President Trump Triples Down, Calls For Apology (UPDATE: GOP Members Find A Backbone)

Filed under: General — Dana @ 10:02 am

[guest post by Dana]

Yesterday, we saw President Trump unwisely step in and distract Democrats from their infighting by making himself the focus of their attention with his inaccurate and inflammatory tweets attacking members of their caucus. Last night, he doubled down on his perceived righteousness in the conflict. This morning, he is tripling down by way of calling for an apology from the same Democratic Congresswomen that he suggested go back to where they came from and then come back to govern:

When will the Radical Left Congresswomen apologize to our Country, the people of Israel and even to the Office of the President, for the foul language they have used, and the terrible things they have said. So many people are angry at them & their horrible & disgusting actions!

If Democrats want to unite around the foul language & racist hatred spewed from the mouths and actions of these very unpopular & unrepresentative Congresswomen, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. I can tell you that they have made Israel feel abandoned by the U.S.

It’s ironic that, along with helping the Democrats by his reckless tweeting, President Trump has once again forced the hand of the GOP’s sitting members of Congress. Does the elected official ignore his own moral compass and remain silent in order to stay in Trump’s good graces, or is he compelled to follow his own conscience and publicly condemn the President’s bigoted comments – consequences be damned?

Sen. Pat Toomey isn’t afraid to follow his conscience:

President Trump was wrong to suggest that four left-wing congresswomen should go back to where they came from. Three of the four were born in America and the citizenship of all four is as valid as mine. I couldn’t disagree more with these congresswomen’s views on immigration, socialism, national security, and virtually every policy issue. But they are entitled to their opinions, however misguided they may be. We should defeat their ideas on the merits, not on the basis of their ancestry.

With this latest kerfuffle, Jonathan Swan revisits Trump’s assertion made during the presidential campaign that he could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and he wouldn’t lose any voters. It was true then, and sadly, it appears to be true now:

Trump knows he can say whatever he likes and face no consequences from the party he has conquered.

The few Republicans who dared to defy him either got crushed by pro-Trump candidates in primaries (Rep. Mark Sanford), quit the party (Rep. Justin Amash) or retired (Sens. Jeff Flake and Bob Corker). One remaining critic, Sen. Mitt Romney, mostly pushes back by issuing stern but ineffectual tweets. And Sen. Ben Sasse, who used to lambaste the president, has mostly gone silent.

No modern president, besides George W. Bush immediately after the 9/11 attacks, has enjoyed such popularity with Republican voters.

UPDATE: Via Sahil Kapur of Bloomberg and Dallas News, these are the Republicans that have joined Sen. Toomey in denouncing President Trump for his comments toward the four Democratic congresswomen: Rep. Mike Turner, Rep. Will Hurd, Rep. Pete Olson, Rep. Chip Roy, Sen. Tim Scott, Sen. Susan Collins.

And via Alison King of NBC10 Boston, comes this weak tea from Mitt Romney:

“I certainly feel a number of these new members of Congress have views that are not consistent with my experience and not consistent with building a strong America.”

“At the same time, I recognize that the Pres has a unique and noble calling to unite all Americans regardless of our creeds or race or place of our national origin and I think in that case, the Pres fell far short.”

I’ll continue to update the post with any further responses from GOP members as I see them published. If you see some that I’ve missed, please let us know in the comments.

  1. Lol. It’s disconcerting that this even crossed my mind: Because we are in the middle of the crazy season that is Trump, some ardent loyalists might even be rationalizing that yesterday and today’s awful comments by Trump are just part of a super smart strategery he thought of as a way to weed out those in Congress who are disloyal to him…

  2. When will the Radical Left Congresswomen apologize to our Country, the people of Israel and even to the Office of the President, for the foul language they have used, and the terrible things they have said. So many people are angry at them & their horrible & disgusting actions!

    He really is big on projecting his flaws and misdeeds onto others.

    He says something that’s condemned so he calls on other people to apologize.

  3. President Trump has once again forced the hand of the GOP’s sitting members of Congress.

    He’s trying to force the hand of the sitting Democratic members of Congress. Either side with the Squad, or condemn them.

    Sammy Finkelman (dec35d)

  4. I think all the members of the Squad are against, or unfair to, Israel, but hiw have they made Israel feel abandoned by the United States government? Not even by the Congress, not even by the Democratic Party, but by the United States? That’s what Trump is trying to sell, in a bid to force.the Demcrats to isolate them, or otherwise isolate themselves.

