Trump’s Advice to Theresa May on Brexit

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:21 am

If only she had listened! New York Times:

Prime Minister Theresa May on Sunday revealed the advice President Trump had given her on how to negotiate Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union: Go straight to court.

Mrs. May was asked by the BBC about comments Mr. Trump made both in an interview in the British tabloid The Sun and later at a news conference on Friday at Chequers, the prime minister’s country residence, northwest of London.

“He told me I should sue the E.U.,” Mrs. May said.

Buh-rilliant.

  30. No clown he, President Trump. It was very very generous of him to credit this bungling dumpster-slut with even a shred of intent to preserve some small portion of her trashy little country’s sovereignty.

He’s a masterful diplomat, but I think we can all agree he has much more worthy countries and initiatives on which to focus.

The takeaway here is that it’s time to think about replacing little girl raping Britain with a more significant country on the UN security council, one that better values freedom and human rights.

India certainly comes to mind. They’re on the cusp of having a larger GDP than the once-propserous UK, and they’ve built a powerful consensus against raping young girls.

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  49. Two idiot comments. The first:

“Well, I think we have a lot of foes. I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade. Now, you wouldn’t think of the European Union, but they’re a foe. Russia is foe in certain respects. China is a foe economically, certainly they are a foe. But that doesn’t mean they are bad. It doesn’t mean anything. It means that they are competitive,” Mr. Trump said at his golf club in Turnberry, Scotland.

Trump’s moral equivalence involving these nations is repulsive. The EU and China are more competitors–their being our two largest trading partners–than foes. PutinLand is our 30th largest trading partner and its leader has been consistently hostile to our interests.
    The second:

President Trump said in an interview airing Sunday that he hadn’t thought of pressing Russian President Vladimir Putin on extraditing the dozen Russian officials charged with hacking Democratic emails, instead blaming the Democrats’ “bad defenses” for getting hacked during the 2016 campaign.
“Well, I might,” Trump said when asked during an interview with CBS News about extraditing the indicted intelligence agents. “I hadn’t thought of that. But I certainly, I’ll be asking about it. But again, this was during the Obama administration. They were doing whatever it was during the Obama administration.”

Idiotic because hadn’t even thought about asking Putin to extradite 25 Putineers, and idiotic because, in my Trump’s mind, Putin’s cyber-attack on America is somehow not so egregious because it was under Obama’s watch. Good grief.

well you assumed wrong and on top of being wrong you’re also very disrespectful (on President Trump)

President Trump adviced the prime minister to fight for the freedom of every single one of leggy meggy’s subjects as if they had actual human rights and were deserving of the kinds of liberties we’ve come to take for granted in our country, the United States of America.

That his advise fell on deaf ears is certainly no reflection on the wisdom of it. Theresa May’s just a really incompetent broad who’s in way over her head.

We must build a kind of United States of Europe.

In this way only will hundreds of millions of toilers be able to regain the simple joys and hopes which make life worth living. The process is simple. All that is needed is the resolve of hundreds of millions of men and women to do right instead of wrong, and to gain as their reward blessing instead of cursing.” – Winston Churchill, 9/19/46, Zurich, Switzerland

  118. Trump blames America first, that “our relationship with Russia has NEVER been worse.” Spoken like a true unpatriotic, anti-American left-wing hack. The Russian foreign ministry “liked” Trump’s tweet, and why wouldn’t they. Trump levied no blame against them. It’s as if an unprecedented cyber-attack on the United States of America by Putin’s military–as outlined in last Friday’s 39-page indictment–didn’t happen. It’s as if our Trump-appointed DNI didn’t say last Friday that, on the cyber-warfare front, the “warning lights are blinking red again.”
Yesterday, in yet another case of brainless moral equivalence, Trump couldn’t call the Putin regime a “foe” without calling the EU and China “foes”. Trump also said this:

“Frankly, we have not been getting along very well for the last number of years…I really think the world wants to see us get along.”

Maybe the world does but, to “get along”, it takes two parties acting in good faith, and Putin is not one of those parties. The weirdness to all this is that our two previous presidents tried to improve relations with Putin and they failed miserably, but not for want of trying by Bush and Obama. Bush mistakenly thought he got “a sense of his [Putin’s] soul”, and then Putin took control of parts of Georgia. Obama told Medvedev that “after my election I have more flexibility” to seek a better relationship, and then Putin invaded and annexed the Crimean region of Ukraine.
So far, Trump’s Eurotrip has been one of depth and stature, the depth of my kids’ plastic kiddie pool and the stature of a tattoo parlor. Given that we elected a man whose ego is only exceeded by his vanity, I anticipate that we’re going to find yet another American president outmaneuvered by Putin, and we won’t really know for sure what will have happened in that meeting because Trump won’t even bring an American note-taker into the room.

