Sock Puppets and the L.A. Times

This is fun: if you do a Technorati search for the term “Patterico,”, the results page contains sponsored links for sock puppets — and for a subscription to the L.A. Times.

Here’s a screenshot in case this changes (thanks to Allah for converting it from a bitmap file)

  1. Well, this happy coincidence suggests a plan: sign up for a subscription to the LAT and get a free sock puppet delivered to your door, no shipping charges.

  4. But oddly, “Hiltzig” doesn’t. Then again Hiltzig isn’t tied to any ads. Is that good or bad?

    Is there a difference?

  8. Patrick:

There’s another LA Times reporter who’s made plenty of web log posts under phony names. Former columnist named [name deleted, since the allegation is completely unsupported and therefore potentially libelous. — P]. I say you add another scalp to your collection and go after this guy too. As a prosecutor, I know you’re concerned about even-handed enforcement. Go get ’em!

  9. I’m guessing all sock puppets are in the wash and nowhere near a keyboard! At least in the last couple weeks.

  10. Looks like you’ve been Technorati-bombed! I’ve heard of Google-bombs, but this is new. I had a liberal friend email about the Google bomb concerning George W., like it was the most amazing thing in the world…although, with his idiotic push for amnesty, I’m beginning to agree with the whole “failure” thing.

I’d say you should take this as a compliment! You got somebody’s back up enough to plant a search-engine bomb. Hey – anything that gets moonbats off the street is a good thing.

As an attorney, I’m sure you’re aware that the truth is an absolute defense to a libel charge. See: http://atrios.blogspot.com/2004_03_21_atrios_archive.html

[You offer at least a *shred* of evidence, unlike the person who was banned. But it’s a shred only. Someone was defending Rivenburg on Atrios’s site, and Atrios claims the posts came from an LAT server. That doesn’t prove it was Rivenburg. Analogously, someone named Masha aka workingjournalist defended Hiltzik from an LAT computer. That doesn’t mean it was Hiltzik. If that’s all that the “Hate the Media Bias” guy (who is, I suspect, the ubiquitous Michel Thomas lunatic), it ain’t much. — P]

  12. […] P.S. I once noticed that when I stuck the term “Patterico” into Technorati I got sponsored links for sock puppets — and for a subscription to the L.A. Times. I wonder how long it’s going to be before a Technorati search for “Glenn Greenwald” contains sponsored links for douches. […]