    Sammy Finkelman (dec35d)

  5. I think this is another one of those Rorschach test now…

    I still think these tweets is a tactical error of epic proportion, if for nothing else, it opens the barn door for criticism.

    However, Ann Althouse has a more nuanced take:
    https://althouse.blogspot.com/2019/07/lets-look-at-trumps-now-infamous.html

    Let’s look at Trump’s now-infamous question, “Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”
    It is a question, isn’t it? There’s no question mark. That makes it feel more like an imperative. It reminds me of the saying I remember from the Vietnam Era, “America, love it or leave it.”

    Here’s the entire statement — a tripartite tweet (1, 2, 3):

    So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly……..and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how…. ….it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!

    That’s from 22 hours ago. He got a lot of pushback — including Power Line’s “A Blunder of Epic Proportions” — but he didn’t walk it back. He’s Donald Trump; he doubled down. From 11 hours ago — a 2-part tweet (1, 2):

    So sad to see the Democrats sticking up for people who speak so badly of our Country and who, in addition, hate Israel with a true and unbridled passion. Whenever confronted, they call their adversaries, including Nancy Pelosi, “RACIST.” Their disgusting language….. ….and the many terrible things they say about the United States must not be allowed to go unchallenged. If the Democrat Party wants to continue to condone such disgraceful behavior, then we look even more forward to seeing you at the ballot box in 2020!

    1. Who is he talking about? He doesn’t name names, so it’s an invitation for others to do the defining. I see many people talking about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and expressing outrage that Trump would speak of her as an immigrant when she was born in the United States. But he didn’t name her. His words exclude her. She’s really got a hold on people’s mind!

    2. What, exactly, is supposed to be racist here? Clearly, these tweets cause some readers to feel that racism is being expressed, but it’s hard to find it in these words. I see “RACIST” but that’s in the context of ostensibly sticking up for Nancy Pelosi. Some Democrats are calling her racist, and that shows how unfairly quick they are to see racism. Defending Pelosi, he implicitly defends himself.

    3. Is it xenophobia? He’s not saying get out and stay out. He’s saying don’t criticize the United States if you immigrated from a worse country. Go back to that place, fix it, and “The come back and show us… how it is done.” He’s welcoming the immigrant back, after these steps are taken. Of course, it’s unrealistic to expect someone to return to a place they left and become involved in changing that place, but it’s a figure of speech. He seems to be saying that those who were not born here, who chose to move here, have a special obligation to express love for America, that they should tone down their criticism of America.

    4. If telling these Congresswomen to tone it down is wrong, Nancy Pelosi was wrong too. (See “Tensions Between Pelosi and Progressive Democrats of ‘the Squad’ Burst Into Flame” (NYT).) So, again, Trump lines himself up with Pelosi. How do you defend Pelosi without defending Trump? In this view, it’s a clever (and cruel) rhetorical move by Trump.

    5. Here’s Ernest Tubb in 1965:
    https://youtu.be/9JPEz6umM5s

    I don’t know if it’s fair to chaulk this up as Trump being a racists or even a bigot.

    I think this is all about nationalism… not only that, but an excessive jingoistic(sp?) nationalisms.

  6. Althouse – as usual – has a very interesting take. Much less knee-jerk reaction.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  7. Trump has no regrets about his comments:

    Trump expressed no regrets at a White House event to celebrate American-made products when asked by reporters if he was concerned by widespread criticism that his tweets about the lawmakers were racist.

    “It doesn’t concern me because many people agree with me,” Trump said. “And I’ll I’m saying — they want to leave, they can leave.”

    “These are people that hate our country,” Trump said. “They hate our country. They hate it, I think, with a passion.”

    Dana (bb0678)

  8. Now Trump called them Communists… (and conceded they are American citizens)

    https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1150766494697107456

    Donald J. Trump‏
    @realDonaldTrump ·

    “We all know that AOC and this crowd are a bunch of Communists, they hate Israel, they hate our own Country, they’re calling the guards along our Border (the Border Patrol Agents) Concentration Camp Guards, they accuse people who support Israel as doing it for the Benjamin’s,….

