When Democrats Endorse Him, Run the Other Way

Harry Reid says that Gonzales is qualified for the Supreme Court.

Alberto Gonzales is Spanish for “David Souter.” Remember that.

  1. Harry Reid is desperate to cut his losses. Bush will nominate a good candidate, forcing Harry to filibuster, or at least to try.

Cuz if he doesn’t try at all, the moonbat wing deserts the Dems for sure.

If he tries and fails, the Moonbat wing might desert the Dems, but prob not. He can always redirect their anger to those wascally Wepublicans.

If he tries and succeeds in filibustering, the R’s invoke cloture. More than that, they change the rules so that next time around it’s hardly even a headline when they do.

Bush knows all this, too, and is gonna press his advantage while it lasts. I’m betting on Owen: keeps the base happy, recently vetted.

Reid’s got nowhere left to run, but to bluff and to hope for the best, and maybe minimize his losses as best he can. When he’s publicly recommending a guy that his own side calls the father of torture, you know he’s up against the wall. We should offer him a last cigarette.

  2. Yo creo que no. No son mismos.

I beg to differ with you they are not the same one is center/right the other is center/ left. “Both are close to the middle but Gonzales acts, and has acted, like he thinks the American Constitution is the final word. Period. Souter on occasions likes French or German law.

  3. My first choice is Janice Rogers Brown; but she is too far right for Bush. I am encouraged to see Fred – an old Reagan man- is going to be running the search. Or Bush may be putting on a front to fool us conservatives. We will know when the name is said.

  4. Yet, Reid voted against Gonzalez to become Attorney General. Who’d a thunk that the standards to serve as AG were tougher than the standards to get onto the Supreme Court?

[ANGRY CLAM: IT’S GONZALES WITH AN “S” GOD DAMN IT!]

  5. I like it. Abortion and Aff Action positions are not deal-killers for me.

His personal story is so compelling, and he arrived at his positions through life experience and hard work. With Fred Thompson stagemanaging the process, I can hardly wait to see Kennedy, Reid, Byrd, and all the others who confirmed him once have to 1) ask the same questions; 2) admit they made a mistake in confirming him as AG; or 3) explain how Gonzalez qualifies for breaking the agreement on use of filibuster.

I would also like to see Janice Rogers Brown on deck.

[ANGRY CLAM: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, IF YOU’RE SUCH A BIG FAN, LEARN TO SPELL HIS NAME CORRECTLY!]

  6. Thanks Clam, for the spell-check. My bad.

  7. Why are you so hung up on the spelling of Albert Gonzales’ name?

[PATTERICO: IT’S ALBERTO NOT ALBERT GOD DA — Oh, you’re probably just pimping me and the Clam, huh?]

  8. It irritates me when people don’t pay attention to detail. Particularly when it’s about a well-known person.

  9. Clamm and Pattarico: why aren’t both of you equally hung up over Chris Cross’s inappropriate use of a final apostrophe? “Gonzales” is not a plural, so the possessive should be Gonzales’s, not Gonzales’.

  10. “How to form the possessive of polysyllabic personal names ending with the sound of s or z probably occasions more dissension among writers and editors than an other orthographic matter open to disagreement. Some espouse the rule that the possessive of all such names should be formed by the addition of an apostrophe only…. Other writers and editors simply abandon the attempt to define in precise phonic or orthographic terms the class of polysyllabic names to which only the apostrophe should be attached and follow a more pragmatic rule. In essence this is, ‘If it ends with a z sound, treat it like a plural; if it ends with an s sound, treat it like a singular.’…[The University of Chicago Press] is willing, however, to accept other ways of handling these situations if they are consistently followed throughout a manuscript.”

  11. Angry Calm, I’m a big fan of yours, too.

  12. OK, smartypants, what does the Chicago Manual of Style say about how to spell the name Gonzales/Gonzalez?

    Xrlq (158f18)

  13. Also, manuals aside, I doubt anyone in this thread would say “Alberto Gonzales’ name” (seven syllables) rather than “Alberto Gonzales’s name” (eight).

    Xrlq (158f18)

  14. So his name is now: Albertino Gonz’ales?

    Christopher Cross (618f3b)

  15. I’d hate to see what the Clam would say about the guy at Volokh who repeatedly insists on spelling the Chief Justice’s name as “Rhenquist.”

    Patterico (756436)

  16. I guess the Qlam’s entitled to be a little self-righteous about spelling, being one of the few sometime bloggers out there who has never called me Xlrq.
