Dr. Sanity catches a telling quote in a discussion of female circumcision genital mutilation.

  1. The Afghani man who converted to Christianity is not what the Islamic prohibition (under threat of death) for apostasy is really about. It’s really about keeping the women in, cuz w/out it, the religion would become an almost-all-boys’ club within just a few short generations.

  2. The esteemed theologian/legal scholar/whatever sure comes across in that transcript as a grade A creep. Yeah, he doesn’t have to worry about female genital mutilation; we get it.

That said, the one-liner that comprises the headline of this post doesn’t sound right to me. Of course, I don’t speak Arabic… but I am suspicious that the translation isn’t quite kosher (heh), or can be seen to be addressing a different point in the context of the entire program.

Just a guess… time will probably tell.

  3. Where’s actus when you need him? Dr. Sanity and her commenters go on at length about Islamic sexuality (I practically had to take a cold shower). But I have only heard of this in a Northeastern Africa context. Egypt and the Kikuyus of Kenya. It seems to be some kind of primitive tribal thing that has corrupted Islam in that part of the world. It does not seem to me to be the practice of most Islam, most Arabs or most Africans.

  4. The practice of FGM is appears in places outside of NE Africa. “An estimated 135 million of the world’s girls and women have undergone genital mutilation, and two million girls a year are at risk of mutilation – approximately 6,000 per day. […] reported among Muslim populations in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Malaysia… Egypt, Oman, Yemen and the United Arab Emirates.” (Amnesty international) FGM is not, as I understand it, an orthodox Muslim practice but is widespread.

  5. Thank you, M.H.

So it looks like it’s the other way around from what I suggested, after all. A cultish practice that flourishes in some Muslim sects. Not a N.E. African tribal custom. I stand corrected.
