Oscars

Captain Ed says:

I will be continuing the CQ tradition of live-blogging the Academy Awards tonight . . .

As for me, I will be continuing the longstanding Patterico tradition of ignoring them.

  1. Alas, the two daughters I had thought I was rearing properly, are firmly planted in front of the television, watching the E! network’s red carpet show. This includes the daughter who wants to major in physics at MIT (where she has not yet been accepted), and who watched the Hitler History and Science and Discovery Channels.

I thought that I was doing so well; where have I failed? 🙁

  2. My wife and daughter, too. It’s a biological thing among girls. Perfectly natural and nothing to worry about.

  3. I’ve never watched them in my life and I’m not gonna start tonight. I’d rather eat fire ants.

  4. Entertainment is a broad word,it could be anything from watching paint dry to digging a ditch.I prefer not to waste my time watching people who think they are in the In crowd but actually in the Out crowd-portray themselves as better-than-you-could-ever-be.But then again,it is entertainment.

Most of the time, since I love movies, I watch the Oscars..and certainly my daughters do, too.

However, this is its one big yawn. None of us are watching.

When the five nominated “best” pics combined gross doesn’t equal that of Narnia you realize just how out-of-touch Hollywood is with its audience.

  6. The wife went to an Oscar party with her girlfiends and I really, really wanted to go. But those raingutters don’t rake the leaves out themselves. Maybe next year.

[I love the term “girlfiends.” I assume it was inadvertent, but I still love it.

So we’d invite you over once we get home — but I assume you’re having to take care of the kid, right? — Patterico]

  7. Hmm, somehow, my X chromosomes must have missed the Oscar gene. My husband usually watches, though, but even he isn’t watching this year. We haven’t seen any of the pictures nominated for best pic, so it really seems like a waste of time (more than usual).

  8. My wife and daughter are also glued to the TV tonight. I noticed that it was very easy to get onto the golf course for a late afternoon round today. So there must be more than a few guys watching.

Ann Coulter has been an embarrassment to the right of late. But she is spot on about the Oscars. In case you haven’t seen it:

  9. CRASH!

    Wow.

    Great choice.

[Ugh. What a contrived piece of crap *that* was. — Patterico]

  10. I don’t think I’ve been back since Marlon Brando trotted out Pocohantas.

  11. Oliver Willis, the DC area liberal blogger, is thoroughly infatuated with Jessica Alba. When I walked downstairs for a Mountain Dew™ yesterday evening, the lovely Miss Alba was on the red carpet, looking pretty good. I went back upstairs, and was going to put a snarky comment on Mr Willis’ website — and it was unavailable.

Surely there must be some connection!

  12. I know just what you folks are talkin’ ’bout. I go through the same thing every time I go to a ballgame and have to endure one of those bombastic military displays. Only difference is that you can choose not to buy a movie ticket whereas I actually have to pay for all that marching and flyover excreta.

  13. Interesting observation – the headlines about poor TV ratings for the Oscars say “Ratings Crash for ABC broadcast of Oscars” leading the uninformed reader to think the winning movie had something to do with the poor Nielsens. Nothing about the fact that the emcee was “boring” and the front-running film Brokeback Mountain was controversial and uneasy for many.

  14. #13 … I go through the same thing every time I go to a ballgame and have to endure one of those bombastic military displays…

By bombastic military displays I assume Asinistra means displaying the flag and singing the national anthem?

    Dearest Asinistra:

And may we express our heartfelt congratulations to the Republicans in Congress for taxing away the money of liberals to spend on bombastic military displays, jet flyovers of ballparks and, especially, the war in Iraq! 🙂

Hello? Did you miss the part where it is now a good thing to be “out of touch”? I’d say you’re out of touch with what it means to be “out of touch.” Wait, but that would mean that you actually are IN touch with how out of touch those who think they are out of tou…*head explodes*

  17. I’ve seen three of the five BP nominees and Narnia, and a bunch of other movies; I thought two of the three BP movies were better than Narnia, and one of them was a waste of celluloid.

  18. Aphrael:

Out of curiosity, which two did you like and which one was “a waste of celluloid”?

    JVW (54c318)

  19. JVW: aha! someone bit! 🙂

I liked Crash. I loved BBM. I thought Good Night & Good Luck was a waste of celluloid.

    aphrael (e0cdc9)

  20. In addition, i’ve deliberately avoided Munich because, well, it’s been years since Mr. Spielberg made a movie I liked, so absent a compelling reason (eg, lots of people I trust saying “this is the best thing since sliced bread”), I can’t come up with a good reason to waste my money on it.

Capote is on the list for video release, probably.

  21. Ann Coulters new article on the Oscars is out. She said, “On behalf of red state America, let me be the first to say: “Screw you, Hollywood.”

Then, she went on to quote Jon Stewart, “I have to say it is a little shocking to see all these big names here, these huge stars. The Oscars is really, I guess, the one night of the year where you can see all your favorite stars without having to donate any money to the Democratic Party.”

But, her best line might be, “This may have been the most American Oscars yet, if America consisted of beautiful airheads in $50,000 dresses. And that was just the guys in “Brokeback Mountain.”

  22. “Brokeback Mountain” won the Oscar for best Original Score.
