Don’t miss Jack Dunphy’s latest, on the obstacles LAPD officers face for doing their jobs well.

  1. I suppose I should have thought of this but it sounds like supervisors in the police department are just like supervisors everywhere. The skills that get someone promoted to supervising often (usually) have little to do with the job itself and more to do with paper pushing. Back in the days when I was a young doc we were all aware of nurses who were “encouraged” to become supervisors to try to get them away from the bedside before they killed somebody. My wife is trying to run an operating room right now with such a supervisor. Of course, the supervisor is a “minority.”

  2. what a load of crapola. the author apparently desires no oversight of police officers whatsoever, but he cites no specific instances other than the high speed chase/gun clubbing episode, and he cited the ripatti shooting, which had nothing whatsoever to do with police discipline, just because it was there i guess, an irrelevant tug on the heartstrings of benighted statist fools. when you turn them loose with no oversight, you get consequences like the rampart division scandal and a hundred million dollars in municipal liability.

  3. TO ADA,

I suggest you read the piece more carefully. He does not suggest “no oversight of police officers whatsover.”
