Quintessential Trump Gaslighting
Who says Trump can’t be entertaining reading prepared remarks? I’ll start the clip in the right place, but you’ll have to stop it yourself.
As part of a larger national effort to bridge our divides and bring people together the media also has a responsibility to set a civil tone and to stop the endless hostility and constant negative and oftentimes false attacks and stories. Have to do it. Have to do it. They have got to stop. Bring people together.
It’s the funniest thing I’ve heard since I heard about Melania Trump making a crusade of opposing bullying.

Ding.
Patterico (115b1f) — 10/24/2018 @ 7:37 pmwhat an optimist mr. trump the president is and that is why i love him to expect the #fake news media to set a civil tone and to stop the endless hostility and constant negative and oftentimes false attacks and stories
nk (dbc370) — 10/24/2018 @ 7:43 pmthe CNN Jake Tapper fake news with their weird little hoax-bombs have been nothing but obnoxious all day
no wonder everybody hates them
happyfeet (28a91b) — 10/24/2018 @ 7:44 pmHaahhaaahhhh…snart…haahhaahhhahhha. That was the funniest thing I’ve heard all day. That’s totally what P was saying, the media, those rascals.
Colonel Klink (Ret) (638a3d) — 10/24/2018 @ 7:49 pmnk parodies happy well.
Patterico (115b1f) — 10/24/2018 @ 7:50 pmPoliticians setting an example for journalists — when did this start?
Munroe (b04614) — 10/24/2018 @ 7:57 pmTragic irony is much more enjoyable when the Bard does it.
Ed from SFV (6d42fa) — 10/24/2018 @ 8:03 pmSome folks may need to just go in for a checkup.
Colonel Klink (Ret) (aa838b) — 10/24/2018 @ 8:11 pm#5 True, but there is no reference to fecal material, nor a creepy comment about Romney.
Yet.
Simon Jester (a6712e) — 10/24/2018 @ 8:12 pmNo its zany mad cap humor, but he happens to be right exhibit 23 presidential assassination fan fiction
Narciso (d1f714) — 10/24/2018 @ 8:33 pmI never will get the antipathy for Romney.
Colonel Haiku (2601c0) — 10/24/2018 @ 8:34 pmI’ve voted for every nominee back to dole, McCain still gives that sick feeling like when you drink mango Gatorade??? Romney is working on earning that level of revulsion
Narciso (d1f714) — 10/24/2018 @ 8:40 pmIt’s fine not to like a politician. Accusing them of being a child molester is weird and evil. And a sign of what is wrong in our society.
Simon Jester (a6712e) — 10/24/2018 @ 8:43 pmDisagree all you want with his politics – he’s disappointed me in that area – but he is by all reports a decent, God-fearing and honorable man.
Colonel Haiku (2601c0) — 10/24/2018 @ 8:44 pm@ 11 Colonel Haiku My enmity for Romney is that he is a gutless politician. He is surely a decent and quite capable man.
But, when it matters most as a pol, he wilts.
It is one thing to be let down by someone who manifestly does not have ability. However, those who are and have been gifted deserve scorn when they fail themselves, and us.
Ed from SFV (6d42fa) — 10/24/2018 @ 8:49 pmThank you, Colonel. That’s exactly where I am.
Simon Jester (a6712e) — 10/24/2018 @ 8:49 pmSo the media constantly calling trump a racist authoritarian and comparing him to Hitler while saying he’d an authoritarian is not contributing to incivility and hostility?
Patterico just admit you’d slurp off Bernie Sanders at this point
Hi (72bfde) — 10/24/2018 @ 8:54 pmClassy.
Dave (9664fc) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:08 pmSounds like you have scorn for Romney along the lines of what I had for that quitter Mitch Daniels, Ed.
Colonel Haiku (2601c0) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:10 pmBut wait Ivanka’s clothing line was going to be exempted right, well something has to replace kemal atarurks vault.
Narciso (d1f714) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:13 pmFen, is that you?
Colonel Klink (Ret) (db126f) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:13 pmThe sky is falling
mg (9e54f8) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:14 pmBernie woulda won, just like Howard Dean if you ask certain people.
urbanleftbehind (eed4d5) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:17 pmEd, Colonel, don’t let “Hi”‘s illustration of my point distract you.
We seem to live in a world where a person is not simply a bad choice from our perspective, but has to be a terrible and awful person. One does NOT lead to the other. There are lots of wonderful people each of you know, people you deeply care for, who would be awful as a leader. Right?
Do you call those people nasty names? Do you accuse them of being child molesters? Do you repeatedly try to claim that they are awful people, giving them childish nicknames and making up things?
No, you don’t. You don’t spend energy on that. You simply say, “Hey, that person can be great at a backyard BBQ, but a terrible leader,” and then you move on to supporting who you think would be a good leader.
You don’t focus on a person you don’t care for, and repeatedly bring that person up in threads in an insulting an inaccurate way.
But…it seems that the approach I just outlines is how everyone wants to do politics.