    6:58 AM – 15 Jul 2019

    The following tweets are:

    ….they are Anti-Semitic, they are Anti-America, we don’t need to know anything about them personally, talk about their policies. I think they are American citizens who are duly elected that are running on an agenda that is disgusting, that the American people will reject……

    ….What does it mean for America to have free Healthcare for Illegal Immigrants, no criminalization of coming into our Country – See how that works for controlling Immigration! They talk about Israel like they’re a bunch of thugs, not victims of the entire region. They wanted…

    …..to impeach President Trump on DAY ONE. Make them the face of the future of the Democrat Party, you will destroy the Democrat Party. Their policies will destroy our Country!” @LindseyGrahamSC Need I say more?

    Sammy Finkelman (102c75)

  9. “It doesn’t concern me because many people agree with me.”

    There, distilled in one sentence, is Trump’s political philosophy:

    Whatever makes me popular, I’ll say and do. There are no other relevant considerations.

    Dave (1bb933)

  10. I see many people talking about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and expressing outrage that Trump would speak of her as an immigrant when she was born in the United States. But he didn’t name her. His words exclude her. She’s really got a hold on people’s mind!

    and then:

    We all know that AOC and this crowd are a bunch of Communists…

    Althouse barely had time to start gaslighting before Agent Orange cut her off at the knees…

    Dave (1bb933)

  11. Col. Haiku,

    I just read Althouse’s take.

    First, it’s not about the Squad:

    Who is he talking about? He doesn’t name names, so it’s an invitation for others to do the defining. I see many people talking about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and expressing outrage that Trump would speak of her as an immigrant when she was born in the United States. But he didn’t name her. His words exclude her. She’s really got a hold on people’s mind!

    Then it is about the Squad:

    If telling these Congresswomen to tone it down is wrong, Nancy Pelosi was wrong too. (See “Tensions Between Pelosi and Progressive Democrats of ‘the Squad’ Burst Into Flame” (NYT).)

    I feel like she’s doing embarrassing contortions on his behalf.

    Dana (bb0678)

  12. I’m not sure she’s a big Trump fan, Dana. More often than not, she seems to play it down the middle.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  13. I could be wrong, but that’s how I’ve read Althouse as well…

    whembly (51f28e)

  14. > “These are people that hate our country,” Trump said. “They hate our country. They hate it, I think, with a passion.”

    This is what conservatives have been saying about liberals for the entirety of my adult life. Yeah, political figures have usually refrained from saying it, but their *supporters* haven’t. It’s not surprising on some level that a lot of people are thrilled to have a President openly saying things they’ve always believed.

  15. Is she the one who claimed some sort of “cruel neutrality” during Obama’s first election?? Anyway, do you see my point about her posing conflicting statements?

    Dana (bb0678)

  16. I am surprised no one here appears to understand the obvious: Trump is defining and pushing the Democrats to a place they mustn’t/do not want to go. They are now left supporting known anti-semites that harbor no nice feelings for America. There was a time when all good patriots said this. Even Conservative Inc. has fallen. 23. Love that Trump. Hopefully, all the weak-kneed “This will win me some points with the New York Times” Republicans will speak up and Condemn Trump’s words and support Nancy Pelosi. Have we heard from Mittens yet? I suppose after scolding and attacking Trump 20 times in the MSM since Jan 2017, he might have lost his enthusiasm.

  24. Patricia,

    Pelosi sent her letter to members today, neatly tying it in with the immigration mess and ICE raids. It’s standard Pelosi-like. We’ll have to see if it rallies her troops into a unified front.

  25. Have we heard from Mittens yet?

    See update to post.

  26. Dang, I start typing and before I’m done, Dana provides an update on Mittens. Yes, that’s not the usual Grandstanding moralism we expect from Romney. No doubt, the charges of antisemitism against “the squad” have cooled Mittens desire to defend them from Trump.

  29. Trump is defining and pushing the Democrats to a place they mustn’t/do not want to go

    Actually, he’s trying to give them a choice of two alternatives, neither of which they want to do: To freeze them out, or not to freeze them out.

    Trump, or whoever is whispering in his ear, knows that the Democratic leadership doesn’t want to freeze them out and that’s pretty high priority. It’s not like they came out against gay marriage or abortion, which would lead to shunning. (Trump isn’t going there either – he confines himself to subjects on which the Democrats are not willing either to agree or to disagree with what he says.

