Trump’s Advice to Theresa May on Brexit

Filed under: Uncategorized — Patterico @ 5:55 am

If only she had listened! New York Times:

Prime Minister Theresa May on Sunday revealed the advice President Trump had given her on how to negotiate Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union: Go straight to court.

Mrs. May was asked by the BBC about comments Mr. Trump made both in an interview in the British tabloid The Sun and later at a news conference on Friday at Chequers, the prime minister’s country residence, northwest of London.

“He told me I should sue the E.U.,” Mrs. May said.

Buh-rilliant.

  1. I guess the UK can sue the EU in the Court of Justice, and suing always has been Trump’s negotiating tactic of choice. He likes to use the courts to wear out the opposition, or threaten to go to court. He would have been a great ambulance chaser.

  2. Apparently Trump thinks NYC is part of Europe. The values are similar.

  4. Do you remember calling Ellie Light as a possible Donald Trump astroturfer? Who knew that name would show up again and again and again?

  5. Jurnolist, rizzotto tray, exactly the same viewpoint sometimes using the same words. In point of fact Europe has many of the same schisms as our red/blue divide, rural vs metropole, in France, the enarques have neutered the political opposition brexit vs remainer (may is the latter) afd csu vs cud/socialists

  6. I don’t understand how Trump can be so blunt with our allies and so deferential with the world’s dictators. It’s easy to conclude he admires dictators and doesn’t admire democracies.

  7. But it is clear that the DOJ (and maybe even the NSA, State, and our diplomats) think the only way to get Trump’s attention is through the media. That tells me Trump doesn’t listen to or maybe even do Daily Briefings anymore.

  8. Kevin D. Williamson answers my concern in comment 6:

He is not engaged in treason or anything like treason. He is engaged in hypocrisy and moral illiteracy. He is a frank admirer of caudillos such as Vladimir Putin, because in his mind ruthlessness, grasping, and amorality are associated with effective leadership. Hence the praise for Kim Jong-un.

This is NYC-style leadership in a nutshell. It is how NYC real estate developers, politicians, and mafia dons operate. Those men and the world’s dictators are Trump’s peers — who he knows and understands in his gut, even if he has never met them.

  9. Make America Great Again! Let’s hand over to Putin for questioning everyone who doesn’t vote for Trump.

  10. A fair number of Trump supporters would like that.

  11. Putin is on CSpan2 right now discussing in Russia the events of the Helsinki Summit. He warned Russians that there is a segment of American society that will sacrifice its own interests to hurt Russian-American relations. He specifically mentioned those who support Israel and oppose Russian goals in Syria and the Golan Heights, which he said he discussed with Trump.

He did not elaborate and shortly after that he said the rest of his discussion would be in a closed door session without the media. I wonder what he and Trump discussed? I haven’t seen anything reported about that.

  12. Haaretz has something:

Russian President Vladimir Putin opened Tuesday’s highly anticipated joint press conference with U.S. President Donald Trump in Helsinki by saying that the U.S. president paid particular attention to Israel during their summit. Trump echoed that Russia and the U.S. will work together to help ensure Israeli security.

“We both spoke with Bibi and they would like to do certain things with Syria having to do with the safety of Israel,” Trump told a joint news conference. “Russia and the United States will work jointly (in this regard).”

Another report said Putin promised to push Iranian proxies away from the Israeli border.
