Online Petition Opposing Miers Nomination

Filed under: Judiciary — Patterico @ 7:12 am

David Frum has an online petition against the confirmation of Harriet Miers.

I might have worded it a bit differently if I had written it myself. Nevertheless, I think it’s an important way to communicate the grassroots opposition to this nomination. I have signed it, and I encourage other opponents of the nomination to do the same.

  1. To sign or not to sign? I think David Frum could have made this decision easier if he had written the petition so that it said there were other prospective nominees whose available records clearly demonstrated their having the listed qualifications, whereas Ms. Miers has no such record. David Frum worked in the White House, so maybe he has a sufficient basis to say that “Miers is not that person.” And maybe he’s right. But if I won’t accept “just trust me” from the President, I’m not going to accept it from Frum. I’m worried about Miers, and I think there are other, obviously qualified people for the job, so I’m not at all reluctant to say that the President should, now that he’s found himself in a hole, stop digging. But I’m not willing to say, without more, that “Miers is not that person.”

To be completely candid, I might say that the President has made decisions on certain matters that indicate his own “judicial philosophy” is not what we should be looking for in a Supreme Court justice, and therefore his assurance regarding Miers doesn’t have the effect he expected. I don’t imagine that would be very persuasive within the White House, though.

[I agree that he worded it badly. — Patterico]

  2. David Frum is Not My President

Beldar is not impressed by David Frum’s petulant petition, nor by the National Review generally for its failure to distance itself from it as an institution, but declines to set up a counter-petition of his own. Too bad.

  3. Harriet Miers will not withdraw and the President will not “pull” her nomination.

    Flap won’t be signing.

  4. I won’t sign because online petitions are lame.

Remember that online petition to get Peter Jackson to change the name of the film “The Two Towers” because some people thought it was a reference to 9/11?

    Yeah.

  5. You’ve got to love the choice of professions in the petition:
    Legal Practitioner
    Law Professor
    Law Student
    Retired Legal Practitioner
    Not Legally Affiliated
    Not specified

  6. I sent a big “no thanks” over to the petition, along with some of my reasons. I keep trying to find the point of this rebellion besides temper tantrum. I assume you voted for Bush? I gave him my vote twice.

I read that he did not keep his word. You were mislead into giving him your vote. Is that the same thing as lying? Sorry, Michael Moore and the world already has that one. “Bush Lied”. Surely you got the memo?

If you think you should have the ability to make decisions for him (after all, he is only our power voice) I hate to break this bad news. King McCain of the Gang has that one. Surely, you didn’t miss that memo.

If you think that Bush (and his little “that’s possible” wife) needs to meet with you and get your opinion as to how he makes his decisions (a poll?), sorry Mother Sheehan has that one. She seems to have taken a permanent seat and is extremely loud in shouting “You don’t speak for me, George W Bush”.

It does look as if you might get a seat at the table with the MSM. They have friends that appreciate this “meltdown”. I even read that Bush split the Republican party. Sure. Sorry taken, the Democrats already said he was not a uniter, but a divider. Proof? They are running a Bush Poll Slipping Watch today on FOX. Every 3 minutes their poll shows he is slipping.

So your point with the petition and opposition? A person that does not have all the high power smarts would look at the result. I assume you all intend to give the elections to Democrats and “blame Bush”. That bench has to be the most crowded.

  7. RE: #5
Owl, it is a poor sort of logic that simply pleads “If the other side believes it, it must be wrong.”

    Better arguers please.

  10. Isn’t it a bit early to be putting out petitions? We haven’t even heard her testimony before the committee yet.

  11. Tillman, it could be a poor argument but it’s the best I have. I have already cast my vote for 2 Senators (neither wimps, gang members or RINO) and a President to be my voice.

Not only does the other side believe it, it is wrong. I still say you can almost put any of the whines into one of the groups. The one I omitted was the group that “Bush is not smart enough”. Heck, he is a chimp, drawn with big ears and looking rather goofy.

  12. To which “grassroots opposition” are you referring, ‘rico?

The Weekly Standard editorial board grassroots? The National Review “Corner” blog echo chamber grassroots? The Robert Bork voted-down-by-the-Senate grassroots? The Published-in-Law-Review grassroots? The Krauthammer/Will/Fund/Buchanan Axis-of-Pundits grassroots?

    Or the Voted-For-Bush/Manned-a-Phone-Bank-in ’04/

    grassroots?

Besides, Frum’s a Canuck, and should stick his nose in America Junior’s business, not ours.

  13. Well crap. I swear the first time I viewed the petition there were checkboxes to select which legal profession you had. It’s gone now. It’s tough work being a troll when the material keeps changing.
