Trump: You Need an ID to Buy Groceries

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:28 am

Um no.

“You know if you go out and you want to buy groceries, you need a picture on a card, you need ID.” The guy says.

I believe in voter ID laws. And there are countless areas of life in which you do need an ID to perform simple, basic, everyday tasks. The underlying complaint here is valid.

But why do we have to select a moron to make that argument? Why must this nincompoop choose one of the few situations where you don’t typically need an ID?

This guy contaminates everything he touches and everything he supports.

  1. In fairness, and given that he’s 72, and so it’s been many years since he went out and bought his old groceries, you very much did used to need an ID to buy groceries.

If you were writing a check.

Keep in mind that just 25 years ago, you could not buy groceries with a credit card in most places. It was check or cash only.

  2. Only if your a troglodyte paying with a paper check or at a price-club (Sams Club, Costco) type establishment where you are issued a club ID with a photo. Probably referencing to the first couple of Marla/Tiffany years where he was playing the dutiful dad role.

“There’s the Scott Adams idea that Trump deliberately gets some things wrong. What is that theory exactly? His antagonists will feel compelled to talk about it because they can point out what’s wrong. (Duh, here, it’s so easy.) And then they’ll be forefronting the issue he really wants discussed. (Here, it’s voter ID and the fear of voting by ineligible voters, emotional issues that cause people, some people, to gravitate toward Trump.)”

  11. we make our tranny tatters show ID when they buy groceries at the commissary

The commissary, like most of the services on base, is just for military ID card holders. You must have your ID card with you to buy your items. Sometimes, employees will ask to see your ID at the door and require you sign in adults without an ID as a guest. Other times, they will not. But you will be required to scan it at the checkout on every trip.

All kinds of military IDs are accepted at the commissary — active duty, Guard and Reserve, dependents and retirees. As long as you have your military ID (don’t forget it in the car!), you’re good to go.

  12. You used to – in theory – need an ID when using a credit card to buy groceries. I don’t think this ever happened to me, or if it did maybe once. the first time I used a credit card to buy groceries was in 1998. My fatherr (and mother) used that much earlier, but that was only possible in big stores – and they didn’t use bar codes. I don’t think they used bar codes to check out groceries in New Yrk until after President George HW Bush’s flub in 1992, although the UOC symbols had been on groceries since 1974.

An ID was more often asked for if someone wanted to pay for anything by check. Or cash a check.

Food stamp cards are also IDs.

But why do we have to select a moron to make that argument

    Donald trump is not amoron.

He just plays one on Twitter.

The thing is, Trump knows that even the more general argument is wrong, and when it comes to wrong arguments, or even weak but true ones, he always makes the strongest claim.

You know what comparsison I would make here,.

Worrying about in person voter impersonation is like worrying about getting chesated when getting change when buying groceries and using cash. It just doesn’t happen. Tf a cashier, or asdtore owner, started to do this, he or she would get caught after doing it 10 times and certainly 30 or 60 times, and the same thing is true with anyine trying to organize in person voter impersonation.

  27. You need a card or a phone number code to get the discount and everyone I know uses one compulsively.
People who are only buying 1 stalk of broccoli dutifully swipe their card or punch in their phone number.
The number I use is fake. I forgot which phone number I used when registering and I hit in a typo by mistake that worked. I memorized that number because it is an easy one and have been an ID thief ever sense.

Anyway, the markets here do want a very weakly vetted ID if you want the discount.

So to close up this long winded rant, you do need to produce ID to get the discount, and you do need to show a photo ID to enter a Costco (unless you want to buy only liquor).

This will be an easy gaffe for Sanders to spin him out of…. Costco requires a photo ID and most large grocers require registration in order to get any offered discounts

  28. Trump’s been tweeting a lot this morning aout the Russia investigation.

    He says:

    1. Peter Strzok should have recused himself. He was out to stop his election and needed an insurance policy [Trump doesn’t have it quite right here. The investigation was an insurance policy against his getting elected, and Strzok had no real hope of stopping his election – he just said that to make his mistress less nervous.]

    2. Strzok should not have been allowed to stay in the FBI while under investigation [where’s due process?]

2a. Mueller is going to protect these guys. He’s interested in creating an illusion of objectivity about his investigation.

    2c. Alan Dershowitz… thought not completed. He ran into the 280 character limit. And seems to have left out a few words. (What did Dershowitz say?}

    Maybe this? http://insider.foxnews.com/2018/07/30/paul-manafort-trial-robert-mueller-hoping-he-will-choose-testify-against-trump-rather-die

    3. Sessions should put a stop to this “Rigged Witch Hunt” right now. Mueller is totally conflicted [possibly refers to his friendship with Comey] and his 17 [sic – 13/17] Angry Democrats are a disgrace to the USA.]

    4. Paul Manafort worked for Ronald Reagan and Bob Dole and others and he didn’t work for him for long. Why didn’t the government tell him [Trump] he [Manafort] was under investigation? [Obviously, to put the best light on it, they didn’t trust Trump]

And these old charges have nothing to do with collusion, which is a hoax. [Actually they do have something to do with the possibility Russia counted on Manafort – or was hoping for – something. And again, the question, is, who recommended Manafort and Flynn? And why? I mean one reason may have been given to Trump, but was the real reason, if anyone knows. And Trump was trying to be freidnly to Putin. On whose advice?]

    5. Russian collusion with the Trump campaign is a “TOTAL HOAX” The Democrats paid for the dossier.

[Trump doesn’t say where the information in the dossier came from – if he thinks it was made up, or if he thinks the disinformation came from Russia, which means from Vladimir Putin.