    Or rather, show by tehir actions or inactions that they disagree, but are not willing to stand up for it. Here, for instance, just why are these four are still members in good standing of the Democratic caucus.

    If only it was possible to say “I don’t agree with the things they say and I still think Trump’s comments were Racist and dumb.”

    Some of it may be the moral equivalent of racism (although Trump is backing off) but none of it is racist – remember PAtterico;s rule of your opponent recignizing your description of his positioon. No one will recognize that description.

    And they are not so much dumb, as dumbed down. They’re bad both in logic and in fact.

    Sammy Finkelman (102c75)

  30. It’s about time someone, anyone put this into clear focus. I read it very simply as “get your America hating asses out of here if you don’t like it!” nothing racist. nothing other than voicing what is on the minds of clear thinking Americans. At least Trump has the balls to call these cretins out, political correctness and the hate from the left be damned. Major kudos!!

    joetote (ca8fe2)

  31. No doubt, the charges of antisemitism against “the squad” have cooled Mittens desire to defend them from Trump.

    (in before nk…)

    Nah, it’s the matriarchy.

    Dave (1bb933)

  32. Allahpundit has a amusing take, as usual (emphasis added):

    One surreal aspect of Trump telling malcontents to leave the country if they’re so unhappy here is that there may have been no right-leaning celebrity/aspiring politician in the United States who spoke as harshly about America during the Obama years as Trump himself. “This country is a hellhole. We are going down fast,” he said (on Megyn Kelly’s show!) a month before launching his presidential bid in 2015. It’s not unusual to hear that from populist outsiders on either side politically; 80 percent of the appeal of nationalism is the idea that invaders of various sorts have ruined the homeland economically and culturally and need to be neutralized or removed — “go back to your home countries” — to restore it to greatness. If everyone who thinks America sucks because it’s not living up to its promise had to live abroad, Trump would have spent the duration of the Obama presidency tweeting from Scotland.

    (Also more on the upcoming House censure vote at the link.)

    I read it very simply as “get your America hating asses out of here if you don’t like it!”

    If only Trump had practiced what he preaches!

    You never complained during the Obama administration – right?

    Dave (1bb933)

  33. Trump doesn’t know how to behave with grace like Mittens. He actually believes in something.

    Of course, the people Mitt felt he should be graceful to cruelly mocked him in 2012–“Russia isn’t a foe!” “Its the 21st century!” And he let them.

    He slunk away to the deep carpeted, air-conditioned peace and quiet on K street, where the GOP inner-circle sipped martinis, compared Ascots, and complimented him on his grace and style.

    Mitt was even gracious when Candy Crowley stopped eating long enough to correct him in a debate for the Presidency. (“Let’s not make a scene!”)

    Inviting those who detest America to leave, was once celebrated among the voters the GOP needs as “Love it or Leave It!” It was a strong sentiment. Proud of the USA. Unembarrassed by patriotism. Disdainful of socialists, Eurotrash-sociologists dependent on US money, useless philosophes, tenured professors of Lenin Studies at XYZ University, and their ilk.

    “Love it or leave it” was lustily disdainful of those who fashionably agonize now, from the safety of peace, about using the A bomb to help end WWII. And of country club GOP types (“”Where is the polo ground?”), that are timid in their patriotism.

    Media celebrates Rapinoe; Brett Stephens wonders if immigrants aren’t better than the citizens we have; democrats know migrants are better. But the mitten-like republicans feel bad that Trump said those who dislike America should leave, then come back to tell us what they’ve done in the sinkholes they came from. Not me.

  43. It was Lindsey Graham who called them a bunch of Communists etc – trying to switch the line of attack apparently. Trump apaprently sent four tweets this morning doing nothing except quoting Lindsey Graham.

    That would explain the digression:

    ‘we don’t need to know anything about them personally, talk about their policies. I think they are American citizens who are duly elected that are running on an agenda that is disgusting, that the American people will reject.’

    And the use of the third person here:

    That’s all Senator Lindsey Graham.

    It’s not a re-tweet and Trump doesn’t make it clear where he’s taking it from. It’s what Lindsey graham said on Fox and Friends.

    https://www.politico.com/f/?id=0000016b-f67d-dfc2-a9ff-feff2fd80001

    In part:

    …This weekend, the President went beyond his own low standards using disgraceful language about Members of Congress. As I wrote on Twitter yesterday, I reject the President’s xenophobic comments meant to divide our nation. Rather than attack Members of Congress, he should work with us for humane immigration policy that reflects American values. This morning, thePresident doubled down on his attacks on our four colleagues suggesting they apologize to him. Let me be clear, our Caucus will continue to forcefully respond to these disgusting attacks.