I think it solves little, and in fact encourages the “other side” to amp things up even more.
Just my opinion. But our friend “Hi” is a good illustration of the problem. “Hi” had to personally insult Patterico, and in a way that clearly isn’t true.
Food for thought.
Simon Jester (a6712e) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:19 pmI believe happyfeet started accusing Romney of child-molestation because Romney tweeted (in regard to Roy Moore):
The full quote is
footsies therefore believes Romney has waived presumption of innocence for himself, in regard to, for instance, child molestation.
I like and respect Romney. I think he could have made his point here more effectively with a better choice of words.
Of course if you believe Romney was wrong, the last thing you should do is follow his example, as happyfeet insists he is doing.
Dave (9664fc) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:19 pmPatt calls trump an authoritarian misogynist a lot.
Civil oh so civil
Hi (72bfde) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:24 pmBless your heart!
Dave (9664fc) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:25 pmWhat’s not true about what I said? Turn into msnbc for a day, he’ll look at the opinion columns in the Washington post. It’s a non stop “trump is bringing facism and racism to America” parade. What trump said is correct unless you are a left wing loon.
Hi (72bfde) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:26 pmAnd this is P’s living room. His house, his rules. You have no free speech rights here, he’s only asking to be somewhat respectful, but you have stepped straight into giant a-hole territory from jump.

Hi (72bfde) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:27 pmDo you guys need quotes?
Hi (72bfde) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:32 pmSo it is you Fen, nice to see you back, 3rd name in a day.
Colonel Klink (Ret) (db126f) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:33 pmLike a dog coming back to his vomit, and that’s all his comments are, bless his heart.
nk (dbc370) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:34 pmYou are welcome to take issue with and point out inaccuracies in anything Patrick or anyone else here writes. If you accuse Patrick of saying something, or doing something, you should be prepared to back up your accusation with evidence (for instance, I think you will search in vain for any actual sympathy toward the policies or candidacy of Bernie Sanders). He gets p*ssed off when people lie about him on his own blog.
Personal attacks on commenters, posters (Dana and JVW) or the host, are never tolerated, no matter who makes them and who they are aimed at.
Dave (9664fc) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:35 pm“These degenerates are the reason politicians are scared to say anything about Trump. The laughing hyenas at the rally are not the people I still respect to this day: people who reluctantly voted for a man they believed to be flawed, but still better than Hillary. No, the moral reprobates yukking it up at Trump’s description of inexcusable violence are the people who actively applaud the worst behavior in our public life — just because they find it entertaining, and because its utter lack of morality doesn’t trouble them a bit.“
This was from this week ffs. Yeah civil words here.
Hi (72bfde) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:35 pmSo the times put together a writing submission about the end of the grishenko madness, the most talented was Joseph finder since he’s written about spies corporate espionage blackmail then there’s Scott throw I was so enthused about meeting him at the Miami book fair but the book he promoted that year was lack luster, one of the lesser kindle county tales. The last zoe sharp went straight into presidential asdazniation porn
Narciso (d1f714) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:41 pmSee, that’s the thing. Comments like the ones by Fen/Hi/Whatever aren’t meant to do anything. It’s just signaling that Fen/Hi/Whatever is somehow better than Patterico. Which is amusing, since from FHW’s point of view, FHW is acting in a way that FHW doesn’t think is fair or right!
Just Keyboard Kowboy stuff. The goal is to get Patterico to ban FHW again, and again, and again.
A waste of energy. It’s certainly not about politics.
Simon Jester (a6712e) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:42 pmHarsh, and fair, criticism of people who cheered a violent assault on a reporter.
He did not call for anyone to be bombed, shot, beaten up, deprived of their civil rights, etc.
Tough criticism of politicians and other people in the news is expected and even encouraged.
Personal attacks on people posting or commenting here is not.
Dave (9664fc) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:43 pmAssassination porn, now that’s civil isn’t it, William Randolph Hearst write less inflammatory things and he was accused of inciting cgolz against mckinley.
Narciso (d1f714) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:44 pmHarsh maybe, but it’s not personal to anyone on the site, and specifically not your host, and pretty on point.
If you had an actual point about violence against reporters or anyone else, and the promotion of an act that the person who did it; admitted it was a crime, pleaded guilty to the crime, paid a fine, and $50k to a press freedom group. But that’s not what you did, then escalated, then were banned, and have now created 3 usernames in one day to get around the ban.
Plus, the excessive whining is just unpleasant.
Colonel Klink (Ret) (db126f) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:49 pmIt’s “harsh” only if it’s against a specific person here, yet you can disparage thousands like that and it’s ok?
Tf kind of logic is that?
Hi (72bfde) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:57 pmBtw I’m not this other person you are mentioning.
Hi (72bfde) — 10/24/2018 @ 9:57 pmYes it was a joke, now what Jon tester did to admiral Jackson’s reputation was not a joke, then again tester served with Sanders who let veterans die in hallways waiting for their va care because he’s a filthy communist, Sanders I don’t know what kind of road kill armadillo I would call tester, wait I just did.