I have explained why I think Russia would tell lies about colluding with Trump even though they wanted to help Trump – they had no idea Christopher Steele was working for the Democrats and thought he was working for people in the UK – either the government or British conservatives – and the disinformation would go no further and would not affect the election, and besides which, they had to give Steele something lest he discover the truth – teh reason for Putin favoring Trump was that it was part of an attempted penetration of the U.S. government – or doubt his sources on things they had told him years before.

Steele didn’t pay anyone in Russia. He thought he ahd cultivated honest sources, who themselves had genuine information that circulated widely in official circles. The Russians felt they had to maintain that perception.]

I’d say “Bah, old tech!” For at least 30 years now, government issued IDs have had bar codes. A police officer or customs agent can scan them and your whole information including your picture comes up on a computer screen. Let’s moveon.org. Tattoo that bar code on everybody’s wrist. It will be good for the environment too!

  60. Nothing wrong with showing ids to prove who you are to vote. However when used to stop american citizens from voting it is wrong. When your answer is tuff get an id if you can and voters are disenfranchised in hundreds of thousands if not millions when you only catch a very few fraudulently voting on election day mostly republican convicted felons or ann coulter. When your motto is better that a million voters can’t vote then one illegal can.( by the way they don’t) millions of dollars were spent in my state to find and prosecute illegal aliens voting. none were found because they come here to work not vote though they did find a woman had vote twice for mitt romney in az another state either utah or nevada. What goes around comes around. What if democrats when they take over and start arresting conservatives who try to vote on alleged crimes they say republicans committed in the past. When you stop a person who is an american citizen from voting you think they won’t support candidates who vow to get revenge on those who stopped them from voting? You say get an id. They say get in the jail cell or re-education camp. Remember alexandra ocasio-cortez is obama in waiting thanks to fox news talking about her on every show.

  87. it’s good to be sequestered in case of zombies

i saw this was available on the amazon but it’s not free

but it’s very intriguing because it has zombies (archetypes of human fail)

There’s an action climax, more or less. But by then, we hardly care, and the fade out doesn’t provide any fresh reason to. Many zombie films have been worse-made than this one — most of them, really — yet whether they aimed for terror, muscular action, comedy, or simply gore, at least they aimed *somewhere*. This relatively “realistic,” first-person solo perspective fails to be fundamentally interesting because, despite its capable star, he’s given no defined character to play. Nor is that blank slate’s humanity underlined or complicated by notable narrative invention, let alone any profound existential dimensions.

    […]

“The Night Eats the World” just feels like several rudderless months stuck in a building with a guy who probably wasn’t all that fascinating before zombies struck, and isn’t any more so now. There isn’t much entertainment or other value in sensing the novelty of the situation wear thin, just as he does.

Trump’s greatest advantage in the GOP primary was that the reasonable conservative vote was split among many candidates.

That was true, but he also had an advantage in states with closed primaries that republicans always lost elections in.

He also had the advantage that the other candidates weren’t able or willling to argue with the substance of what he said. Trump always notices when that is the case. Saying things that are wrong then makes him look honest st least.

The GOP primary would be better with a run-off, despite the immense pricetag.

There was a runoff. It’s called the convention. But candidates drop out if they themselves can’t get amajority of teh delegates.

  89. 30. A couple of hours later on Aug 1 Trump tweeted

    6. Who was treated worse, Alfonse Capone, “Public Enemy Number One,” or Paul Manafort [Trump spells Capone’s name like former Senator Al (Alfonse) D’Amato.] He says that Manafort is now in solitary confinement – although convicted of nothing [The explanation is, Manafort’s bail was revoked because he was contacting people in Ukraine who had hired him, trying to get them to day his duties did not include lobbying in the United States – he’s accused of not registering as a foreign agent, and the prosecutors; requested he be confined to stop him from witness tampering. The near solitary confinement is because of threats. In Capone’s da they maye weren’t s concerned about that.

    7. “We already have a smoking gun about a campaign getting dirt on their opponent, it was Hillary Clinton. How is it OK for Hillary Clinton to proactively seek dirt from the Russians but the Trump campaign met at the Russians request and that is bad?” Marc Thiessen, Washington Post [Trump is, as he does many times, quoting, rather than saying anything on his own. This comparison is very true as far it goes. The Hillary Clinton campaign not only asked for dirt on Donald Trump, they got it . But they asked the Russians under an false pretenses. So what does Trump think of Vladimir Putin for handing over this disinformation?]

  91. New Yorker magazine claims Trump has accelerated his lying:

    https://www.newyorker.com/news/letter-from-trumps-washington/trumps-escalating-war-on-the-truth-is-on-purpose

In June and July, he averaged sixteen false claims a day. On July 5th, the Post found what appears to be Trump’s most untruthful day yet: seventy-six per cent of the ninety-eight factual assertions he made in a campaign-style rally in Great Falls, Montana, were “false, misleading or unsupported by evidence.” Trump’s rallies have become the signature events of his Presidency, and it is there that the President most often plays fast and loose with the facts, in service to his political priorities and to telling his fervent supporters what they want and expect to hear from him. At another rally this week, in Tampa, Trump made thirty-five false and misleading claims, on subjects ranging from trade with China to the size of his tax cut.

  92. The sleazy CNN Jake Tapper fake news trash people like to say President Trump makes false claims cause they’re trying to discredit him.

But President Trump is without question one of the most honest presidents we’ve ever had since we started having presidents. Compare him for example to Barack Obama or Bill Clinton or George Bush see what I mean?
