Outside the Tent — Occasional? Experimental? Dead?

Filed under: Dog Trainer — Patterico @ 6:21 am

The L.A. Times Outside the Tent column, which provides space in the Sunday Opinion section to critics of the paper, has not run since April 24. Not one Outside the Tent column ran during the entire month of May.

There’s no lack of ammunition, and no lack of articulate critics of the paper. What gives?

  1. Does anyone know the comparative circulation figures for the LA Times now and in the ’60’s or 70’s when the Examiner was still around? I have a bet with my husband that the Times had more readership when fewer people were living here. He says no; that the paper has consistently had the same circulation for decades. I love this site because someone has to edit this POS paper! No wonder the tent is empty!

  2. The LA Times’ circulation is now back to where it was in either the 1960’s or the 1970’s. My May 5th post at http://www.lacowboy.com describes how the LAT is losing subscribers faster than any paper in the country, and links to a story covering that.

But another story at the same time gave both the peak figure of LAT circulation (far higher than it is now) and the date at which it was last at this low a number (which I THINK was the 1960’s, if not – then the 1970’s), but I can not find it right now. But I will post it when I can find it.

  3. From LA Times website:

April 1990 Times circulation reaches an all-time high of 1,225,189 daily and 1,514,096 Sunday, making it the largest daily metropolitan newspaper in the country.

Current daily circulation is a little over 900,000 and Sunday is around 1,250,000.

  4. I think Latimes has figured out that the “outside” is a whole lot bigger than the “tent”, and they don’t like the way the geometry shapes up.

  5. Perhaps the LAT figured that, hey, since they haven’t made a single mistake in a month, there can’t possibly be anything to criticize.

    Am I joking?

  6. With the reassignment of their editorial staff a month or so ago all of the new writers/editorialists are all Kinsley hires/assignments.

Even their attempt at a blog will not help them.

BTW the blog is not really a blog, but a moderated series of discussion essays where not every comment is posted (ask me how I know!).

  7. Anyone else notice the MSM yelling that Army Recruiting has been down in the past few months? Perhaps the 5.1% unemployment rate, the lowest it has been since 9/11, has something to do with the Army (and anyone else) finding employees. It’s too juicy a story for the MSM to pass up – the drop being evidence of recruits cowering in fear at massive numbers Iraq casualties.
