Hiltzik Suspension in the Media

The AP has reported on Michael Hiltzik’s suspension and the end of his column. The AP story seems to be confused about columns and blogs, twice saying that I made accusations against Hiltzik in a “column” (really my blog) and saying that Hiltzik’s “blog” (really his column) appeared most Mondays and Thursdays.

The story also appears in Editor and Publisher, which quotes the L.A. Times Editors’ Note with little commentary.

UPDATE: An edited version of the AP story appears in tomorrow’s New York Times. I love this bit:

Mr. Hiltzik had been in a blog feud with Patrick Frey, the Los Angeles County deputy district attorney, who writes the conservative blog Patterico’s Pontifications.

That word I bolded, “the,” was evidently added to the AP story by New York Times editors. (I base this on a comparison of the AP story linked above with the NYT version.) Which makes me chuckle, because the sentence made sense the way the AP wrote it, but is highly confusing as it appears in the “Paper of Record.”

Either the New York Times thinks there’s only one Deputy District Attorney in Los Angeles County (try 900+), or there is an extra comma in there somewhere. Either way, they should have left the sentence alone.

Ah, the things I could have told these people — if any of them had ever bothered to call me.

UPDATE x2: The Washington Post is also running the AP story — but without the goofy editing.

  1. Well….nobody ever claimed the AP knows whaty they are talking about either.

  2. May I, respectfully, ask what, if anyhting, made you think they would get the story right?

  3. people writing…and editing…for Associated Press dont know the difference between a blog and a column, or dont bother to inform themselves which is which when writing about it…

    sheesh.

  4. Quick, someone nominate the AP for a Pulitzer, and don’t forget, the first MSM publication to actually print the words “sock puppet” gets a free toaster oven, an additional special prize will be awarded for providing an accurate definition of a sock puppet, but only if it appears in the same article.

  5. I now see the quote from Patterico in the AP article, linked above, where “sock puppetry” is mentioned. I read the AP article on another site before commenting here and didn’t see the reference. It’s there now. Either I missed it, or it was recently added. In any case, the toaster oven goes to the AP with my apologies and my compliments.

The special prize is, I believe, still available, although I’m not quiet as sure as before.

  6. When I clicked on the link for the AP story, it was listed under a heading “Breaking News,” and dated Sunday, April 30.

    Some breaking news!

  8. I saw this news of the suspension on the CNN crawl, it’s on drudge, it’s all over.

  9. “Hiltzik did not commit any ethical violations in his newspaper column … But employing pseudonyms constitutes deception and violates a central tenet of The Times’ ethics guidelines …”

I think I get it. Violating central tenets of the Times’ ethics guidelines is not an ethical violation.

This is extraordinary news for anyone accused of being unethical. Simply claim you violated a “central tenet”. It gets you off.

  10. Guess the AP only got two letters out of the soup, ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN each got three. Is that why their accuracy on the ‘news’ is less than 1%? I’ve been a news hound for years and now i find that you can’t trust anything you read or hear from the antique MSM outlets. I now buy a paper maybe once in a two week period and never listen to the national hype on any of the left wing stations. Haven’t missed a thing, just like the CD/DVD’s i stopped buying in 2004, it was a waste of money and time. Soon most movies will be computer generated/animated and the Holy-wood wonks will be in the welfare line.

  11. Ten years ago, the AP story would have been the “news.” They were no better then but there was no blog world to call them on it. The LA Times is bleeding; the NY Times is bleeding; the message has not reached the dinosaur’s brain.

  12. Mention that I liked Mr. Carroll’s speech that you quote.

Then I realized that he had broken all his mirrors. Souned like a good indictment of a lot of today’s media types.

  19. Okay, Mr. Nitrini. You’re amusing and everything, but you said something libelous above, and I had to edit it. That kind of ended the amusement. I’m sorry, but you aren’t welcome to comment here any more.

  20. The NYT, the Paper of Record?

    Please…

I use 2 words with caps, but I’ve seen variations: lower case letters, and all-one-word.

  23. Patterico,

Was the libel thing with Mr. Nitrini about me?
