It’s a “New Low” for New York Times Editors

The New York Times today editorializes:

The judicial nominations debate reached a new low this week when a Republican senator compared his Democratic colleagues to Hitler.

A “new low”?? Evidently the editors haven’t been reading their own paper again. The paper ran an AP story on March 3 which reported that Democratic Senator Robert Byrd had compared his Republican colleagues to Hitler. Here’s the relevant language, from Byrd’s web site:

Many times in our history we have taken up arms to protect a minority against the tyrannical majority in other lands. We, unlike Nazi Germany or Mussolini’s Italy, have never stopped being a nation of laws, not of men.

But witness how men with motives and a majority can manipulate law to cruel and unjust ends. Historian Alan Bullock writes that Hitler’s dictatorship rested on the constitutional foundation of a single law, the Enabling Law. Hitler needed a two-thirds vote to pass that law, and he cajoled his opposition in the Reichstag to support it. Bullock writes that “Hitler was prepared to promise anything to get his bill through, with the appearances of legality preserved intact.” And he succeeded.

“Hitler’s originality lay in his realization that effective revolutions, in modern conditions, are carried out with, and not against, the power of the State: the correct order of events was first to secure access to that power and then begin his revolution. Hitler never abandoned the cloak of legality; he recognized the enormous psychological value of having the law on his side. Instead, he turned the law inside out and made illegality legal.”

And that is what the nuclear option seeks to do to Rule XXII of the Standing Rules of the Senate.

Conservative bloggers have almost unanimously condemned Santorum’s ridiculous Nazi comparison. But for New York Times editors, it’s only a “new low” when a Republican does it.

  1. Thanks for the additional info on this. I blogged on the Santorum-Byrd issue yesterday, but did not have the actual Byrd quote, so adding it via link.

  2. Patterico,

Actually, the NYT might be right. Call it their own soft bigotry of low expectations, perhaps, but their comments indicate that they expect such language from Dems, but not from Republicans. Only when a Republican speaks in this manner is it considered unusual enough to even comment on.

Even the NYT only expects better from one party. Speaks volumes, eh?

I had an Article written about me in the L.A. Bill Wasz, who was a Major Player in The OJ Simpson Case, also Posted on The Discussion Board. Bill Wasz was Murdered in the Middle of March of this Year, 2005. My personal belief, and others belief, was that he was Murdered because of information He had in the Case, and Him being involved in the Case. The events leading up to His Death (Murder) are ASTONISHING to say the least. He also had a Paperback Book already Printed and ready to be Distributed, Titled, “We Only Kill Our Friends.”

  5. In defense of the NYT, perhaps it’s correct to assume that there’s nothing new that Senator Byrd might possibly say that could take him to a “new low.” One has to believe that if there is such a thing as “the bottom,” Senator Byrd long ago reached it.

  6. […] y if he would support the “nuclear option” if a compromise fails. By the way, Patterico had some interesting comments about the strange attitude […]

  7. The Hitler Double Standard

I wrote here Friday that it isn’t big news when a Democrat compares a Republican to Hitler because they do it so often.I have listened to Democrats make the comparisons of Bush to Hitler for four years now and at some point it just stopped being shock…

  8. yes senator Byrd, you are SOOOO right. We’ve always been a nation of laws not men….mmm hmmm. Right, like when the constitution stated that all men were created equal and then you tried to prevent the constitution from being abided by and participated in trying to prevent civil rights legislation. It seems to me that back then a lot men had run over the law, and you were one of them. Perhaps you could at least acknowledge that.

  9. And I might add that again today you are running all over the constitution by preventing the constitutional 50 vote requirement of judicial nominees from being abided by. It seems to me that there is no other senator alive today that has a more contemptible record than you in abiding by and enforcing the constitution.
