Elijah Cummings’ Home Burglarized, Police Say

This is unfortunate:

Rep. Elijah Cummings’ Baltimore home was broken into over the weekend, police and a report said Thursday.

The burglary took place Saturday around 3:40 a.m. at the house in the 200 block of Madison Avenue, a Baltimore Police Department spokeswoman said.

According to local outlet WJZ, that is where the Democratic congressman lives. It’s still unclear if anything was stolen, cops said.

The break-in occurred several hours before President Trump accused the House Oversight Committee chair on Twitter of being a “brutal bully” and called Cummings’ district a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess” and a “very dangerous place.”

President Trump reacted to the break-in on Twitter:

My unpopular opinion: If it was anyone else but Trump saying this, I would assume that it was a heartfelt gesture. But this is Trump we’re talking about, and history has shown that such a charitable read would be foolish. So I’m just going to say: what a deplorable response from the president. In light of his very recent attacks on Cummings and his city, it would have been best if the president had simply remained silent.

  1. Yes, but the break-in happened before the President tweeted about Cummings and Baltimore, so this was hardly a case of cause and effect. Terrible news, but the only thing making this news worthy is the timing and the President’s previous tweets highlighting the known issues with the city. Although I’m sure the media will play it up and will be in a frenzy for the next month. When they’re done foaming at the mouth over this I would like to see someone compare the coverage of this non-event vs something like Rand Paul’s attack.

  2. For some odd reason, I’m far more concerned about the deplorable conditions in Baltimore, which urgently need a spotlight focusing on it, than I am worried about how a Trump tweet can be spun.

I happen to loathe Trump’s incessant tweeting, and have said so many times. However, no matter how he does it, even tweeting, I applaud him shining a spotlight on the crime and rat ridden disgrace Baltimore has become. When I was in Baltimore 4 years ago, I was shocked and appalled, and it has grown worse since.

Time to actually look at the problem, rather then focus on hand-wringing over the messenger.

  3. I think that Trump is drawing the focus away from solving Baltimore’s problems by drawing the focus onto himself. In this, he is essentially letting the Dems running the city off the hook by giving them red meat to throw out there. He shoots himself in the foot again.