That’s basically what you and him do to Trump and people who support him constantly tho. It’s personal attacks, but I guess it’s onlu wrong and bad behavior if people do it back to you.
Hi (72bfde) — 10/24/2018 @ 10:12 pmFresh mangos and vanilla ice cream, oh so good.
mg (9e54f8) — 10/24/2018 @ 10:48 pmHi,
Patterico’s commenting policy to be adhered to if you wish to continue to comment here:
Dana (023079) — 10/24/2018 @ 11:19 pmmangoes is a good omega 3 source
happyfeet (28a91b) — 10/25/2018 @ 12:53 amHe’s looking very ‘Sinatra’ tonight, too. Are we not entertained?!
DCSCA (797bc0) — 10/25/2018 @ 2:38 amwhat Jon tester did to admiral Jackson’s reputation was not a joke
a typically-sleazy US Army officer named Jennifer Pena is the one what ordered the code red on Admiral Jackson
happyfeet (28a91b) — 10/25/2018 @ 2:38 amThe bolded statement is true independent of who says it. Why is this gaslighting?
Didn’t we just have a post and comment thread about how one side, the right, had to acknowledge a true statement, that political violence should be condemned, independent of who was calling for it.
frosty48 (dd1f9a) — 10/25/2018 @ 5:49 amYes but tester leaked it, now he works with filthy communist Sanders who published rape fantasies back when he wanted to be amateur al goldstein
Narciso (d1f714) — 10/25/2018 @ 6:00 am“The media called this “activism.” It denounced Republicans for warning of “angry mobs.” And now the very same media has suddenly decided that threatening and assaulting people whose politics you disagree with is wrong. As long as the political figures being assaulted are Democrats.
But it doesn’t work that way. Democrats and their media allies have sanctioned violence against Republicans. They’ve defended harassment and even assaults as activism. They have embraced and celebrated hate groups. The mob culture they have brought forth is fundamentally changing the rules of American politics. The alleged bombs should open a dialogue about the degree to which violence has become the currency of our politics. But instead the media will offer up the same tired talking points that ignore the violence of its side, while pretending that the culture of political violence in the last two years began yesterday.
It did not. Once political terror is unleashed, it can’t be controlled or compartmentalized. Leftists, who have written a bloody history of political terror from Europe to South America, from the Middle East and across Asia, and right back to America, ought to know that better than anyone else. The Left has made it its mission to destroy America. This is what destroying a country looks like.”

mg (a05430) — 10/25/2018 @ 6:48 amTrump is punishment for everyone who gave Romney sh*t about “binders full of women” and putting dogs on cars. Unfortunately the rest of us have suffer along with them.
JRH (f51cae) — 10/25/2018 @ 10:09 am#61: One of the weirder lines of attack on the “binders full of women” comment was that Romney ought to have known enough women he could hire merely on personal acquaintance, but he didn’t, and so he had to subject women to the degrading practice of collecting their resumes — and giving opportunity to women who were not personal acquaintances!
Radegunda (dcc663) — 10/25/2018 @ 10:16 amBreaking: Gang-rape accuser Swetnick and Creepy P*rn Laywer have been referred for investigation by the Senate Judiciary Committee
To quote Flounder in Animal House: “Oh boy, is this GREAT!”
Dave (9664fc) — 10/25/2018 @ 10:24 amWashington Times has more on the criminal referral of Avenatti and Swetnick
Dave (9664fc) — 10/25/2018 @ 10:27 amThe full referral letter (29 pages long…)
Dave (9664fc) — 10/25/2018 @ 10:32 am?
what exactly do they think the sleazy Jeff Sessions DOJ or the corrupt and risible Chris Wray FBI are gonna do here
happyfeet (28a91b) — 10/25/2018 @ 10:39 amHaving read the referral, it appears all they have against Swetnick is her own self-contradictions of her sworn statement, and a long history of credibility issues including false accusations of sexual misconduct.
They don’t really have anything at all on Avenatti, but ask that he be investigated for possible conspiracy with Swetnick.
It looks to my untrained eye like a warning shot more than a serious bid to bring either of them to prosecution, but we can still hope…
Dave (9664fc) — 10/25/2018 @ 11:11 amTo my eye, it looks like they’ve got Swetnick wrapped up in a perjury and false statements rap but probably not enough on Avenatti to get him for suborning perjury.
To respond to the meat of Patterico’s post – both the media, Trump and the Left are raging hypocrites on civility and have been for years. The media and the left allow each other to get away with their hypocrisy because they are shtupping each other. Until they change their behavior, why are we obligated to disarm and allow them to substantially influence the narrative? Some of Trump’s comments are way out of line, the bleeding out of everywhere and his idiotic criticism of the judge overseeing the Trump University lawsuit come to mind. I’d like to see him act with a little more restraint, but I don’t think that will happen as long as the media hyperventilates over every single comment he makes.
