Tell Us What You Really Think, Times Editors

I’m not entirely sure, but I’m starting to suspect that the L.A. Times wants readers to believe that there have been some recent missteps by Arnold Schwarzenegger:

From an April 28 news story:

Since his speech in January, the governor has watched his political fortunes fall amid a series of missteps and miscalculations.

From an April 27 editorial:

Buoyed by such missteps, Democrats went on the attack.

From an April 26 news story:

During an appearance in Chatsworth, Shriver dismissed reports that she was worried about recent political missteps by her husband and his aides.

From an April 26 letter to the editor:

After reading how Maria Shriver felt compelled to “step in” to help her husband correct his missteps, the phrase “girlie governor” came to mind.

From an April 22 news story:

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is facing infighting among his senior staff and campaign team, which has contributed to a series of political missteps that threaten the once soaring governor’s ambitious agenda, more than a dozen aides and lawmakers said Thursday.

But the folks at The Times don’t have a one-dimensional view of Schwarzenegger. They chronicle his missteps, to be sure . . . but, on the other hand, they also tell readers about his miscalculations:

From the April 28 news story mentioned above:

Since his speech in January, the governor has watched his political fortunes fall amid a series of missteps and miscalculations.

From an April 25 news story:

Although outside forces played an important part in Schwarzenegger’s slump, even those sympathetic to the governor say many of his problems are self-inflicted, a result of overreaching, hubris, poor staff work and serious miscalculations.

. . . .

Above all, Schwarzenegger’s friends and enemies agree, the governor miscalculated by trying to accomplish too much in too short a time, without laying the necessary groundwork.

Not surprisingly, Democrats agree. From an April 10 Steve Lopez column:

But that’s the governor’s fault, said Democratic consultant Darry Sragow, who helped promote the governor’s borrowing and budget-balancing propositions last year.

“I think he made an incredible set of miscalculations,” Sragow said.

I’m sure Democrats are pleased to see their point of view so faithfully represented in the L.A. Times — time and time and time again.

  1. I notice the Apr 29 online Gov. Praises ‘Minuteman’ Campaign article has this quote, one of my favorites.

The leader of a Mexican American group called the governor’s comments “shameful” and “nothing short of base racism.”

“I think we’re seeing the real Arnold Schwarzenegger. The mask has now fallen,” said Nativo V. Lopez, state national president of the Mexican American Political Assn. “Those of immigrant stock should have no illusions about what his real sentiments and feelings are toward them.”

It seems like the LA Times can’t get their mind off Pete Wilson – they keep repeating how he was behind Prop-187, which was very offensive to the pro-illegals crowd. And they note over and over again how some of Wilson’s aids now work for Arnold.

  2. The Democrats say something, the LA Times repeat it ad-nauseum. There’s not a real surprise here, other than the fact that it took them so long to start repeating Democrat phrases.

  4. But they have always been fond of Arnold! They never made up negative stories about him before. Oh wait that was Davis.

  5. There’s more Wilson envy in today’s story Polls Push Governor to the Border. You’ve got to love how LA Times launches into this outrage magnification every day. To be fair, this unfair analysis of the news is labeled as News Analysis instead of being labeled as actual news.

Bruce Cain, director of the Institute of Governmental Studies at UC Berkeley, said the governor may well be speaking from the heart: Many legal immigrants are resentful of undocumented immigrants.

But Cain added a caveat: Many of Schwarzenegger’s top advisors worked for former Gov. Pete Wilson, who rode the issue of illegal immigration in the mid-1990s by campaigning for Proposition 187, which denied state services to illegal immigrants but which was later overturned by courts.

“They have played this card before,” Cain said. Focusing on immigration, Cain added, “probably gets people away from obsessing on his defeats. It’s possible this is a conscious strategy, but I also believe this is true to his heart.”

  6. With all the reporting on how messed up King/Drew is, why doesn’t LA Times also report on how many emergency rooms and clinics have been closed in the region, and why? Perhaps the Governor is taking on the pro-illegals crowd because it is bogus to have hospitals and schools gorged with people who ran into the country through the desert, instead of using an official border crossing.

  7. If you see any “news” in the LAT about Arnold you know before even reading it that it wil be: a. Lies and half truths. and b. A smear.

  8. LA Times takes a big drop
The Liberal Always Times seems to be falling out of favor with readers. The circulation took a huge drop over the past year dropping 6.5 percent of its readers despite the fact that the economy and population growth are strong…
