Does the Tribune Company Care About the Opinions of L.A. Times Readers?

Filed under: Dog Trainer — Patterico @ 10:32 pm

Check out this comment by a fellow who calls himself “Biff”:

Patrick Frey? a deputy district attorney? commenting on the LA Times? and people care what you think because….????

Well, Biff, I can’t answer your question specifically.

But I have an idea who can. Ask the readers of this site. Ask the 16,000+ people who visited January 1 alone. Ask Glenn Reynolds, Michelle Malkin, Ed Morrissey, Scott Johnson, Charles Johnson, Hugh Hewitt, Dean Esmay, Jeff Goldstein, Cathy Seipp, Kevin Roderick, and many others why they linked my Year in Review post.

Then ask them if they care what you think.

Strange thing is, Biff: they actually might. They might be curious to know why you are so dismissive of a reader’s criticisms. After all, your IP address comes back to the Tribune Company in Chicago — the folks who publish the L.A. Times.

  1. Biff,

As one who cares, I’ll answer for myself: cuz I judge the man by his words, not the other way around. Patrick has earned my respect.

  2. Oooh! I guess that Biff didn’t know that WordPress sends the IP address of comments back to the site on which the comment is posted. 🙂

  3. OK, now that’s just damn funny.

Tough luck Biff, you can’t even get away with drive-by flipping the bird at someone anymore. Sucks, don’t it?

  4. “and people care what you think because….????”

I’ve got a good idea Biff can answer his own question about now, or if not quite yet, he’s rather likely to discover the necessary information pretty soon.

  5. Everybody should be nice to Biff, at least for a little while. If you look carefully at the thread where he posted his comment, you will notice that it originated in March 2005. Either he is such an online novice that he does not comprehend the fact that almost no one would ever see his “witty” remark, or his mind is so slow that it took over nine months to come up with his retort. (Please remember that it’s not nice to pick on the mentally handicapped. That’s about the extent of my political correctness.)

It seems like newspapers (and most of the rest of the media) have failed to grasp their own hypocrisy. They claim to be objective, but all too often the writers start with a premise and find examples to support that premise. (These “journalists” probably used the same shoddy researching techniques in their college term papers.) This results in editorializing on the front page. They fail to realize that the alternative news sources feed a large market sector who want either an alternative view or a balanced view. For some reason television news shows feel that having a couple of talking heads yelling at each other equals balance, but that just doesn’t cut it for me.

I seldom watch television news or read newspapers anymore. I scan the web for news, jumping from one website to another to try to get a feel for the pieces that were left out of the stories. Besides, my wife gets tired of me cursing at the television or at the newspaper.

I’m not sure what role newspapers will have in the future. Radio hurt the papers, television took another large chuck out of them, and cable decimated the survivors. Newspapers probably will survive as the slow, lumbering investigators, trying to find the next “big story”. I hope whomever writes for the papers finally manage to grasp the concepts of research and objectivity.

  6. Priceless! You reckon will we hear more from Biff?

  7. Poor B1FF. He doesn’t even remember how to spell his name anymore.

  9. Is somebody mistreating you Patterico? I’ve sure had my share of abuse lately by commenting on another site. I think I stick to the more mature sites, like this one, where most of the comments are not written by people with a mental age of 14. 🙂

Well, that would certainly explain why he’s here and not on one of the liberal sites! 🙂

  11. Psyberian,

I’ve heard about such sites, but haven’t found any yet, of course, I’m not expending much effort either. Can you provide directions? Thanks.

It’s a lot easier to locate Moonbat caves, they’re terriably smelly, and not only do Moonbats come out under cover of darkness, but they also insist on leaving their droppings where they aren’t wanted.

  12. High five Patrick! You’re really getting under their skin.

The arrogance is stunning. Especially in view of the fact that consumer products corporations spend hundreds of millions of dollars annually getting feedback from their customers. They treat every cutomer with the utmost care and respect. Even if the customer doesn’t reciprocate.

You would think the Tribune would instill this value in its employees. Apparently not.

    Chris A (9fdf88)

  13. Well, that would certainly explain why he’s here and not on one of the liberal sites.

Dana, I’m here because I don’t like echo chambers. Yes, I might just learn something here. If you go to some moderately liberal blogs, you might learn something too. Have you heard of Abramoff, for example? It’s understandable, but you won’t hear much about him on conservative blogs.

