Kevin Williamson Responds

Filed under: General — Dana @ 10:13 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Responding to the New York Times’ decision to hire Sarah Jeong, in spite of her ugly tweets, and his name being invoked in the ensuing debate, Kevin Williamson had this to say:

I assume that the editors of the Times knew exactly who and what Jeong was when they hired her. If not, then it isn’t Jeong who needs to be fired — it’s the negligent people who hired her.

If, on the other hand, the Times is more or less satisfied with Jeong, then it should resist the social-media mob campaign to have her dismissed. It is up to institutions to hold the line against mass hysteria and the mob mentality of social media. I don’t know much of anything about James Gunn, the director fired from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise for making a bunch of ghastly jokes, but I do know that Marvel Studios can and should say: “We’ll hire who we want.” Marvel and the New York Times have the resources and the standing to stand up to this kind of social-media scalp collecting: All they need is the guts. I hope the Times has enough. Berkeley didn’t. ABC didn’t. Google didn’t. A few book publishers I can think of haven’t.

I’ve heard some people on the right say, “If Kevin Williamson has to get fired by the Atlantic, then Sarah Jeong has to get fired by the New York Times.” The Times can hire and fire whomever it likes — but not in my name. I’m sure that many of the people invoking my experience are well-meaning friends, but I’ll thank them to leave me out of this.

  5. Great article by David French at National Review.

[T]o indulge at all the notion that injustice, even systematic injustice, can excuse or legitimize hatred against a class or group of Americans is to open Pandora’s Box. I’ve seen it argued across the breadth of the Web that anti-white sentiment is a legitimate and understandable response to the actions of white people and “white” power structures. But think about this argument. Veterans of our Middle Eastern wars have seen jihadist horrors on a scale that most Americans can’t comprehend. Is it a legitimate response for a veteran to go on a Twitter screed about “canceling” Arabs or calling them “groveling goblins”? Should a white victim of a black criminal draw conclusions about black people more generally? Even if he can point to disproportionate levels of violent crime?

Of course not. A healthy society urges people to reject unhealthy temptations to generalize, and instead urges that we treat our fellow citizens with a degree of grace and to judge them based on their individual actions. Any categorical hatred or disgust stands directly against this virtue. So, yes, anti-white racism is real, and Americans can and should reject it while still keeping in mind matters of gravity and proportion.

Are we really so far gone that we can’t condemn taking “joy” in being “cruel” to another person on the basis of their race? It’s time to understand a fundamental truth: The denigration of human beings — yes, including white human beings — works its own harm.

Should a white victim of a black criminal draw conclusions about black people more generally? Even if he can point to disproportionate levels of violent crime?

Maybe not, and especially not to carry it doown to the individual level, but then they shouldn’t do this with regaad to illegal aliens also, and Donald Trump is actively promoting that kind of thinking

    https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/president-donald-j-trump-stands-victims-illegal-alien-crime

•The Trump Administration created the Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) Office in order to support the victims and families affected by illegal alien crime.

He has done this without getting any kind of condemenation from National Review. He’s getting it from Democrats, but it is kind of muted.

And the thing is, it’s not even true.

    https://www.npr.org/2018/06/22/622540331/fact-check-trump-illegal-immigration-and-crime

While any death is tragic, a February 2018 study by the Cato Institute using 2015 crime statistics from Texas found immigrants in the country illegally were 25 percent less likely to be convicted of homicide than native-born Americans. ( Legal immigrants were 87 percent less likely.)

    Continuing:

  18. Sammy, it’s not necessary to “denigrate” anyone or treat them with hatred or disgust to enforce the law. It is normal to feel revulsion toward people guilty of the worst crimes (murder, rape, child abuse, etc) but part of being a citizen in a free society is keeping your personal impulses in check, to remain within the law.

By the same token, we train our military to respect the basic dignity of enemies they are engaged against and may take captive. Because to do otherwise would make our military less professional, less disciplined and less capable.

Sammy, it’s not necessary to “denigrate” anyone or treat them with hatred or disgust to enforce the law.

Yes it is, because it has very bad adverse consequences to the person against whom the law is being enforced. If it was a parking ticket, maybe not so, but for this kind of thing, yes. Otherwise it violates the golden rule.

And in any case, Donald Trump and others seem to think it neceesary.

It is normal to feel revulsion toward people guilty of the worst crimes (murder, rape, child abuse, etc) but part of being a citizen in a free society is keeping your personal impulses in check, to remain within the law.

    That is mostly true.

By the same token, we train our military to respect the basic dignity of enemies they are engaged against and may take captive. Because to do otherwise would make our military less professional, less disciplined and less capable.

That is a principle of the military.

It is not so true of jail guards.

Dehumanizing other people has the inevitable effect of also dehumanizing those who do it.

I think Martin Luter King said something of the same nature too.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  26. This is why the discussion of “principles” goes nowhere with Trump’s supporters: they don’t know the meaning of the word.

Here’s an example of a stated principle: “It is up to institutions to hold the line against mass hysteria and the mob mentality of social media.”

Notice: no reference to political preference!

