar. So why do you choose to believe it was “Glenn Greenwald”? You have no more proof of that than if it were someone named “Wilson” using a fake name at all of the other sites, or someone really name “Ellison”…well, I think you see the point. By choosing to believe a liar at one point, you’re kinda cherry-picking reality, aren’t you? I’d sooner believe none of them are Greenwald. A commenter calling himself “Glenn Greenwald” lies about his name on every other site he visits. Call me crazy, but if he’s a liar, he’s probably lying.

In conclusion, for your claims to hold water, you must first prove that Greenwald left comments to your site. They originated from Brazil, you say? Not only is Brazil is big country, but there are other explanations as well.

  70. And while we’re on the subject, it cracks me up how important GiGi finds himself for having spent several years months at Wachtell Lipton. What a crock. I’m not from the legal world, I work in finance. The uncontested absolute pinnacle of the heap of financial firms is Goldman, Sachs. If you are hired by Goldman, congratulations, it’s very difficult to do. Do you know what you get if you work at Goldman and leave, for whatever reason, months out of the training program? Raised eyebrows. It’s better to not have been there at all.

  76. It’s irony to those who claim him to be a consistent liar. It wouldn’t be irony to those who don’t.

Here’s irony: Believing a faceless, voiceless, anonymous, frequently pseodonymous liar is Green Greenwald. And why do you believe it? Because that’s who he said he was.

I’ll help you find it: The belief on your part is ironic because you’re choosing to believe a commenter already denounced as a liar. Denounced by yourselves, no less. The situation itself doesn’t fit the true definition of irony – stupidity and gullibility, yes.

We already know you guys can’t tell when you’re being played.

I can. Greenwald denies having posted the entries, and we all know Glenn Greenwald wouldn’t lie. Right?

In other words, since we deem Gleen Greenwald to be a liar, we shouldn’t believe Gleen Greenwald when he says he’s Glenn Greenwald.

Logic obviously isn’t your strong suit.

In his own site, Glenn Greenwald says that he’s posted defenses of himself under his own name. So, either he actually do that, in which case he’s a sockpuppeteer and a liar, or else he didn’t do that, in which case he’s a liar. Are we clear? He’s a liar either way. Good.

  94. Why do you people keep calling Glenn Greenwald “Gigi?”

    kc (5aa42a)

  95. kc,

They refer to Greenwald as GiGi because it’s a homophobic smear.

Patterico got busted by the plain fact that Greenwald, like many of us, post through a server or router.

These are new pieces of technolgy of which many righties are apparently unaware.

    Macswain (76d8da)

  96. GiGi is a homophobic smear? Who knew? I just thought it was tedious to keep writing “Glenn Greenwald” over and over again.

Macswain, lookit: the “router” explanation is only tenable if you find Greenwald’s denial credible. Given his documented serial mendacity in other areas, why should anyone extend him any benefit-of-the-doubt?

Furthermore, even if the “router” explanation is true, how does it reflect particularly well on him? It means he’s shacked up with a psycho who’s stalking his blog critics on the internet under multiple pseudonyms, but Greenwald’s too much of a dope to realize it despite the facts that (a) Greenwald was provably, contemporaneously, reading and/or commenting in the very same blog comment sections, and (b) at least one of the psycho’s posts quoted directly from email sent him by Greenwald.

So either Greenwald’s a liar, or he’s a fool. Pick one.

Wrong, boyo. It’s an intentional diminutive/infantilization of the left’s latest plaster saint.

  99. Patterico got busted by the plain fact that Greenwald, like many of us, post through a server or router.

What are you talking about? I’m still waiting for a response on another thread by a leftie who made some claim about nobody here understands IP’s. As far as I know anything posted on the internet goes through a router. Without routers there is no internet. So your post on its face is meaningless.

    Gerald A (fe1f90)

  100. Gerald, what he’s attempting to say is that many of us connect to the Internet via some kind of DHCP server, typically a home network firewall/router, acting as a gateway.

In other words, you likely have a piece of hardware that plugs into the wall, and that you plug the rest of your home network into. This device negotiates with your ISP for a single wide-area network (WAN) IP address. Any traffic originating from YOUR side of that device will appear, to the outside world, as if it comes from that one WAN IP, no matter which particular computer or user in your household was responsible for it.

As a practical matter this means that it’s impossible to tell whether Greenwald’s denials are lies. It’s entirely possible his partner is running around the ‘net lambasting Greenwald’s critics, and that Greenwald’s too stupid to realize it. What Macswain doesn’t tell us is whether this alternative explanation is particularly plausible, or why it would reflects well on Greenwald.

    BC (bf871b)

  101. BC,

You admit the router/server explanation could be credible but for Greenwald’s “serial mendacity.” I imagine I can now discount eveything written by all the rightwing bloggers I disagree. What a convenient standard.

You then jump to factual conclusions for which you have no basis … any person who posts through the same IP address as Greenwald is somebody he is “shacked up eith” and that an IP address is limited to at most 2 people (i.e. your multiple personality reference).