    The House cannot allow the President’s characterization of immigrants to our country to stand. Our Republican colleagues must join us in condemning the President’s xenophobic tweets. Please join us in supporting a forthcoming resolution sponsored by Congressman Tom Malinowski, who was born abroad, and Congressman Jamie Raskin, along with other Democratic Members born abroad referencing President Ronald Reagan’s last speech as President in which he said, “Thanks to each wave of new arrivals to this land of opportunity, we’re a nation forever young, forever bursting with energy and new ideas, and always on the cutting edge, always leading the world to the next frontier… If we ever closed the door to new Americans, our leadership in the world would soon be lost.

    ”Unfortunately, this morning, the Trump Administration announced they will seek to undermine our nation’s asylum laws. This cruel and anti-immigrant Administration is overreaching and stacking the deck against asylum seekers by limiting their rights to due process under our laws. This is simply not who we are as a country. Instead, we should be working in a bipartisan way for comprehensive immigration reform to protect our values as we protect our borders…

  50. Charles c. W. Cooke has an article at national review that all should read: On Gratitude and Immigration (https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/on-gratitude-and-immigration/)

    Excerpts:

    The United States saved Ilhan Omar from a warzone, let her stay, accepted her as a citizen, and then elected her to Congress. If one can’t be grateful for that, what can one be grateful for?

    Should Omar “temper her critiques of American politics and culture”? That depends. Legally, Omar should enjoy every Constitutional protection available. And, as a matter of course, she should feel able to take part in the political process on the same terms as everyone else. But, culturally, it is absolutely reasonable for Omar’s critics to look at her behavior and say, “really, that’s your view of us?” It’s absolutely reasonable for Omar’s fellow Americans to dislike her and to shun her as a result. It is absolutely reasonable for them to consider her an ingrate — or to believe that she is “a toxic presence in American politics.” And it is absolutely reasonable for them to wonder aloud how a person who hails from a dysfunctional, dangerous place built atop dysfunctional, dangerous institutions can exhibit the temerity — the sheer gall — to talk about America in the way that she does. There is a big difference between saying “I oppose current federal tax policy” or “I want more spending on colleges” or “the president is an ass,” and saying that America needs complete rethinking.

    *emphasis mine

    Now, I believe Trump made a stupid and unnecessary own goal when the left were demolishing their own. Yes, this will hang off his elbow through the election season. But, “Socialist Sisters of Mediocrity” will continue with their big mouth screeds and that will dull the impact of Trumps tweet foolishness.

    Betty Lane (97c12d)

  51. More from Romney:

    Q: Do you think Pres Trump’s tweets were racist?

    ROMNEY:
    “Um, you know, a lot of people have been using the word and my view is that what was said and what was tweeted was destructive, was demeaning, was disunifying, and frankly it was very wrong.”

    Dana (bb0678)

  52. @ joetote, who wrote in pertinent part (#30):

    It’s about time someone, anyone put this into clear focus. I read it very simply as “get your America hating asses out of here if you don’t like it!” nothing racist. nothing other than voicing what is on the minds of clear thinking Americans. At least Trump has the balls to call these cretins out, political correctness and the hate from the left be damned.

    Most humans, male or female, would dispute that clear thinking comes from the testicles. But I think you have at least diagnosed the source of Trump’s thinking, and, I presume, confessed your own.

And there’d be no good outcome for Dems from that vote. Not really, if you consider that more than 2/3 of Democratic voters are for impeachment, and the percentage has been increasing. The candidates will support whatever supporters want:

    Sixty-seven percent of self-identified Democratic respondents said lawmakers should begin impeachment proceedings, the first step toward removing a president from office, according to the poll released Wednesday, an increase from the 59 percent of Democrats who favored impeachment in an April survey.

    Trump risked his fortune? When?

    I see you’re referencing that classic American poetry, the last line of the Declaration of Independence. And I notice you left off the bit about “sacred honor.” Good on you…since Trump has no honor, sacred or otherwise, it would have been a bridge too far. I’m glad you see that.