U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman warned on Sunday that there will not be "much of a relationship left" between the U.S. and Russia if Moscow seeks to meddle in the 2018 midterm elections.

And while we're on the subject of PutinLand, I can't help but recognize the heroism of Pussy Riot, a band of punk-rock chicks who can't play their instruments*. Four years ago in Sochi, they sang a protest song in a public setting ("Putin Will Teach You to Love the Motherland") and were horse-whipped by Cossacks for their efforts (the video here).
Yesterday, they trolled the World Cup.

Russian authorities have charged four members of the punk activist group Pussy Riot for disrupting the World Cup final by running onto the pitch.
They are accused of violating the rules for spectators at sporting events and of wearing police uniforms illegally.
The two offences carry maximum fines of 10,000 roubles (£121; $161) and 1,500 roubles, respectively.
Pussy Riot said it was a protest against human rights abuses in Russia. Stewards hauled the four off the pitch.

I find your position baffling. For months and months the criticism of Mueller was that he had nothing, it was all a fishing expedition, no evidence, no crime, witch-hunt, etc.

As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for!

Then Mueller laid out, in great detail and specificity, clearly backed by a formidable trail of digital evidence, a covert foreign military operation carried out against the United States that – just today! – the President of the United States (and beneficiary of the operation), while standing next to the KGB agent who ordered it, insisted never happened. The KGB agent denied it, you see. Denied it very strongly!

And you think Mueller should have kept the evidence he compiled about the attack quiet?

That would certainly suit Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin (and their sycophants). It’s not clear how it would be in any loyal American’s interests, though.

Putin says we suspect U.S. intelligence officials were involved in channeling $400 million from businessman Browder to Hillary Clinton election campaign

Putin says he agrees with Trump that our militaries are working successfully in Syria. Asked if he had wanted Trump to win 2016 presidential election, Putin says ‘yes, I did’

“He just said it’s not Russia,” Trump said during a news conference following talks between the two leaders. “Let me say this, I don’t see any reason why it would be.”

But I have — I have confidence in both parties. I really believe that this will probably go on for a while, but I don’t think it can go on without finding out what happened to the server. 166. The standard for an indictment is probable cause. Say, maybe, a 25% chance that what is alleged actually happened.

Are 75% of people indicted by the federal government acquitted?

Do you think there’s only a 25% chance the Russians charged are guilty?

What about 9/11? As far as I’m aware, nobody has ever been tried, much less convicted, for direct participation in the 9/11 attacks. The attackers themselves are obviously dead. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s case is pending, but as of now it’s “just an indictment”. “The 20th hijacker,” Moussaoui, was convicted of conspiracy, but not the actual acts (he was in jail on 9/11). Are we therefore unable to conclude that Al Qaeda was responsible?

The standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt to convict an individual is one of the cornerstones of liberty under the rule of law. But when has that standard ever been applied to public policy decision-making?

Contending – on the basis of no evidence whatsoever – that Mueller’s indictments are a wholesale fabrication (“fake” in your words) seems to me about as credible as “Bush-flew-the-plane” Trutherism.

  184. If U.S. intelligence and law enforcement officials were convinced it was Russians who hacked into the servers of the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, why didn’t they demand those servers be turned over to them to determine what the Russians were after?

    So what?

It might have been helpful, but it clearly wasn’t necessary.

I’d imagine the evidence on them had already been overwritten by the time the feds became directly involved. When a computer is infected with malware, and you need to use the computer, you reformat the disk and reinstall the operating system, etc. Everybody understands this, it’s no mystery. The Dems belatedly hired a private firm to try to clean up the intrusion; if they didn’t have money, time and manpower to replace their whole computing infrastructure in the middle of the campaign, they would have done the most straightforward thing and reformatted/re-installed.

I also wouldn’t be so sure that backup tapes weren’t made available. The hardware of the machines was not tampered with. The evidence was not in the machine(s) themselves but in the *data* stored on the disks, and that could have been provided from backup tapes (possibly after removing sensitive proprietary information) without requiring the physical computers.

Further, what was on the machines is likely not even that interesting. For establishing responsibility, the important evidence is where commands were coming in from, and where data was being shipped out to. The network traffic would tell you exactly what rootkit/hacking tools were used.

Another little detail is that I don’t believe the authorities can seize the property of the victim of a crime. If your house was broken into, would you be OK with the police seizing it as evidence?

But this “what about the server” nonsense is a complete red herring, just a traitorous attempt to cover for the Russian attack.

