  1. David Frum has put together a petition asking the White House to withdraw the nomination of Harriet Miers. You can visit it here: http://frum.nationalreview.com/petition/

    I haven’t seen this very many places…

  2. If I recall my history lessons, didn’t hardheaded old King George object to the circulation of petitions, so much so that it was considered a violation of the law and an insult to the King.

Our forefathers thought that was unfair and decided to go their own way. They revolted against tyranny. But, King George tried to force them back into submission. Sound familiar?

That’s why we now have the right to assemble peacefully and petition for the redress of our grievances. Is this a great country, or what?

  3. Oh, come on now, Jack. George III wasn’t any more hardheaded than other monarchs of his day, and probably less so. He didn’t start coming down hard on the colonists until after they refused to pay taxes, destroyed property of British subjects, and just plain made nuisances of themselves. Things really went downhill after the tea incident. And after all that, plus six or seven years of shooting, he managed to be very gracious to your Ambassador Adams during his stay in London. I knew George III, and I can tell you, he wasn’t such a bad guy.

  4. HRH,

Respectfully, it seems that where you stand is where you sit. But, let’s not go on about yesterday’s news. Today, our people are the best of friends, and any differences between our governments are quite minor compared to the issues which once divided us.

These days, Tony Blair may enjoy more popularity here than in his own country. In fact, I’ll wager he couldn’t buy a pint in any proper tavern in the land. I’d stand him a few rounds myself, and drink a toast to your health.

Now, I do understand that many of your subjects oppose British participation in Iraq. That’s OK. Responsible Americans do not resent honorable differences of opinion. We fully expect our friends to decide for themselves the major issues of the day.

We are grateful for Tony Blair’s steadfast support and we are honored to have the renowned British Armed Services standing along side our wonderful troops in the service of World Peace, and in bringing freedom to the Iraqi people.