Black Jack, there are plenty of them around, you just have to look for yourself.

    Psyberian (1cf529)

  14. Ah, I almost feel sorry for the hapless Biff.

  15. If you look carefully at the thread where he posted his comment, you will notice that it originated in March 2005.

Which leads me to question the provenance of the comment.

Why would anyone leave a turd on the doorstep of a year-old thread with any expectation it would be noticed?

    It’s wildly improbable.

[Or it might be if I didn’t have a “Recent Comments” feature that allows anyone to see a recently made comment, no matter how old the thread. — Patterico]

  16. “It’s wildly improbable.”

Yes, it seems so, unless you take a second look. Patterico provides the obvious answer above. Also, the Post where the comment appeared was dated 4/30/05, and is a featured element in Patterico’s Dog Trainer Year in Review 2005.

Which is not only quite current, but is also getting such widespread circulation to such high praise, that it certainly should come to the attention of US media professionals. Especially those at the LAT, and perhaps even those as far away as the Chicago Tribune, NY Times, and the WaPo.

The ’05 Review is a detailed and explicit indictment of MSM for overt anti-American bias complete with a persuasive narrative and is fully documented with links to sources.

It’s not improbable at all that Biff, if he’s a media professional, might object to Patterico rubbing MSM’s nose in the mess they not only manufactured, but also now want desperately to evade having to take responsibility for their perfidy.

Biff didn’t like the message, so he attacked the messenger. Nothing new here. Move along.

  17. “Have you heard of Abramoff, for example? It’s understandable, but you won’t hear much about him on conservative blogs.”

About half the right-leaning blogs I frequent have at least one open thread on the subject.

It’s understandable, though, that you’d make such an unflattering assumption of us. Your side defines itself by that unflattering assumption, after all.

  18. Patterico is a Deputy D.A.? Oh, well, we all have to sow our wild oats before we settle down.

  19. Tribune Publishing company … as stupid

as the LA Times (which they publish) is lame. “Biff” writes an insulting, dismissive comment of PattericoPatrick Frey? a deputy district attorney? commenting on the LA Times? and people care what you think because….???? and lo and behold, Patterico…

Hi Bostonian, you haven’t commented much in a while.

I didn’t imply that right-leaning blogs were the only ones guilty of ignoring bad news for their party, so I think you are being presumptuous. I readily admit that the left blogs are guilty of it too and it is understandable since – what can you say if you are a blogger in those situations?

    Psyberian (1cf529)

  23. Biff didn’t think that anyone would really care what our esteemed host wrote. It seems like the Tribune Company certainly does care, given their efforts to discredit Mr Frey’s article.

Patterico, the Tribune Company has paid you their ultimate compliment: they have taken you seriously as a threat.

    Dana (3e4784)

  24. What’s there really to say about Abramoff, though? He’s going down? Duh, he pled guilty. He’s going to take a bunch of people, mostly Republican but also potentially including Democrats like Harry Reid, down with him? Yeah, that’s pretty well assumed. He’s a dirtball? Yeah, duh.

Remember, too, that conservative blogs see themselves as the counterweight to the media. Where, as here, the media is swarming all over a story, why bother throwing in your two cents? I don’t see Patterico blogging about the West Virginia miners either, for example.

Besides, here’s my prediction: Abramoff screws the people he implicates, and it dies there. I don’t think that this has any more electoral legs than Duke Cunningham or that gay hooker White House correspondent.

    Angry Clam (fa7fff)

  25. I agree Clam. In the past, I think I’ve been guilty of complaining here about that type of thing – until I noticed that the left-leaning blogs do that too.

But Harry Reid’s going down? Ded gum-it!.

    Psyberian (1cf529)

  26. The technical illiteracy of those at newspapers today is demonstrated by Biff’s missive. He needs to learn about “metadata” and IP addresses.

These folks are whistling in the dark.

  27. […] Patterico wrote a lengthy year end essay concerning the liberal bias of The Los Angeles Times, an essay that provoked more than one person (here and here) from the Times’ parent company (people who never seemed to comment previously on the Patterico website) into commenting in defense of the Times.