Maybe you should step back and question why you are willing to make so many factual leaps to attack Greenwald.

Pablo’s comment, of course, isn’t serious given his comments elsewhere.

Rick … see Pablo if you truly don’t believe the GiGi nick is homophobic.

Gerald … I thought I was just joking about righties not understanding how multiple people post from the same IP address. Your comment sufggests I was being too charitable in considering it a joke.

    Macswain (76d8da)

  102. So all he meant was there could be two different computers on his home network. But that does nothing to explain the two different IP’s as this thread has pointed out plus the plausibility issue as you say. I should know not to take his post seriously based on the GiGi claim alone.

    Gerald A (bdfba2)

  103. You admit the router/server explanation could be credible but for Greenwald’s “serial mendacity.”

He said no such thing. He said it was not impossible to disprove. He finds Greenwald’s explanation highly implausible as any normal person does. You seem to have low reading comprehension.

    Gerald A (bdfba2)

  104. I mean not possible to disprove.

    Gerald A (bdfba2)

  105. Pablo’s comment, of course, isn’t serious given his comments elsewhere.

Oh, so you can read my mind, eh? Oh, and links please. I decide when I’m serious, ya fuckin’ muttonhead. Now get on your knees, bitch! (Notice my lack of fear, aka phobia)

Rick … see Pablo if you truly don’t believe the GiGi nick is homophobic.

Indeed. scroll right up to my 11:13 post. It will confirm your suspicions, Rick.

    Pablo (efa871)

  106. Rick … see Pablo if you truly don’t believe the GiGi nick is homophobic.

Mocking, or even mocking, dismissive contempt, is far from a sign indication of “phobia.” Homo- or otherwise.

See a dictionary is you truly don’t believe that.

But otherwise, you’re spot on about wingnuts like me: my hate keeps me warm year ’round.

    Cordially…

    Rick (048868)

  107. Pablo,

Oh, the irony: we’re starting to seem like sock puppets ourselves.

So tell me, you big, handsome, scary-smart man: how *do* you keep winning EVERY argument with moonbats, with your relentless logic and fluid writing style? So much that they flee in terror, and find peripheral issues with which to smear you?

Now go on;don’t be shy–tell about the times Dutch, Poppy & Dubya each quoted you in a State of the Union Address.

    Cordially…

    Rick (048868)

  108. Macswain,

You admit the router/server explanation could be credible but for Greenwald’s “serial mendacity.” I imagine I can now discount eveything written by all the rightwing bloggers I disagree. What a convenient standard.

Actually, I admit the router explanation is a possibility. Another possibility is that Greenwald is lying out his ass when he’s denying allegations of sockpuppetry.

Given that Greenwald has, in the past, lied out his ass about unrelated matters, I’m simply not inclined to discount the “Greenwald was sockpuppetting, got caught, and is now lying out his ass about it” hypothesis as quickly as, say, Tim Lambert. It seems to me that it’s at least as plausible as the “some third party is defending Greenwald from behind a router that makes it appear that their IPs are identical, without Greenwald’s knowledge” hypothesis that seems to be in vogue among Greenwald sycophants such as yourself.

You then jump to factual conclusions for which you have no basis

    Do tell.

any person who posts through the same IP address as Greenwald is somebody he is “shacked up eith”

Now you’re just being exceptionally stupid.

If Greenwald were posting from behind some sort of ISP-level, regional, townwide, or even local gateway that made his IP address appear identical to that of countless multitudes, not only would there be some indication of it, but Greenwald could just say so. Instead, he’s for all intents and purposes admitted that the postings originated in his household. In other words, to suggest that that some sort of wacky network topology is the culprit behind this controversy is to enjoy the volcanic technicolor Kool-Aid enema. If we accept his denial it means he’s running a home LAN which routes through a cable or DSL modem, and so we’re seeing the gateway’s WAN IP from anybody who posts behind it.

So who could that person be? Well, we know that Greenwald lives in Brazil with his partner. If you’re in possession of some additional facts which suggest that Greenwald has some other housemate or housemates who are similarly motivated to stalk his blog-critics, or that the Mentos kids have invaded Greenwald’s domicile the way they did poor Ned Lamont’s, then by all means present them, and I’ll modify my hypothesis accordingly. Otherwise, I’ll await your apology for accusing me, in so many words, of making shit up.

and that an IP address is limited to at most 2 people (i.e. your multiple personality reference).

Huh? I never made any reference to multiple personalities. Nor did I ever suggest that a single IP address is limited to at most two people. Feel free to apologize for putting words in my mouth, too.

    BC (6f05b6)

  109. Oh, the irony: we’re starting to seem like sock puppets ourselves.

I just bring the facts, Rick. I also like to season with teh funny. And did I mention that I wrote the “Tear down this wall” speech? Yep, pretty much ended Communism in Europe all by myself.

What’s your secret, you rhetorical pile driver, you? Whatever it is, I’m sure you’re a higly accomplished moonbat crusher. I can tell by your mad skillz!
