Daylight Saving Time Likely to be Extended
House and Senate negotiators have reached a compromise on the extension of Daylight Saving Time by four weeks.
I am a big fan of Daylight Saving Time, and wish that they’d make it the default time year-round. It allows me to ride my bike in the evenings, or take the kids for a walk on the beach at sunset. Having an extra four weeks will be nice.
Four more weeks!
Wow! Now I will have time to take that vacation to Paris. Why didn’t they think of this earlier?
Paul Deignan (fbb63f) — 7/21/2005 @ 7:32 pmDaylight Savings Time is exactly like the Indian chief who decided to make his blanket longer by cutting off a strip from one end and sewing it to the other. You’re in favor of leaving it sewed there, I presume, rather than making a semi-annual switch.
Beldar (a1e881) — 7/21/2005 @ 7:41 pmDork! Just get up earlier.

(So in case anyone is wondering about my comment, this is an inside joke in more than one way).
I’m guessing Patterico is making a joke as well.
Paul Deignan (fbb63f) — 7/21/2005 @ 8:02 pmI meant an extra four weeks of DST. Duh.
Patterico (756436) — 7/21/2005 @ 8:03 pmFuck Daylight Savings Time.
Arizona has it right.

The Southern California Law Blog » (36e489) — 7/21/2005 @ 11:03 pm[…] Patterico notes that congress is looking to expand daylight savings time by four weeks. I’m with Patterico, make it year round. […]
SayUncle : Time tickin’ in my head (8b22b3) — 7/22/2005 @ 5:42 amBut if we had it year-round, we’d need to have double-daylight-time in the summer.
Kevin Murphy (6a7945) — 7/22/2005 @ 8:45 amCongress will also pass a law to improve gas mileage by making a gallon 125% bigger than it is now.

Ken Hoover (559d1b) — 7/22/2005 @ 11:35 amYou might not be old enough to remember they had winter-time DST during the Arab oil embargo in ’73 and ’74. Parents got angry about it when they were sending their kids off to school in the dark and that was the end of it, as I recall.
I would have been in kindergarten and first grade.
I see from the article that that is one of the best remaining arguments against it. We’ll see if they get angry again.
I just love having the extra daylight in the evening. And I couldn’t care less about not having it in the morning.
Patterico (0be63e) — 7/22/2005 @ 11:48 amWe should totally abolish DST, and just tell people to show up to work earlier. If you show up to work late, you are helping the terrorists.
Shredstar (91b3b2) — 7/22/2005 @ 12:56 pmI think we should keep daylight savings time year round. We all have to get up in the dark anyway. How much darker can it get? I would love to see the sun after work. Having it in the am is not an option for most working class. Not many of us have the option of creating our own work schedule.
Sue Owens (90b95a) — 8/2/2005 @ 9:38 pmExtending daylight saving time should be no problem. It will not be any darker in March than it is at the tail end of daylight saving time in October. One exta week in the fall should be only a small problem. The sun will rise only ten mintues or less later in the extra week in the fall and if you are far enough north near the 49 degree of lattitude it will not be any later than what you get in December and January on standard time.
Gary Peterspm (592192) — 9/1/2005 @ 8:39 amIf getting more daylight after work is the goal, we should make the 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm hours only 50 minutes long. Increase the 5pm, 6pm, and 7pm hours to 75 minutes. We’ll have to build new clocks, but this gets us what we want.
