New Elizabeth Lowell Book Out Today

Today marks the release of The Wrong Hostage, a new novel by best-selling author Elizabeth Lowell.

Interesting fact about Elizabeth Lowell: it is the pen name of the wife of one Evan Maxwell — a name you may recognize from his fascinating guest posts on this site. Evan collaborates with his wife on many novels, including this one. He primarily provides research and background, and — despite his evident writing ability, as evidenced by his excellent posts here — his wife shoulders the primary writing duties for the novels.

I used my influence with Evan to muscle my way into a free advance copy of The Wrong Hostage. Understand that Lowell is considered a writer of romantic fiction, and that (sometimes) comes across in the novel. But I enjoyed this book quite a bit, despite the “romantic fiction” label. The main reason is that the book offers a fascinating perspective into the life of the Mexican border. Also, the hero of the book, Joe Faroe, is a very interesting character.

I stayed up late a couple of nights running to finish the book, and that’s high praise. Check it out.

I hope Evan will add his two cents as well.

  1. Wow. I knew Elizabeth Lowell was a pen name for Ann Maxwell, and and that she occasionally wrote with her husband, but I never put the two together.

Elizabeth Lowell has been a favorite author of mine for years. Yes, she is definitely a genre writer, but her books are well researched, and she doesn’t do one dimensional characterizations.

I’ve been lazy and haven’t checked out the rest of her work. Now I will.

  2. At this moment, I am in Internet limbo, somewhere between Northern Arizona and the San Juan Islands of Washington but I will take Patterico up on his invitation as soon as I find a stable connection because The Wrong Hostage is close to both Ann’s heart and mine and it is both a good read and pertinent to a regular issue here, the Border.

Without tipping my hand completely, I will say that we have come to believe, the two of us, that the Border isn’t a line in the sand; it is a construct. In reality, The Border is about a hundred miles wide, fifty on each side of the actual boundary. That’s for better and for worse and we will try to make our case for the idea over the next week or so.

  3. Holy COW!!

I’ve read and enjoyed Elizabeth Lowell’s books for years, even to the point of tracking down several titles written as Ann Maxwell (“Fire Dancer,” anyone?)

Wow. Just… WOW!!! Well, now I’ll have an additional reason for devouring her books with immense pleasure. I can even pretend that I “know” one of my favorite authors, LOL

Don’t worry, Evan, I promise: no stalking – except of her books, which I think y’all would appreciate 😉
