BuzzFeed Is Probably Not Entirely Wrong About Trump, You Know
I have been at the forefront of warning people not to take anything Jason Leopold says at face value — especially when he is relying on anonymous law enforcement sources. However, my best guess is that there is something to what BuzzFeed is saying about Trump having been involved in discussing Michael Cohen’s false Congressional testimony with him in advance. One reason I think that? Rudy Giuliani is all but admitting it. Here’s the whole ten-minute trainwreck of a clip:
Much of this is Clintonian parsing of what the word “deal” means — it depends on what the meaning of “deal” is. But remarkably, Giuliani does not deny that Trump talked to Cohen about the testimony in advance. He says he doesn’t know one way or another. Then Giuliani hints that maybe he (Giuliani) is actually lying about that, and actually does know that Trump had the conversation, but can’t acknowledge it because it’s attorney-client privilege. Then Giuliana ultimately comes out with this gem: “And so what if he talked to him about it?” Giulianai’s position appears to be: sure, Trump talked to Cohen about his testimony, and believes that what Cohen was going to testify to was the truth.
Here’s the critical 90 seconds, if ten minutes is too much for you:
TAPPER: But you just acknowledged — but you just acknowledged that it’s possible that President Trump talked to Michael Cohen about his testimony.
GIULIANI: Which would be perfectly normal, which the president believed was true.
TAPPER: So it’s possible that that happened, that President Trump talked to Michael Cohen about his testimony?
GIULIANI: I don’t know if it happened or didn’t happen. And it might be attorney-client-privileged if it happened, where I can’t acknowledge it. But I have no knowledge that he spoke to him. But I’m telling you, I wasn’t there then.
TAPPER: So…
GIULIANI: It’s not significant, because the version he gave to the…

TAPPER: Well, Michael Cohen is — but he’s convicted of — I mean, one of the things he pled — pleaded guilty to, I believe, is lying to Congress about the Trump Tower deal.
GIULIANI: Well, which time? Which time, Jake?
TAPPER: Well, I’m talking — well, he…
GIULIANI: You can pick your time.
TAPPER: Right, but about the Trump Tower deal, about the Trump Tower deal.
GIULIANI: He under oath — under oath — but he’s pleading guilty to get a reduced sentence, which means he’s saying what the prosecutor wants him to say. If Corsi…
TAPPER: But you just acknowledged that President Trump might have talked to him about his testimony.
GIULIANI: And so what if he talked to him about it?
TAPPER: Well, is it not possible that Michael Cohen had that conversation…
GIULIANI: If it’s the truth.
TAPPER: I’m just asking you for what happened or what didn’t happen.
GIULIANI: It’s not possible. Not possible.
(CROSSTALK)
TAPPER: Michael Cohen left the conversation thinking, well, this is what the boss wants me to say; the boss wants me to say…
GIULIANI: Not possible.
(CROSSTALK)
GIULIANI: The guy driving this testimony was Michael Cohen. In other words, you and I are in a deal together. You are the guy running it. I’m the guy sitting that is back there doing 50 other things. When it comes time to remember what happens, I go to you and you tell me what happened. I don’t tell you what happened.
TAPPER: Well, let me ask you…
GIULIANI: So, Michael Cohen was telling people what happened.
I don’t know if the president was briefed by him or wasn’t. He certainly was briefed by his lawyers, all attorney-client privilege.
TAPPER: Right.
GIULIANI: But I can tell you this. Michael Cohen’s lawyers believed him at the time.

So ultimately, this probably isn’t going to come down to whether Trump and Cohen talked about his testimony. He almost certainly did. Trump is just going to say that he believed what Cohen said. And when documentary evidence comes out to show Trump was aware of facts inconsistent with Cohen’s testimony — and I’ll betcha Mueller has such evidence — Trump is going to say he didn’t remember any of that. And his superfans will believe him.
So BuzzFeed overstepped by saying they have proof that Trump told Cohen to lie. What’s much more likely is that Trump and Cohen agreed Cohen would testify to x; there’s evidence to show Trump knew the truth was not x, and Trump is going to shrug it off as a case of “who can remember every deal they have in the works with the Kremlin?” and his superfans will buy it.
So, although nobody ever knows anything for sure, that’s my best guess as to what happened and how this is all going to play out. We’ll know soon enough whether I’m right or wrong.

