Happy Birthday to My Dad

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 1:00 am

As I have done every March 17 since I started this blog, I am wishing my Dad a Happy Birthday.

It is a tradition to note my previous similar posts on this special day.

He would have been 94 today.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

  1. I lost my dad on Thanksgiving Day 1996 and my mom on July 4th 2014. I still miss ’em, but I’ll save my toasts for them on Memorial Day. For me it’s Sunday, but Happy St. Paddy’s Day to the rest!

  7. Happy birthday to your dad, Patterico!

My father died December 4, 2012. He would’ve turned 88 years old on April 3rd. This year, I look forward to the drive up to his hometown and place of birth, a beautiful small city at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains, to place flowers and spend some time at his burial site on Father’s Day.

Those of us who were fortunate to have fathers who taught us and showed – by example – what it means to be a good man can do the same for our sons. What a gift that is.

  9. Patterico, you know I lost my father and mother over the past few years, and how I try to honor them. My late father told me that he never felt like an adult until his own father died—which happened when I was in my 30s. My father was the toughest man I ever knew, so imagine how I felt.

But I understood after my father passed away.

All we can do is honor their memory and example. And you have done that, so very much.

Thinking of you and your family.

  10. St. Patrick’s Day birthday, eh? Does that have anything to do with how you ended up a Patrick, yourself? 😉 God bless you and yours, Pat. Especially the late Patterico the Elder.

  11. Our dad sure did enjoy all the St. Patrick’s Day references and stuff on his birthday. Even to the point that my name, Kerry is named after the county in Southern Ireland. I miss those birthday parties, and him daily.

  12. True story:

My dad was the third-oldest of nine children born to a mother of German stock and an Irish father. Dad’s paternal grandfather, my great-Grandpa John Kelly, came from County Cork. I know very little else about him. It was through this patrilineal line, my dad’s dad’s dad, that I have the surname of Kelly although I am only 1/4 Irish.

Anyway, Dad’s two older brothers — Patrick and Michael — were both born on Saint Patrick’s day. And the fun doesn’t stop there. One of my mother’s college friends whom she still keeps in touch with to this day was also born on St. Patrick’s Day: Patricia King. 😀

  13. Here’s to his eternal well-being, Patterico.

March 19 was ny maternal grandmothers birthday hence Josefa (St. Joseph). Also, her eldest son, my Uncle John was June 24 (St. John the Baptist, one of the 4 feast days celebrated by the Arthurian Knights).