    Demosthenes (7fae81)

  96. Paul Montagu,

    I agree. I said this upthread about Althouse’s post:

    First, per Althouse, it’s not about the Squad:

    Who is he talking about? He doesn’t name names, so it’s an invitation for others to do the defining. I see many people talking about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and expressing outrage that Trump would speak of her as an immigrant when she was born in the United States. But he didn’t name her. His words exclude her. She’s really got a hold on people’s mind!
    Then, per Althouse, it is about the Squad:

    If telling these Congresswomen to tone it down is wrong, Nancy Pelosi was wrong too. (See “Tensions Between Pelosi and Progressive Democrats of ‘the Squad’ Burst Into Flame” (NYT).)
    I feel like she’s doing embarrassing contortions on his behalf.

    RESOLUTION

    Condemning President Trump’s racist comments directed at Members of Congress.

    Whereas the Founders conceived America as a haven of refuge for people fleeing from religious and political persecution, and Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and James Madison all emphasized that the Nation gained as it attracted new people in search of freedom and livelihood for their families;

    Whereas the Declaration of Independence defined America as a covenant based on equality, the unalienable Rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and government by the consent of the people;

    Whereas Benjamin Franklin said at the Constitutional convention, “When foreigners after looking about for some other Country in which they can obtain more happiness, give a preference to ours, it is a proof of attachment which ought to excite our confidence and affection”;

    Whereas President Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists”;

    Whereas immigration of people from all over the Earth has defined every stage of American history and propelled our social, economic, political, scientific, cultural, artistic, and technological progress as a people, and all Americans, except for the descendants of Native people and enslaved African-Americans, are immigrants or descendants of immigrants;

    Whereas the commitment to immigration and asylum has been not a partisan cause but a powerful national value that has infused the work of many Presidents;

    Whereas American patriotism is defined not by race or ethnicity but by devotion to the Constitutional ideals of equality, liberty, inclusion, and democracy and by service to our communities and struggle for the common good;

    Whereas President John F. Kennedy, whose family came to the United States from Ireland, stated in his 1958 book “A Nation of Immigrants” that “The contribution of immigrants can be seen in every aspect of our national life. We see it in religion, in politics, in business, in the arts, in education, even in athletics and entertainment. There is no part of our nation that has not been touched by our immigrant background. Everywhere immigrants have enriched and strengthened the fabric of American life.”;

    Whereas President Ronald Reagan in his last speech as President conveyed “An observation about a country which I love”;

    Whereas as President Reagan observed, the torch of Lady Liberty symbolizes our freedom and represents our heritage, the compact with our parents, our grandparents, and our ancestors, and it is the Statue of Liberty and its values that give us our great and special place in the world;

    Whereas other countries may seek to compete with us, but in one vital area, as “a beacon of freedom and opportunity that draws the people of the world, no country on Earth comes close”;

    Whereas it is the great life force of “each generation of new Americans that guarantees that America’s triumph shall continue unsurpassed” through the 21st century and beyond and is part of the “magical, intoxicating power of America”;

    Whereas this is “one of the most important sources of America’s greatness: we lead the world because, unique among nations, we draw our people — our strength — from every country and every corner of the world, and by doing so we continuously renew and enrich our nation”;

    Whereas “thanks to each wave of new arrivals to this land of opportunity, we’re a nation forever young, forever bursting with energy and new ideas, and always on the cutting edge”, always leading the world to the next frontier;

    Whereas this openness is vital to our future as a Nation, and “if we ever closed the door to new Americans, our leadership in the world would soon be lost”; and

    Whereas President Trump’s racist comments have legitimized fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color: Now, therefore, be it resolved, That the House of Representatives —

    (1) believes that immigrants and their descendants have made America stronger, and that those who take the oath of citizenship are every bit as American as those whose families have lived in the United States for many generations;

    (2) is committed to keeping America open to those lawfully seeking refuge and asylum from violence and oppression, and those who are willing to work hard to live the American Dream, no matter their race, ethnicity, faith, or country of origin; and

    (3) condemns President Donald Trump’s racist comments that have legitimized and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color by saying that our fellow Americans who are immigrants, and those who may look to the President like immigrants, should “go back” to other countries, by referring to immigrants and asylum seekers as “invaders,” and by saying that Members of Congress who are immigrants (or those of our colleagues who are wrongly assumed to be immigrants) do not belong in Congress or in the United States of America.