In the case of the 60 Minutes TANG documents, they involved events decades in the past, with key participants deceased and unable to confirm or deny. Apart from the technical carelessness of the forgery, one might have hoped the truth would never emerge. Also, if it had affected the election taking place a couple months later, it wouldn’t have really mattered if eventually falsified. It only had to be credible for 8-10 weeks.
In this case, future events will establish conclusively whether the claims are true or not, and nothing of consequence will occur before that happens.
Should the story prove substantially false, by far the most likely explanation is confirmation bias and unprofessionalism, as opposed to wholesale, intentional fraud.

urbanleftbehind (b6a7f6) — 1/21/2019 @ 3:55 pmJason leopold aside (tho he is very very good at FOIA requests in present day)- the other reporter on this scoop has a pulitzer, and perhaps more importantly they’ve both together broken several Trump Tower moscow stories MONTHS ahead of when mueller issued indictments covering same material. That is one reason editor (and non leopold author, for his name atm) have been so confident in trusting these sources.
Ontop of this, what they reported is entirely consistent with information in Mueller’s guilty plea from cohen. Which said, the cohen lied to benefit and at the direction of individual one, and that he had repeated interactions with white house and trump organization about his testimony. The indictment doesn’t go further to characterize the specifics of any of these directions or interactions; namely which individuals are involved and what type of interactions occurred (iow, phone/meetings vs emails/texts/chats-or-other-papertrail-leaving-stuff).
All mueller did was say that the article’s information did not come from his office, and that the stuff the sources were describing did not come from SCO. Which seems true from reading the article, but also from what we know (mueller got cohen via SDNY, they have all evidence against cohen used in his various pleas). If you read all the interactions closely, it basically looks like peter carr guy is trying to simply repeat what they’ve already told us. And the statement was only to pacify the white house that it didn’t come from SCO (which the article doesn’t say either, if you read it closely. it just says mueller is aware of the evidence, which would also make sense).
While it’s obviously possible that this is all some huge error, at this point it looks more similiar to the circumstance from all the presidents men, where they wrote a story saying what a witness would testify to. And after the testimony the guy’s attorney denied that was included. Which when they followed up, turned out to be true- the witness would have testified to facts reported but he wasn’t asked about them.
That is my fear at this point, that while mueller is very, very good… at his core he’s more about protecting the FBI’s procedures than he is about protecting the country from a president who can’t uphold and faithfully execute anything, much less the consitution (which he obviously knows next to nothing about). So the press keeps building him up to be anything, but really he was just trying to please his boss. Which doesn’t bode well for him investigating or informing us on Trump-related activities with respect to Russia. I wonder if that is the corrupt compromise that allowed RR to keep it going this long… they used the DOJ guidance to say, well the president can’t be indicted by our own rules so lets not investigate that too closely. Hopefully the public will find out everything his people do, and that he was always there and publicly presidenting his obvious weaknesses with russia… so the public will be smart enough to figure it out.
The blowback appears to be more about needing a savior (mueller) and playing to ratings (instant reactions) than keeping it simple and teaching people how the news business works. The news isn’t as f-d as so many people seem to think, but critical reading skills and an understanding of how to build a mosaic from a lot of puzzle pieces… it’s not something that fits nicely into one tweet, but it’s how world works. I fear wwc and many of the working class has little to no interest in any of this tho, turning everything into american idol is more fun even if makes them worse, at least they feel like they understand it easier.

I had a friend – a USC grad and co-worker – who worked in our company’s Pasadena Lab. A black conservative, he unfortunately passed around 10 years ago due to diabetes. Over the years I knew him, he often told me how difficult it was to be a conservative in his community. Normally a very funny man, there was no humor in his voice when he described his treatment owing to his principles. I would imagine things have only gotten worse since then.

It seems that at some point Trump’s lawyers told Mueller that Trump did not remember the dates of any conversation with Cohen about the Trump Tower in Moscow and therefore when was the last one.
Cohen himself at first said he stopped negotiating in January, 2016 and laetr that it was in July 2016. Apparently the last contact about this with anyone outside the Trump organization was in July, 2016.
Trump can say it went on until the day he won but that doesn’t mean anything. It just means he never dismissed it from his mind (at least, as something that might happen if he lost.)

But Putin almost certainly never had any intention of letting Trump operate a hotel or whatever in the center of Moscow or it would have hapepned before (Why? Well, after all, for one thing, that would let Trump know about bugs) But Trump didn’t realize how unlikely and impossible this was.
Putin was dangling this Trump Tower in Moscow in front of Trump (not clear how interested Trump was) like a carrot in front of a donkey or a mechanical rabbit in front of a greyhound dog.
There is an obvious conflict of interest here, and we see that a conflict of interest can happen without anything actually happening – just the hope of it.
Whcih was misplaced.

Are we supposed to believe that Trump, or some intermediary, told Michael Cohen to lie, but Michael Cohen idn’t tell that to the Special counsel’s office after he began co-operating, but he *did* tell that to some other law enforcement people not working for the special counsel’s office or toi some other law enforcement or to reporters from Buzzfeed??
It seems to me very likely that It seems likely that his Clinton connected lawyer and/or other
people did tell that, or confirm that, to Buzzfeed. After all, Lanny Davis had to retract something where Michael Cohen supposedly knew something damaging to Donald Trump once before:

There are is some clues this is a Democratic Party linked hoax. Some Democrats were very fast – too fast – to rush out with this, like they knew it wouldn’t stand up. And some time ago Senator Amy Klobuchar asked a question like she knew this was coming up. She’s also a person who asked Christine Blasey Ford is psychiatrists notes were good evidence – while probably knowing that they did NOT back up her story.
