Man Claims to Be Woman to Get Insurance Discount; Canadian Government Complies

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:53 am

Via Allahpundit on Twitter comes this story that well illustrates the way that people can manipulate a “choose your own gender” society to their advantage:

A Canadian man in his early 20s was unhappy with the high quote he got from his car insurance company, so he decided to do something about it: legally switch his gender from male to female.

The cunning 24-year-old resident of Alberta, Canada, first detailed his insurance stratagem on Reddit back in April, boasting that changing his gender on paper saved him nearly $1,100 a year.

‘I have taken advantage of a loophole,’ the man, whom CBC.ca called David, told the news outlet. ‘I’m a man, 100 per cent. Legally, I’m a woman.’

Presumably, if the company tried to use his actual gender to impose accurate rates on him, that would be discrimination of the worst possible kind.

You gotta love 2018.

  6. How long until we move to the idea that the government can choose which gender you identify with? Imagine the possibilities. Worried about lack of women in STEM fields? Just declare that 50% of STEM workers are women. Bothered by the fact that we have never elected a female President? Just declare that all of the even-numbered Presidents were women (sorry John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, U.S. Grant, Silent Cal Coolidge, FDR, Ike, Landslide Lyndon, and the Gipper). Worried about campus sexual assault statistics? Just declare that half of the perpetrators are women, and half of the victims are men. Catholic, Islamic, and Orthodox clergy are now 50% female, and the alleged pay gap no longer exists, with WNBA players (half of whom are now male) now making as much as NBA players (half of whom are now female)!

  7. Gender is gender. Sanity is what appears to be fluid.

I have a hypothetical I would love to use to shake up the academy. It’s clear if you are male or female, but do not have the equipment that goes with your self-identification, there is some kind of problem. What should an enlightened society do for you, if the technology is perfect. Give you the expensive operation that gives you a substandard version of the equipment you want? Or give you the the far cheaper therapy that matches your identification to the equipment you have?

I think 2018 would demand the expensive operation.

She was refused on the basis that she did not have a gender reassignment certificate, which had not been issued because she chose not to annul her marriage.

MB was told that she would have to wait until she reached the male state pension age of 65 before could collect her pension payments.

Being a corporation, they can’t use human judgement. Because it would be easy to argue his change of gender was insincere, and should be disregarded. And in fact maybe was a species of fraud, like sometimes getting divorced can be.

Of course the differnetial in rates was set at atime when legal gender was fixed (except f=or cases that could be argued were mistakes)

There’s not going to be an epidemic of this.

Just get older. I think insurace premiums will drop when he reaches his 25th birthday.

In the United States what we do is:

    1) Register the car in the name of another driver, maybe someone who almost never drives a car. If the car gets stolen, say you borrowed it for that day.

    2) Register the car in another state or locality with cheaper insurance. Just don’t file any claims.

Not the same work, but sometiems similar work.

Women choose to work for lesser pay because they don’t devote as much effort into their job search, or want convenience.

If a job pays less, more of the applicants will be women.

Job history is also a factor.

Men are far more likely to choose careers that are more dangerous

Men are far more likely to work in higher-paying fields and occupations (by choice).

Men are far more likely to take work in uncomfortable, isolated, and undesirable locations

Men are more likely to take jobs that require work on weekends and evenings

Even within the same career category, men are more likely to pursue high-stress and higher-paid areas of specialization.

This study leads to the unambiguous conclusion that the differences in the compensation of men and women are the result of a multitude of factors and that the raw wage gap should not be used as the basis to justify corrective action. Indeed, there may be nothing to correct. The differences in raw wages may be almost entirely the result of the individual choices being made by both male and female workers.” – US Dept Of Labor – Jan 2009

  51. Mr. Biscuit and his Flower Hour are mostly right.

I looked at this, like, four years ago and when you factor experience and job type, the real discrepancy is that women get around 94% of the pay of men. The real argument is about a 6% discrepancy, and it’s not all about gender discrimination. In general, men are more aggressive about asking for pay raises, because we’re guys. So, in effect, the discrepancy is a rounding error.

No he’s not, and no it’s not. We could certainly debate the causes and the moral significance of the gender pay disparity, but the disparity itself is well documented.