If you believe the DoJ and FBI engaged in a vast conspiracy to fabricate the charges out of thin air, it would have taken no further effort to plant any desired evidence on the server, or to create bogus servers with fabricated evidence. In fact, if they *had* inspected the physical servers, you would no doubt be accusing them of doing just that…

  193. When your house is broken into you can’t expect the authorities to prosecute the perpetrators based solely on the evidence you and your private cleanup team provide to give them, even if the cleanup team is also a contractor often used by the authorities.

If Trump had handled these questions exactly as the critics demand nothing would be different. It wouldn’t have changed Russia’s behavior. Louder condemnation, more sanctions, etc isn’t going to convince the Russians to stop exploiting the asymmetrical advantage they have in taking advantage of our poorly secured information systems. The barn door has been open for years and all the previous administration did is sit idly by and complain. This kerfuffle won’t make it any better.

  194. Liberal Reporter: I’m Really Not Sold Fake Password Reset Emails From Russia Is A Hack…Or An Attack

And that’s the point. It’s sour grapes. Hillary Clinton lost—and the Democratic Party’s dirty laundry was aired for all to see. So, how to pivot? Scream, whine, and act like a crazy person about Russia hacking the election, or something.

Cyber operations are part of the geopolitical landscape. This is not some new era, and the media should stop treating it as such. China hacked the U.S., stealing 20 million records from the Office of Personnel Management in 2015. It caused the U.S. to pull their intelligence assets in China out of fear that they could be compromised. What did Obama do retaliatory wise on that attack? The selective outrage is also getting to be absurd, as if nothing bad happened during the Obama administration, which was one of the worst moments in American foreign policy history, a saga of inaction and dithering caused by paralysis by analysis.

Should we guard against future attempts at interference? Yes, but this is being blown way out of proportion—always has been and always will be because the media hates Trump. This is a tantrum. And this will never be 9/11 or Pearl Harbor. The more the media scream, the fewer people will listen because all the points made to back up this kooky narrative are so off base, you don’t even need to read into it; a phishing email is like the bomb that sunk a battleship or a plane that flew into the towers. C’mon, guys.

slutbama did summary execution on bin laden

no intelligence value in questioning him he said

At least he didn’ty bomb the house. That killed lessposisble and got allsorts of documents (mainly electronic files) of intelligence value, most of which they not onl;y kepty under wraps but didn’t analyze themselves.

It wasn’t that live OBL had no value – iyt was OPbama’srules for inteterrogation not even plea bargaining really.

    Still a red herring.

If you want to follow through with this analogy, in cyberspace the feds apparently have surveillance cameras on every street corner, sufficient to track the thieves continuously en route between their hideout and your home.

It looks to me like the feds were able to reconstruct large swaths of the IP traffic, if not the whole shebang. If so, they can reconstruct the software that was used from the content of the packets that copied it onto the compromised machines.

If Trump had handled these questions exactly as the critics demand nothing would be different. It wouldn’t have changed Russia’s behavior. This seems like a very flawed analysis. I think it is impossible, in principle, to protect sensitive private systems from unlimited-resource attacks by agents of a former superpower (or any other moderately developed nation state, for that matter). The situation is similar, in some ways, to the bad old days of Mutually Assured Destruction. You can harden a small number of government facilities, but you can’t put the whole country into underground bunkers. Deterrence (making the cost of carrying out an attack prohibitive) is what kept the Russians and us from nuking each other, not some impenetrable defense of every possible target.

And this is why Trump’s betrayal of our country is such a disaster. What he told Putin today was: “As long as you intervene on MY side, I’ll be happy to look the other way and pretend nothing happened.”

Putin now knows there will be no consequences. He can do whatever he wants, risk-free. And its even worse, because Trump is incapable of admitting a mistake. In for a penny, in for a pound. The next time the Russians get caught red-handed, Trump (and his cultists) will stonewall for them even harder. Because the only alternative would be to admit he was wrong.

Ad hom again, used I suspect to ignore the underlying facts and talk about something else. But here are the facts.

We found $17,700 donated to Clinton and another $297,000 to the Democratic National Committee.

Putin lied by orders of magnitude.

    Colonel Haiku (5fd258)

  212. DCSCA @209. Fair enough. The question remains:

When confronted I expect Putin will do so with a twinkle in his eyes while thinking, “so what are you gonna do about it?”

Trump played with fire today and got burned. Calling Putin out and telling him to stop it didn’t work when Obama did it. It’s not clear that hearing it again from Trump today would have been any different. Refusing to attack him in public as Trump did clearly didn’t work either so what are we gonna do about it?

Saying dumb stuff today is nobody’s fault but Trump’s however the neverending untouchable Mueller investigation that may or may not be targeting Trump for “colluding” with Russians to harm HRC and the democrats in the ’16 election is harming America’s foreign policy. The spying will continue whether we hear about it or not.
