Not Even Stopping at a “Third Way”

Filed under: Judiciary — Patterico @ 6:24 am

Condi Rice praises Harriet Miers:

“She is the kind of person who is _ if there have been four arguments given, Harriet’s going to look for the fifth,” said Rice, who was interviewed from London at the end of a diplomatic trip.

Sounds a lot like O’Connor to me.

  1. look for the fifth of what? Weller’s? Jack Black? Maybe the lady prefers Scotch?

  2. I agree with Bruce. If someone presented me with not two but four different arguments, I’d be driven to drink, too.

Say, what’s Condi’s judicial philosophy? You think she worries much about it?

Oh, yeah, Patterico, you’re included in my photoshop essay Harriet Miers: dreams and nightmares. Since none of us knows what judicial approach HM will take, we’re left with our hopes and fears.

  3. The quote speaks well for neither Miers nor Rice.

It pictures Miers more as a trifler than a lover of substance. And, Rice appears to have reached deep into her bag of diplomatic empty-speak — that is, in “support” of the Miers nomination, Ms. Rice chose to seek out a trifle rather than speak of substance.

Coupled with the embarrassing content of the personal notes from Miers to the President, the image of the nominee put forth by the administration over the last few days is hardly that of a person of eminent qualifications. Somehow my confidence in her is not raised by discovery that she is something of a toady who seems to value quantity of opinion quite as much as quality in establishing good policy.
