President Trump Triples Down, Calls For Apology (UPDATE: GOP Members Find A Backbone)

Yesterday, we saw President Trump unwisely step in and distract Democrats from their infighting by making himself the focus of their attention with his inaccurate and inflammatory tweets attacking members of their caucus. Last night, he doubled down on his perceived righteousness in the conflict. This morning, he is tripling down by way of calling for an apology from the same Democratic Congresswomen that he suggested go back to where they came from and then come back to govern:

When will the Radical Left Congresswomen apologize to our Country, the people of Israel and even to the Office of the President, for the foul language they have used, and the terrible things they have said. So many people are angry at them & their horrible & disgusting actions!

If Democrats want to unite around the foul language & racist hatred spewed from the mouths and actions of these very unpopular & unrepresentative Congresswomen, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. I can tell you that they have made Israel feel abandoned by the U.S.

It’s ironic that, along with helping the Democrats by his reckless tweeting, President Trump has once again forced the hand of the GOP’s sitting members of Congress. Does the elected official ignore his own moral compass and remain silent in order to stay in Trump’s good graces, or is he compelled to follow his own conscience and publicly condemn the President’s bigoted comments – consequences be damned?

Sen. Pat Toomey isn’t afraid to follow his conscience:

President Trump was wrong to suggest that four left-wing congresswomen should go back to where they came from. Three of the four were born in America and the citizenship of all four is as valid as mine. I couldn’t disagree more with these congresswomen’s views on immigration, socialism, national security, and virtually every policy issue. But they are entitled to their opinions, however misguided they may be. We should defeat their ideas on the merits, not on the basis of their ancestry.

With this latest kerfuffle, Jonathan Swan revisits Trump’s assertion made during the presidential campaign that he could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and he wouldn’t lose any voters. It was true then, and sadly, it appears to be true now:

Trump knows he can say whatever he likes and face no consequences from the party he has conquered.

The few Republicans who dared to defy him either got crushed by pro-Trump candidates in primaries (Rep. Mark Sanford), quit the party (Rep. Justin Amash) or retired (Sens. Jeff Flake and Bob Corker). One remaining critic, Sen. Mitt Romney, mostly pushes back by issuing stern but ineffectual tweets. And Sen. Ben Sasse, who used to lambaste the president, has mostly gone silent.

No modern president, besides George W. Bush immediately after the 9/11 attacks, has enjoyed such popularity with Republican voters.

UPDATE: Via Sahil Kapur of Bloomberg and Dallas News, these are the Republicans that have joined Sen. Toomey in denouncing President Trump for his comments toward the four Democratic congresswomen: Rep. Mike Turner, Rep. Will Hurd, Rep. Pete Olson, Rep. Chip Roy, Sen. Tim Scott, Sen. Susan Collins.

And via Alison King of NBC10 Boston, comes this weak tea from Mitt Romney:

“I certainly feel a number of these new members of Congress have views that are not consistent with my experience and not consistent with building a strong America.”

“At the same time, I recognize that the Pres has a unique and noble calling to unite all Americans regardless of our creeds or race or place of our national origin and I think in that case, the Pres fell far short.”

Lol. It’s disconcerting that this even crossed my mind: Because we are in the middle of the crazy season that is Trump, some ardent loyalists might even be rationalizing that yesterday and today’s awful comments by Trump are just part of a super smart strategery he thought of as a way to weed out those in Congress who are disloyal to him…

President Trump has once again forced the hand of the GOP’s sitting members of Congress.

He’s trying to force the hand of the sitting Democratic members of Congress. Either side with the Squad, or condemn them.

I think all the members of the Squad are against, or unfair to, Israel, but hiw have they made Israel feel abandoned by the United States government? Not even by the Congress, not even by the Democratic Party, but by the United States? That’s what Trump is trying to sell, in a bid to force.the Demcrats to isolate them, or otherwise isolate themselves.

I think this is another one of those Rorschach test now…

I still think these tweets is a tactical error of epic proportion, if for nothing else, it opens the barn door for criticism.

Let’s look at Trump’s now-infamous question, “Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”
It is a question, isn’t it? There’s no question mark. That makes it feel more like an imperative. It reminds me of the saying I remember from the Vietnam Era, “America, love it or leave it.”