  31. He’s actually saying the opposite of that. This is obvious to anyone willing to do the analysis.

    Leviticus (efada1) — 8/3/2018 @ 9:09 am

Of course you’d claim that. But it denies reality. Your leftists continue to ramp up their aggression and try and destroy anyone that doesn’t fall in line.

Williamson said he doesn’t agree with it, but won’t do the same. Nor will he do anything to stop it.

Reagan understood. MAD is the only way to ensure the most rabid do not use the weapons available to them. Till the left is punished the same way they punish others, they will never learn.

The racist hired by the Times proves as much.

    NJRob (b00189)

  32. I left this comment at the jury. I think it’s a good starting point for any discussion concerning Trump and the media and other subjects by extension:

Of course Trump needs to keep them agitated and angry. It’s how he got elected. Trump is nothing if not a master manipulator. The same goes for the media. They need Trump supporters equally as agitated and angry in order to do all their virtue signalling, point the finger and lay blame, as well as cry wounded foul (while ignoring their own fat fingers pointing back at their guilty selves).
This is how they justify their righteous indignation. Both Trump and the media are the same. And this is why they have such a sick, symbiotic relationship.

In other words, Kevin Williamson continues and takes pride in his career the Most Useless Party For Any Useful Political Action. Much like his magazine!

“So what’s the right thing here? Chase this woman from the internet based on tweets that were offered up without context?”

‘WITHOUT CONTEXT’ is the ‘WHATABOUTISM’ that liberals immediately run to like a security blanket when their hand is caught in the casual racism jar.

The context they gave (unconvincingly) was that she was STICKING IT TO THE PRIVILEGED HILLBILLIES, of which the Harvard alumnus and beneficiary of affirmative action for a technical ‘minority’ (despite that minority having greater educational, financial and social attainment than most of the majority population, and part of the population very well known for ethnic networking on the side.)

What’s actually true: The New York Times knew and approved at the time, the explanation is a fig leaf for a board of people who socially benefit from a wide platform for casual anti-white racism. As do most of their readers. They’ve all found each other.

It doesn’t wash. She gets fired for cause or The Failing NYT gets both boycotted and treated as a pariah source by all other newspapers.

She also absolutely deserves all the future anti-Chinese racism that will no doubt be directed at her, at least at the level of her previous tweets.

More Kevin being dumb and shameful:

“it isn’t Jeong who needs to be fired — it’s the negligent people who hired her.

If, on the other hand, the Times is more or less satisfied with Jeong, then it should resist the social-media mob campaign to have her dismissed. It is up to institutions to hold the line against mass hysteria and the mob mentality of social media.”

The New York Times, which bot-boosts columns from the execrable Charles Blow and Thomas Friedman, is one of the PRIMARY INSTIGATORS AND PRIMARY LEADERS of the mob mentality! Kevin Williamson is the proverbial battered wife (well, mistress, really) who sticks up for a blatantly abusive husband because she wants to feel powerful through him and have him destroy her shared enemies!

Kevin is committing the sin of omission, The NYT committing the sin of commission, they’re both deplorable, they should both be shunned by anyone who claims to be a man of principle and consistency.

  57. “In the uproar over Sarah Jeong’s hiring by the New York Times, the focus on her history of hateful rhetoric against white people overlooked her many other expressions of hatred — toward males, Christians and police officers, among others. While her new employers have apparently accepted Ms. Jeong’s disingenuous excuse that she was “engaged in what I thought of at the time as counter-trolling… intended as satire,” this cannot explain away her demonstrable habit of deliberately insulting entire groups of people. It is not true, as she claimed, that she merely “mimicked the language of my harassers.”

Consider, for example, Ms. Jeong’s oft-expressed contempt for Christians, including her own parents. She “grew up in a conservative evangelical Christian bubble,” but “became an annoying atheist” as a teenager, when she was “trapped in a fundamentalist Christian school.” After attending the University of California-Berkeley and graduating from Harvard Law, Ms. Jeong pronounced herself a member of the “educated left wing elite.” She says she has now “mostly cut myself off from the conservative evangelical community,” and condemns Christians who “indoctrinate children” with “reality-denying belief systems.” Ms. Jeong’s spiteful denunciation of her parents’ faith was not “counter-trolling,” nor was it “intended as satire.” These anti-Christian remarks appear to express her sincere beliefs, no different from her many similar expressions of contempt for other groups.

Police? “Cops f—king suck” and “they’re f—king horrible,” according to this Harvard Law alumna, who hates the men and women whose job is to enforce the law. She responded to the 2014 race riot in Ferguson, Missouri, by aiming obscenities at the police and declaring “America is f—king racist.” This rhetoric was not a response to harassment, nor was Ms. Jeong “mimicking” anyone as “satire.” Her anti-police sentiments, like her anti-Christian sentiments, are evidently sincere. These opinions are endorsed by her new employers, who share the same “educated left wing elite” worldview. It’s doubtful the New York Times would hire anyone who wasn’t a cop-hating atheist.

