Can You Remember Back That Far?

Filed under: Judiciary — Patterico @ 6:12 am

Hugh Hewitt says:

The modern, large law firm is such a very different beast than it was when the last big firm partner joined the court –a date and name for which I can’t even figure out.

Quiz: who was the last Justice who had been a partner at a large law firm, and when did that partner join the Court? Answers below the fold.

John Roberts of Hogan & Hartson, sworn in September 29, 2005.

P.S. Maybe Hugh meant to say “when the last big firm managing partner joined the court”?

  1. A random thought: The day John Roberts was nominated to the Supreme Court had to be one of the best days of his professional life. Getting the nod for Chief Justice was icing on the cake. It had to be a real let-down to see GWB’s next pick. Initially, John Roberts had to believe that GWB picked him for his experience and intellect but now he has to wonder exactly why he was picked. Could it actually have been the baseball analogies or the exercise regimen?

  2. I assume before Roberts it was Powell, no? Which also isn’t too hard to remember.

Patterico – What are the odds that Hewitt will ever respond to you or me? He seems to prefer arguing with people who aren’t practicing lawyers. I’ve certainly emailed him enough to try to get his attention.

  3. I dunno. I want to reiterate that I think Hugh is a very nice and generous man. I’ve met him, and he’s done a lot to help me with my blog. That doesn’t mean that he gets a pass when I find his arguments falling short of the mark — and he would never ask for that. But I think he’s a good guy who is just making wildly unpersuasive arguments on this issue.

As to when, if ever, he’ll engage us: I dunno. He’s a pretty busy guy, so I don’t insist that he respond to every criticism. I think he knows we’re out here, whether he explicitly acknowledges us or not.

  4. I’ve also met him and also think he’s a good guy. He’s just been over the top in this debate.