Here’s the entire statement — a tripartite tweet (1, 2, 3):

That’s from 22 hours ago. He got a lot of pushback — including Power Line’s “A Blunder of Epic Proportions” — but he didn’t walk it back. He’s Donald Trump; he doubled down. From 11 hours ago — a 2-part tweet (1, 2):

So sad to see the Democrats sticking up for people who speak so badly of our Country and who, in addition, hate Israel with a true and unbridled passion. Whenever confronted, they call their adversaries, including Nancy Pelosi, “RACIST.” Their disgusting language….. ….and the many terrible things they say about the United States must not be allowed to go unchallenged. 1. Who is he talking about? He doesn’t name names, so it’s an invitation for others to do the defining. I see many people talking about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and expressing outrage that Trump would speak of her as an immigrant when she was born in the United States. But he didn’t name her. His words exclude her. She’s really got a hold on people’s mind!

2. What, exactly, is supposed to be racist here? Clearly, these tweets cause some readers to feel that racism is being expressed, but it’s hard to find it in these words. I see “RACIST” but that’s in the context of ostensibly sticking up for Nancy Pelosi. Some Democrats are calling her racist, and that shows how unfairly quick they are to see racism. Defending Pelosi, he implicitly defends himself.

3. Is it xenophobia? He’s not saying get out and stay out. He’s saying don’t criticize the United States if you immigrated from a worse country. Go back to that place, fix it, and “The come back and show us… how it is done.” He’s welcoming the immigrant back, after these steps are taken. Of course, it’s unrealistic to expect someone to return to a place they left and become involved in changing that place, but it’s a figure of speech. He seems to be saying that those who were not born here, who chose to move here, have a special obligation to express love for America, that they should tone down their criticism of America.

4. If telling these Congresswomen to tone it down is wrong, Nancy Pelosi was wrong too. (See “Tensions Between Pelosi and Progressive Democrats of ‘the Squad’ Burst Into Flame” (NYT).) So, again, Trump lines himself up with Pelosi. How do you defend Pelosi without defending Trump? In this view, it’s a clever (and cruel) rhetorical move by Trump.

I don’t know if it’s fair to chaulk this up as Trump being a racists or even a bigot.

Trump has no regrets about his comments:

This is what conservatives have been saying about liberals for the entirety of my adult life. Yeah, political figures have usually refrained from saying it, but their *supporters* haven’t. It’s not surprising on some level that a lot of people are thrilled to have a President openly saying things they’ve always believed.

They are now left supporting known anti-semites that harbor no nice feelings for America. There was a time when all good patriots said this. Even Conservative Inc. has fallen. Love that Trump. Hopefully, all the weak-kneed “This will win me some points with the New York Times” Republicans will speak up and Condemn Trump’s words and support Nancy Pelosi. Have we heard from Mittens yet? I suppose after scolding and attacking Trump 20 times in the MSM since Jan 2017, he might have lost his enthusiasm.

Pelosi sent her letter to members today, neatly tying it in with the immigration mess and ICE raids. It’s standard Pelosi-like. We’ll have to see if it rallies her troops into a unified front.

Actually, he’s trying to give them a choice of two alternatives, neither of which they want to do: To freeze them out, or not to freeze them out.

Trump, or whoever is whispering in his ear, knows that the Democratic leadership doesn’t want to freeze them out and that’s pretty high priority. It’s not like they came out against gay marriage or abortion, which would lead to shunning. (Trump isn’t going there either – he confines himself to subjects on which the Democrats are not willing either to agree or to disagree with what he says.

Or rather, show by tehir actions or inactions that they disagree, but are not willing to stand up for it. Here, for instance, just why are these four are still members in good standing of the Democratic caucus.

If only it was possible to say “I don’t agree with the things they say and I still think Trump’s comments were Racist and dumb.”

Some of it may be the moral equivalent of racism (although Trump is backing off) but none of it is racist – remember PAtterico;s rule of your opponent recignizing your description of his positioon. No one will recognize that description.

And they are not so much dumb, as dumbed down. They’re bad both in logic and in fact.

It’s about time someone, anyone put this into clear focus. I read it very simply as “get your America hating asses out of here if you don’t like it!” nothing racist. nothing other than voicing what is on the minds of clear thinking Americans. At least Trump has the balls to call these cretins out, political correctness and the hate from the left be damned. Major kudos!!