Ms. Jeong has routinely expressed her total contempt for males. In August 2014, she tweeted, “Men are too f–king emotional to be let out in public. Jesus Christ,” and followed that with, “Yo. Men. Just get off Twitter. Every man. All of you. You can’t handle this sh—.” She has repeatedly said “all men are garbage.” ‘

  87. “Some of the worst of us got tenure, naturally. Even though the legacy of Marxism in practice is hundreds of millions of corpses, unimaginable oppression, injustice and horror, Marxism, in theory, remains a preferred mode of mental masturbation for the worst of us.
Global growth of middle-class lifestyles and the free market’s relentless assault on class barriers made the “workers of the world unite” shtick from the early 20th century so patently silly that the worst of us decided to apply Marx to race and sex where it is even more patently stupid, yet seemingly new and clever.

Like the dog that actually caught up to the fire engine, Boomer academics destroyed so much of the institutions they rebelled against that they have nothing left to do but devolve into caricature. If one’s whole life was about resenting parental disapproval of one’s politics and sexual mores, what does one do when they’re gone — or worse they change their minds, “grow,” and agree with you?
The ever-shifting array of leftist tropes, causes du jour, and passions are all driven by the same non serviam based on the fear that some comprehensive traditional moral order will return and swallow up the illusory freedoms we narcissists carved out.

Back in the day when the face of the traditional moral order was that of the innocuous ordinary people who comprised family, friends, and neighbors, it was not really all that threatening. But when you succeed in divorcing your life from all that was once normal, when distance and ignorance create caricature in the place of everyday experience, the fear increases even as the threat from the forces of tradition recedes.
Spectacularly stupid fiction like The Handmaid’s Tale is accepted as accurate metaphor, Jim Acosta’s horror at the deeply alien, non-leftist regions of America is considered sane, and Sarah Jeong’s utterly sophomoric tweets about her weird caricatures of white people is mainstream.

When we Boomers embarked on the solipsistic, selfish, arrogant stylings that characterized our youth, we did lasting damage to nurturing institutions and to the following generations who needed and deserved the values, wisdom, and experience we squandered. Sorry, Sarah, we owe you an apology but you may not have been educated well enough to know why and that’s our fault as well.”

Really sounds like he was complaining about his opponents using Alinskyite tactics, eh? Also probably Sartre, or someone who may have lived around the same time:

“The more I argued with them, the better I came to know their dialectic. First they counted on the stupidity of their adversary, and then, when there was no other way out, they themselves simply played stupid. If all this didn’t help, they pretended not to understand, or, if challenged, they changed the subject in a hurry, quoted platitudes which, if you accepted them, they immediately related to entirely different matters, and then, if again attacked, gave ground and pretended not to know exactly what you were talking about. Whenever you tried to attack one of these apostles, your hand closed on a jelly-like slime which divided up and poured through your fingers, but in the next moment collected again. But if you really struck one of these fellows so telling a blow that, observed by the audience, he couldn’t help but agree, and if you believed that this had taken you at least one step forward, your amazement was great the next day. The Anti-Semite had not the slightest recollection of the day before, he rattled off his same old nonsense as though nothing at all had happened, and, if indignantly challenged, affected amazement; he couldn’t remember a thing, except that he had proved the correctness of his assertions the previous day.

    “Sometimes I stood there thunderstruck.

“I didn’t know what to be more amazed at: the agility of their tongues or their virtuosity at lying.

“Gradually I began to hate them.”

Seems to work the same way. My general feeling is that these drop-in diatribes where you can substitute any erudite author or group you hate as the figure of exclusion as a substitute for argument are probably tools of people with Very Low IQ, Very Unlikeable Personality, and Very Unlikely to Solve Any Problems.

  165. “The numbers are phony. These are all phony numbers. Numbers given to politicians to look good. These are phony numbers.” – Donald Trump

Labor force participation remains near historic lows – even lower than when Donald Trump took office.

Anyway, let’s look at the actual manufacturing numbers, phony as they are (according to Donald Trump).

These graphs are straight from the BLS website, you can make them yourself.

This puts things in perspective and shows what a tiny fraction of the labor force manufacturing jobs represent, and how unimportant even fairly large changes in the manufacturing sector are to the economy as a whole:

    All jobs (w/ manufacturing)

Remember, the graph is measured in thousands; the total number of manufacturing jobs is around 13 million. The 370K jobs you want to crow about are much less than the thickness of the blue line in the above graph…

The trend in manufacturing jobs is easier to see when plotted alone:

    Manufacturing jobs

Note the suppressed zero. Manufacturing jobs have been rising at the same, nearly insignificant, rate since 2010.

Since bottoming out at 11.45M in March 2010, the number has risen to 12.75M in the most recent report – an 11% increase in exactly 100 months, or 0.11% per month on average. Under Trump (so far), it’s 0.17% per month.

Increasing a negligible rate by 50% results in … a negligible rate. And you can see that clearly in the graph. The growth of manufacturing employment is identical to the rate of (the much larger) total private sector employment.

It’s nice that employment is increasing at the same rate as the labor force (in all sectors), but to pretend something significant is happening in manufacturing is delusional.
