Thank Trent Lott

It turns out that Trent Lott — the guy who coined that helpful term “nuclear option” — is also the guy who started the ball rolling on the capitulation.

Thank you once again, Trent.

  1. I actually met up with Lott on Saturday at the opening of the Natchez stretch of the Natchez Trace Parkway. I had a few questions about the filibusters, and I wanted a *straight* answer on whether or not he felt that bipartisan compromise was dead on this issue, since it had been reported that he’d been trying to broker a deal before. I mean, I wanted a specific answer, none of this generic, “I support the nuclear option blah blah blah…pay no attention to those negotiations behind the curtain.”

He shook my hand, but upon seeing my press badge, he left rather suddenly. Can’t imagine why.

In retrospect, it would have been interesting to have had a quote before these maver…erm…rogue senators sold their souls.

    But then again, maybe not.

(I’m going to have the full details on my site soon, by the way. I’ve just got to sit down with my backup reporter, who did such an admirable job on this project that she will be coblogging with me on the post. A UPR first.)

(And yes, that last part was sort of a shameless plug.)

    (So prosecute me.)

  2. Liberals have been telling republicans to get rid of Lott for a while now.

  3. I heard one Republican Senator on TV a week ago threatening to “pull the trigger on the Nuclear Option”. What a happy image. Sometimes get good deeds equated to blowing up a bomb killing 100,000; other times we get trivial stuff equated to Nazi evil.

  5. Heck of a thing when Trent Lott’s the sane one.

  6. When that’s the case, let us know…

  7. This was an article from the LA Dog Trainer. Can it be trusted?

  8. Of course Lott was part of this.

He saw Frist getting his ass burned, and he didn’t want to be part of it.

Now Frist looks like what he is (craven for power and beholden to religious extremists) and Frist’s chances as a viable candidate in 08 are going down quicker than the Titanic.

  9. Frist is not viable in ’08 because the container of Jell-O pudding in my fridge has more backbone.

  10. I love you thugs. Get handed one defeat and you turn tail and run.

Sorry, but peace love and understanding are going to prevail unless you raise the fear index. C’mon, if this doesn’t call for a little hate mongering, what does?

    Jeez you brownshirts are pathetic.

  11. Hey look, here’s a perfect candidate for you guys to get behind:

From a press release issued yesterday by Randall Terry’s office:

In three separate press conferences throughout Florida’s Eighth Senate District, Public Defender James Purdy and Republican Executive Committee member Kay Durden will publicly urge Randall Terry to become the next State Senator from District 8.

    […]

Mr. Terry has been a nationally known public advocate for social conservative causes for the past 20 years. Most recently, Mr. Terry served as the media coordinator and frequent spokesman for the Schindler family during the battle to save Terri Schindler Schiavo from starvation.

Yes, a guy who has been arrested over 40 times, who declared bankruptcy as a way to avoid paying the judgments he owed after being sued for his harassment of women at abortion clinics, who divorced his wife of 19 years and almost immediately married his young former assistant, who got kicked out of his church for his inappropriate conduct with women, and who believes that the death penalty is appropriate for abortion providers, is planning to run for the state senate.  I’m sure he’s just what the people of Florida need, and we wish him well in his efforts