One surreal aspect of Trump telling malcontents to leave the country if they’re so unhappy here is that there may have been no right-leaning celebrity/aspiring politician in the United States who spoke as harshly about America during the Obama years as Trump himself. “This country is a hellhole. We are going down fast,” he said (on Megyn Kelly’s show!) a month before launching his presidential bid in 2015. It’s not unusual to hear that from populist outsiders on either side politically; 80 percent of the appeal of nationalism is the idea that invaders of various sorts have ruined the homeland economically and culturally and need to be neutralized or removed — “go back to your home countries” — to restore it to greatness. If everyone who thinks America sucks because it’s not living up to its promise had to live abroad, Trump would have spent the duration of the Obama presidency tweeting from Scotland.

Trump doesn’t know how to behave with grace like Mittens. He actually believes in something.

Of course, the people Mitt felt he should be graceful to cruelly mocked him in 2012–“Russia isn’t a foe!” “Its the 21st century!” And he let them.

He slunk away to the deep carpeted, air-conditioned peace and quiet on K street, where the GOP inner-circle sipped martinis, compared Ascots, and complimented him on his grace and style.

Mitt was even gracious when Candy Crowley stopped eating long enough to correct him in a debate for the Presidency. (“Let’s not make a scene!”)

Inviting those who detest America to leave, was once celebrated among the voters the GOP needs as “Love it or Leave It!” It was a strong sentiment. Proud of the USA. Unembarrassed by patriotism. Disdainful of socialists, Eurotrash-sociologists dependent on US money, useless philosophes, tenured professors of Lenin Studies at XYZ University, and their ilk.

“Love it or leave it” was lustily disdainful of those who fashionably agonize now, from the safety of peace, about using the A bomb to help end WWII. And of country club GOP types (“”Where is the polo ground?”), that are timid in their patriotism.

Media celebrates Rapinoe; Brett Stephens wonders if immigrants aren’t better than the citizens we have; democrats know migrants are better. But the mitten-like republicans feel bad that Trump said those who dislike America should leave, then come back to tell us what they’ve done in the sinkholes they came from. Not me.

It was Lindsey Graham who called them a bunch of Communists etc – trying to switch the line of attack apparently. Trump apaprently sent four tweets this morning doing nothing except quoting Lindsey Graham.

That would explain the digression:

‘we don’t need to know anything about them personally, talk about their policies. I think they are American citizens who are duly elected that are running on an agenda that is disgusting, that the American people will reject.’

And the use of the third person here:

‘They wanted……..to impeach President Trump on DAY ONE. Make them the face of the future of the Democrat Party, you will destroy the Democrat Party. Their policies will destroy our Country!”

That’s all Senator Lindsey Graham.

It’s not a re-tweet and Trump doesn’t make it clear where he’s taking it from. It’s what Lindsey graham said on Fox and Friends.

The question is who actually typed that all in, or cut and pasted it from somewhere.

By the way, there actually weren’t )and probably logistically can’t be) any ICE raids. There were just in a few places where they tried to trick people into going outside and “talking” to them.

They had no legal right to enter a location to make an arrest. So they eventually gave up maybe after making another try.

In Chicago there was an arrest but they were released later.

I should’ve clarified… I think it bodes well for democratic voters, but would turn off swing voters (and voters who aren’t political junkies like we are).

I also wonder if Trump is doing this to get the old guard GOPers to lash out at him to keep his “outsider bonafides” strong. There’s something to be said for creating a divisive “US vs. Them” political environment.

Whereas “thanks to each wave of new arrivals to this land of opportunity, we’re a nation forever young, forever bursting with energy and new ideas, and always on the cutting edge”, always leading the world to the next frontier;

Whereas this openness is vital to our future as a Nation, and “if we ever closed the door to new Americans, our leadership in the world would soon be lost”; and

Whereas President Trump’s racist comments have legitimized fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color: Now, therefore, be it resolved, That the House of Representatives —

(1) believes that immigrants and their descendants have made America stronger, and that those who take the oath of citizenship are every bit as American as those whose families have lived in the United States for many generations;

(2) is committed to keeping America open to those lawfully seeking refuge and asylum from violence and oppression, and those who are willing to work hard to live the American Dream, no matter their race, ethnicity, faith, or country of origin; and

(3) condemns President Donald Trump’s racist comments that have legitimized and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color by saying that our fellow Americans who are immigrants, and those who may look to the President like immigrants, should “go back” to other countries, by referring to immigrants and asylum seekers as “invaders,” and by saying that Members of Congress who are immigrants (or those of our colleagues who are wrongly assumed to be immigrants) do not belong in Congress or in the United States of America.

I don’t follow,

In New York, in 2018, the June primary on;y applied to federal offices. It had been that way in 2016 also. The state primaries were in September.
