I’m Back

I know: it may have seemed like I never left, since I checked in from time to time while on vacation — long enough to get criticized as a “propagandist” by L.A. Times columnist Michael Hiltzik.

My full response to him is almost done, but I plan to put the finishing touches on it tonight.

Thanks to the guest bloggers for filling in. It appears Allah was too busy with mysterious workings to contribute; we may be hearing more about that in coming days.

I will have some pictures of the trip (we went to Yosemite and Napa) in the next couple of days. In the meantime, I’ll put up the quote quiz that I was saving for tomorrow.

Look for the Hiltzik response tomorrow morning.

One Response to “I’m Back”

  1. Patterico:

Last time Sachi and I were in Yosemite, I saw a bear butt!

The highlight of our vacation was a three-day horsepacking trip through Yosemite and the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Boy, was that fun!

We also spent five days hiking around Tuolumne Meadows. That wasn’t as fun, because we had to carry all the food (and toothpaste, etc.) in a bear cannister… and it was heavy! Guess who got to carry that one.

We decided to go as ultra-lite as we could; the only food we brought was rice, instant oatmeal, and buffalo jerky.

I’ve never gotten so sick of any particular food in my life: we could live off of it (you call that living?), but that’s about all we can say. Next time, it’s back to freeze-dried Mandarin Shrimp and Beef Stroganoff!

It was a lot of fun; but I have to admit I enjoyed our Grand Canyon trip more (except the horsecamping trip in Yosemite was better than the single-day mule ride down to the South Kaibab Plateau.)

In the Grand Canyon, we hiked all the way down to the river, almost died of dehydration on the Clear Creek Trail (all right, a slight exaggeration), and hiked back out again… with packs that were way too heavy (thus prompting our decision to go almost ultra-lite in Yosemite).

You will, of course, post a detailed travelogue… right, P.? And see if you can get Patterica to write some of it, too — Sachi and I both love reading about people’s vacation trips!
