Radical Left: Trust Us, We Are the Most Insane!

Any time I say that the right has its crazies too, unhinged leftists crawl out of the woodwork acting like mobs — on the streets and on Twitter — as if to say: “No, we’re worse. Don’t try to take our title away!” Here’s Antifa protestors in Portland harassing an elderly white man trying to drive on the street:

More here. That’s your street mob. Now for the Twitter mob. Astronaut Scott Kelly tweeted this:

Uh-oh, Scott. That’s very problematic. What, you didn’t know Churchill was an awful racist?

The BBC intones, regarding the guy who rallied their country to a seemingly improbable victory:

But Churchill is also known for quotes like “I do not admit that a wrong has been done to these people by the fact that a stronger race, a higher-grade race, a more worldly wise race to put it that way, has come in and taken their place”, in reference to indigenous populations of North America and Australia.

Kelly’s Twitter followers also linked Churchill to a famine in Bengal, India, that killed at least three million people in 1943.

Kelly has apologized for calling the great leader a great leader.

Whew. Thank goodness. That was close.

  1. The deeply sad part is that the crazies there (and here) are a tiny minority. They know that they can gibber like lunatics, and even push people around, without any kind of consequences. This is because most people don’t want to rise up and put a stop to it.

  4. This is like the shaming of using Jefferson and Washington quotes because they were slaveholders, despite them being one of the wisest and most enlightened men of their times. It’s a classic case of draping 21st century culture over prevailing 18th and 20th century values.

  5. I agree, Paul. And I have helped some students learn that “cultural relativism” cuts both ways. It’s wrong to judge a prior culture by the standards we have now…when we are discussing that culture and the people raised within it.

    My favorite bit. A student I knew taking bioethics was writing a paper about the history of abortion. She had made a feminist hero of Margaret Sanger, because her professor had preached it so. So very carefully, I asked her to do a quotation search that took her here:

    “…Birth control is not contraception indiscriminately and thoughtlessly practiced. It means the release and cultivation of the better racial elements in our society, and the gradual suppression, elimination and eventual extirpation of defective stocks— those human weeds which threaten the blooming of the finest flowers of American civilization….”

    And that was the mildest of what she found.

    The student was well and truly shocked. I asked her if it was right to judge Sanger’s other ideas by the standards we currently hold on that topic? Reflexively, she said no.

    Then I waited for the penny to drop. Her eyes got very, very wide.

  19. Yeah, it’s rough when historical figures who did some really great things also did some really horrible things. But, if you strip out the culture war context where every left/right interaction is a HUGE DEAL is there really a that much wrong with this?

    Scott quotes Churchill, who did great things. To me it reads as a sarcastic appeal to authority. Someone else pointed out that Churchill did some nasty stuff also. By they way, I have no idea who they are. They’ve got less than 100 people following their tweet so they’re not all that influential on twitter. Being quoted on this blog may be the most influence they’ve ever had. They seem to be from Myanmar. I don’t know (and am too lazy to look up) if that was an area of the world Churchill did something horrible. But it’s reasonable that they might be a little more sensitive to the downsides of British Colonialism than I am.

    Scott closes by saying he didn’t mean to be offensive and that he’ll go learn about that aspect of Churchill’s past. He than restates his point plainly.

    Patterico, where is the harm in the twitter responses particularly for this conversation? I fully acknowledge that some get much much worse but I don’t see it here. I skimmed the tweets. Most were stupid but it didn’t seem like people were screaming for blood. It wasn’t polite or nuanced discourse but…it’s twitter.

  24. O/T but a fond family memory; Churchill’s widow, Clementine, lived out her remaining years very quietly ‘next door’ to us in the adjoining building of flats at 7 Princes Gate in London. She was elderly and a very private person but occasionally we’d catch a glimpse of her outdoors in the closed off flower gardens in the ‘backyard’ – usually w/a friend or nursing aide. One afternoon- for a homework assignment– my younger brother literally walked over to the building after school and made an effort to interview her for his grade school paper but was very, very politely informed she no longer did ‘interviews.’

  32. Its also interesting to me to see what the crazy left considers fighting words.
    Like illegal immigrant. Go onto a campus and set up a table with that as a topic for discussion.
    You stand a good chance of being attacked even though the discussion should be about people who broke the law when they entered the country and are actively breaking the law by staying here, further breaking the law by working here and maybe using forged documents to obtain that work.

    The left has an argument with the laws, which is their right, but the description of an immigrant actively breaking laws drives them batshit loony. They sputter, spit and scream and then tear down the signage.

    That is why I worry more about the left. They are normalizing narrow mindedness and nonsensical rage. You can’t debate on the facts because their feelings are hurt by facts they don’t like
